Jason is so cool man. I was heartbroken when I heard he left the band because a lot of people that were open minded and not just foolishly blaming him for the reason of Metallica changing direction knew that Jason was the one that was trying four times harder than he needed to to represent the metal community. Me and my brother will never forget the first Metallica concert we went to in the 90s and we were headbanging and screaming the lyrics to every song we were hanging over this balcony the entire time and Jason pointed at us and gave us props because he could tell we were with it through every note that was played and when he made eye contact with us that was the coolest moment for two teenage Metallica fans.
No... not only one more time... he needs to return and play together with Rob, who is also amazing performer. I don't say all the shows, because he must have his own business, but a few shows on every tour.... yes... and playing in Argentina always... I will never forget Jason's style... I think I am a fan of MetallicA because of Jason... I never see Cliff in a live show, sorry. I see Jason's and Rob's era... both are amazing.... and they deserve to play together... like in the 30th anniversary (incredible show).... And one more thing... Why not Mustain every once in a while... We love Dave in Argentina also... big fan... You may know the "Aguante..." chorus.
Jason needs to put out a book! His stories are so interesting and a very unique perspective that is far different than the rest of the boys. I think he took it in more and appreciated it more than the other guys somehow.
I love this dude, live he was a TOTAL MONSTER!! No disrespect to Rob but, I just think Jason was a much better fit. I was bummed when he left the band.
@MIND thanks for the music lesson. I said nothing about writing music. When someone is one of four people in a band they CONTRIBUTE in many other ways then writing music. That’s why Id chosen that word. Negative ass fuk. Obviously never been in a band before. BTW. 3 riffs he wrote are bad ass
The way he tells his stories makes you feel like you're right there with him. I miss Jason. Glad they been doing a lot of stuff with him. Hopefully they will do it for load and reload too.
Talking about Moscow '91: I learned that the people who were in charge of the organisation of the show( not only the management, all) were totally unprepared, had to start from scratch with all the sound equipment on the field( they didn't even have the electrical sockets there), had sloppy security. And all because the city had no experience with such huge events. So, they were kinda lucky to make through the show and succeed.
All I can say is thank you Jason, you are such a crucial part of who I am now, and with no exaggeration, probably a part of why I'm still alive now. Although it's not enough, I can only say thank you 😊.
Honestly, I loved Cliff and the music he helped create but Jason is probably my favorite. He was the connection to the fans. He was the soul of Metallica.
I always wondered why cliff stopped writing or Co-writing songs after ride the lighting . Think his last contribution was on master of puppets (the song though). To live is to die somehow doesn't count
One sad thing about Jason is that when he's mentioned, people always come up with the hardest parts and the not-so bright sides of his position. Ok, it was probably tough on some days. But let's not forget the good parts: he was the bass player in Metallica when the rocket took off, he became incredibly rich and famous, he conquered territories 99,999999% of the musicians on the planet wouldn't even dare to dream of and his life gets the “F***ING SUCCESSFUL“ label any day. I tend to believe that he must have enjoyed some pretty happy days as well and I'm glad that this kind of interviews mention it.
I got a chance to meet Jason before they went to Russia. I had just been in the country for a month and was heading back to the US through Copenhagen. Myself and companions were walking around Tivoli, and I thought I recognized James. He was sitting at a bar and Jason was standing outside with a beer. It was surreal. I remember him saying he was delirious...lol We talked with him, and he said they were going to Russia to play, so we give him some rubles. I still have the picture I took with him. Nice guy and very down to earth.
I think Jason has the most vivid memories and anecdotes out of all the band members when it comes to shows from that era. It's simply a joy to listen to. Thank you Jason.
I think James said it best when he referred to this kind of life as "bizarre." You have all these fans worshipping you, but you're also seeing things that can't easily be unseen. But at the same time I don't think there will ever be another band like Metallica, to be able to ascend to that level on a global scale and pump out the energy that they did in the late 80's and early 90's. There was a gap to fill with that style of music, they filled it, and I don't think it could be done twice by someone else.
Part 3 is the best so far! Love how he gives Pantera their props for the Russia show. I was waiting and waiting to hopefully hear some credit due to the CFH! Cool on you Jason. Awesome road stories too.
I love these stories, imo nobody could touch them back then when they were live, you can just tell how much jason loved playing with metallica and most likely still does love them despite their differences.
Total legend he talks about doing the small things during a show to be whole from the ending but every fkn show i ever watched with jason he was giving 1000 % at the start and just as much at the last song what a guy🤘🏻
Jason basically came on stage balls out. I could only dream what it would be like to be on the same stage as him. This video shows the explosive energy he brings. That is how it is done.
Love and miss you Jason :) Im so glad to see you being involved as your bass is a huge part of the sound and the songs above all. Metallica then had four main ingredients and a chef called Mr Bob Rock.. Metallica has come out in different flavours and though few ingredients have changed still they have delivered alot of different flavours and sounds with each album server for our enjoyment. Metallica 4 life. Sure made my life alot more enjoyable and made alot of friends due to this strong sonic force connecting us. Stay safe and healthy everyone. Greetz from Sweden.

You learn so much from it, and get a real window into how things were. Great story teller. Thank you for these interviews!
He still has that crazy and funny way of telling stories! XD Super cool guy, terrific bass player and amazing live performer. His stage presence was only second to James. And that is a HUGE compliment.
no exaggeration about Day on the Green. 10 hrs in the Mosh Pit at that show... IIRC I was 16. I mean Queensryche was a bit of a breather (great set, but not really mosh stuff), then METALLICA. I remember we could barely move on the BART train ride home after. And I pity that poor Taco Bell employee that night, we were so deaf I KNOW we were shouting at them, lol.
Bro. Same. I was 16 as well at that show. And had to avoid the gold chain sellers on Bart on the way back to Concord. Great fucking show. I loved Queensryche that night.
James Hetfield & Lars Ulrich should have supported Jason Newstead with his personal album! It was something different than Metallica! It was his own music, Not Metallicas Music! They should have supported his efforts. Jason supported Metallica. I understand & respect Metallica giving him everything he owns & making him a millionaire & famous! They should have supported him & let him get his music out! The shit that couldn't be in Metallica! Jason's music. I bet they regret that decision too snuff him out creatively! That's why he left.
Many of my friends are from South America and it's funny because back in the nineties in high school, I blasted Metallica and one girl was dressed all in black, could not speak a word of English but yet she started dancing almost Spanish-style to "...And Justice For All".
