Sample and Hold - what is it and what can I do with it?

- What the heck is a sample and hold? What should I use S/H for in my eurorack system? Are there any cool uses for sample and hold modules besides creating random unquantized pitches? What other parameters can I modulate with sample and hold? How do I make an "8-bit+ or "bitcrushed" style sound using modules already in my eurorack modular synth system?
If you are asking yourself any of these questions, you will want to check out this video!
In this video Alex takes a dive into Sample and Hold as a concept, a circuit, and a feature of the Eurorack module from WMD/SSF, the Modbox. From the basic obvious uses to more advanced ideas in synthesis.
Different use cases include random voltage generation for modulation over Pitch, Filter, and other synth parameter, as well as down sampling, LFO control, Quantized voltage generation, pulling out notes from a sequence, and creating interesting soundscapes with panning and moving instruments around the stereo field.

Cool thanks! After watching this comprehensive video demonstration, I'm left with just one question: what's sample and hold?
right!
Easy. It samples and holds.
And what can I do with it?
Nice to see more of you Alex, good stuff!
Awesome dude, like your style! Thanks for this. Sick mod setup btw !
Thank you very much for showing how to use the sample and hold 💯
mad skills being presented here!!! thanks so much
Filtering the s&h is such a cool idea!
Thanks dude!~
Thx for this. I liked when you got around to the Arpitecht at 11:30. :)
Good stuff!
Cool trick with filter resonance !
Thanks!
Cool video have been wondering about s&h. Sounds like Daniel Avery when you first bring in the drums
I love these videos! I hope you do a Mini Slew one
That's an idea, thanks man. I'll put it on the list!
Jelani Yorker Yes minislew please!
nice vid
I have a feeling that this with a wogglebug and an intellijel shifty is gonna just be bosstits madness! Can't wait!
Heck yea!
DOUBLE HARMONIC ACTION!!
I wonder. We use an LFO/clock to take samples of a noise source at regular intervals. The noise source is crucial for providing the randomness/unpredictability of the samples. But what if one used a predictable signal source, like an LFO or VCO, *instead* of noise, and sampled at random aperiodic intervals, such that the samples were never taken from the identical point in the cycle? Obviously, you can't have the samples taken *too* far apart, but they don't necessarily HAVE to be predictable step durations.
S&H is an under rated module for creating cool beats and generative patches.
I sample and hold my beer 😝 How is that for an example?
But yeah, on a serious note, thanks for the video. Just checking out examples of different S&H uses for a speedier alternative to "Happy Accidents". Never had the patience to get into full modular, just using a bunch of semi-modulars. But the same applies.
Nice
That was awesome!!!! My one question is, what was that module you used for high hats? I need to know they wear coming threw so beautifully. Thank you for the tunes.
The Hihiat is a 909 sample being played by the Rossum Assimil8or. I also have a Chimera running in 16th notes in "shaker" mode which beefs it up a bit.
Thanks!
loving that binary society hoodie.
M25 (London Orbital) vibes
feel like I just watched a wizard try to explain how magic works
everything is sold out. Do you want some manufacturers?
Can you NOT use an onboard noise generator? ANY audio input? These sounds are interesting but very un organic,,,Pete used a sample and hold on Wont get fooled again but used a Hammond type organ as a sample source.
Use anything, we use an oscillator around 06:06 as the source to down sample it and get a digital sounding. As far as organic goes... sample and hold is random when using a random source like noise. You can influence it and make ti a bit more controlled by using a more predictable source...
@@WMDevices Could you sample and hold an external audio source like say, a voice recording? I find sample and hold really hard to get my head around. I can't imagine if or how this would work. :/
You look like David gilmour
