Stereo Wavefolding sounds crazy! // Intellijel Bifold Wavefolder Overview

- For a while now i've thought about ways to take a simple waveshapes and create complex waveshapes out of them. One easy way is with a Wavefolder! Thankfully Intellijel sent over their Bifold Dual Channel Wavefolder module for me to check out! Not only can it crossfade between folded and unfolded waveforms but can also be used as a ringmod. And since the Bifold can convert mono to stereo signals quickly with the wavefolder, this is my first time ever trying anything "stereo" in eurorack form. I think i may have been convinced that stereo is pretty awesome..

Thanks for posting this Ricky, it was a great introduction to some of the features! There is a lot more to demonstrate and explore with the Bifold that we can't wait to share. With dynamic sounds sources (like a decaying bass tone) the folds change over time as the amplitude drops. For this reason I personally prefer to feed steady amplitude sound sources to the folder and then apply amplitude modulation post folder. If your sound source is much simpler (like a sine wave) then there will be a much bigger contrast between the folded and unfolded signal. One of my favourite things to do is patch two different waveforms from the same VCO e.g. sine into one folder and saw into the other side and then use the xfader to find a balance between the two sides. I have gotten really warm and fizzy analog lead riff tones this way. The two fold CV attenuators are normalled to +5V so with nothing patched in you can use them to offset the fold amount for each channel. This can help set a default level when the FOLD knob is full CCW. It is also handy when balancing the stereo image if you are using both outputs panned L/R. One of the most interesting things to explore is noise generation patterns. If you patch Out P into In S and the Out S into in P you create a serial feedback patch (feedback through two folders in series) and adjusting folds will vary the amount of texture noise generated at the MIX output. With that patch, adjusting aux feedback or symmetry per channel yields some pretty wild results. With just a simply modulation source like an LFO or cycling envelope patched into the xfade cv or fold amount for a channel you can get really complex cycling patterns. Lot's to explore! Stay tuned for more soon! We are busy packing these up so they should be officially available in the next week or so.
You all prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I was dumb forgot my account password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Bishop Musa Instablaster ;)
@William Madden Thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@William Madden It did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my account!
@Bishop Musa You are welcome :D
Modular stereo is a barely touched goldmine. Crossfading, panning, random modulations on stereo field creates amazing soundscapes.
I definitely Second That Emotion!🎧💫😵😎👍👍
totally agree, do you know anyone who is big on it? would like to learn more!
my quattro figaro from bastl hasnt been explored enough in terms off its stereo fx and panning, etc.
also check out LRMSMSLR from worng electronics :D
@@flame2106 Its an excellent module. After you get it, its indispensible for stereo patches.
I was already 95% sure I was buying one, but now that I better understand the normalization and switches I might be approaching 200% 😆 Thanks for the awesome demo! 🤘
Lovely! I can't wait to have it fold my laundry
Honestly, "it does stuff" approach is much better than knowing how shit works and not making music
7:40 luv the bastl waver for stuff like this. never would have even looked at the bifold without this video. so good.
Wave folding was one of the very first things I did with eurorack. It's STILL refreshing and educational to see Ricky take us through it. It's a great reminder that you don't have to stick to either coast: both together does some of the best stuff.
Man this sounds GREAT
ricky i bought a sample pack last week. you have to plug your stuff more so that if we "want" to support we know where to go. I know you probably don't feel comfortable plugging, but I didn't even know you had sample packs. Just my $0.02..rock on!
Thanks broski! I’m hoping that eventually people stumble across it :) - also I still have a day job so this is all for fun! I appreciate the support homie
I love that you are always prepared and ready to be focused for the video, like at 1:56 - 2:06 **slow clap**
Another head-nodding outro. That's what Saturdays are all about! 😁
Holy shit, all your modular vids make me want to sell all my stuff and go all in on modules. That stereo field is brutal 🤘
It’s so cool to see how you just instinctively know what to do with your modular. Shows you know it pretty well.
Disting mk4 has an algorithm that's similar to this module. It's a cross-fader(/pan) which starts to cause wavefolding at max levels. For those who have a Disting and considering getting the Bi-fold
I wasn’t sold on the Surface, but it sounds great in a west coast voice setup. Bifold sounds smooth.
Ricky: this is my first time trying stereo stuff in my modular. I think I’m addicted.
Also Ricky, not very long afterward: I love this optical spring reverb pedal, I just wish it was stereo
Hey Man, i want to say somthing, i am a verry noob at modular. i watched the last week tonnes of videos about this crazy funny nerdy shit. but i just returned to your videos: i wondering my self why: Here the answer:
You understand music and the technical side. in both ways but You dont use the technic for itself, you use it for music. More than this: you feel the music!. I love it!
Very nice! An alternative module that's already some time on the market would be Chopping Kinky by Befaco. It doesn't have ring modulation, but I also use it to fold a mono wave into stereo (side channels), and it still provides a mix channel that I use as the mid side.
I love wave folding on the lower sounds as well.
Wow that was incredible
Sounds amazing. I will be looking to get one in time.
I've been eyeing the Bastl Waver for a while. Now I'm rethinking it.
Could be worth trying this, Surface, Squawk Dirty and Milky Way one after the other to make some stereo basses- I fee like you could fit all that in there!
It was cool before but once you dropped the drums in, I couldn’t keep from moving. This is so cool, dude.
Yeah finally that mysterious Bifold module!! Sounds awesome, love the stereo sounds. Off topic, I think we're due for another Compact Creations soon :-)
You had my 5 year old self at 2:57 "You have Out P(ee) and Out (as)S"
Wait is this a NEW intellijel module?! Hell ya! 🥳🤩🥳🤩🥳 thanks for the demo!
Asymmetrical distortion can do insaaaaane stuff for stereo. FL Studio recently added a distortion that allows for it and I've been abusing the hell out of it lol.
Thanks for all your hard work and doing amazing videos. I have bought a lot of great gear based on your tutorials. Stay safe!
You need an oscilloscope, it can visualize allot of what is going on and it will also be easier for you to explain certain stuff for us audience, e.g. when you tried to explain the inverted waveform, on a scope it is visualized so everyone gets what you mean. It will also make it easier for you to understand what is going on. When ever you are wondering what is going on, like the p and s out put. Smack a scope on both outputs and see the difference for yourself. :) Other than that, I really like your vids. I love trying to recreate some of it in VCV-rack as i do not own a real synth.
Dude, that module is badass.
Just got the new Sony WH-1000MX4 and this sounds dope man. One of the first things I listen to with these headphones. The stereo is whack! Great one always!
Very helpful video. This has reminded me to try the ring mod side of things. Cheers.

Comedians do mic drop. Ricky does the headphone drop :D
You should get a Piston Honda.
You should get NTO by RS...
Wow great sounds !!!
I have no idea what's going on but love your work ricky
Ricky "You Know What It Does Stuff "
Me "Classic Line LOL"
"it does Stuff" Ricky 2k20
I accidentally discovered that I really like wavefolders. Bought one at my first KnobCon, and I use it to make things super dirty. This one is nice, because of the stereo output. Great groove though, even when you had the “what the hell did I just do” moment.
I think I remember when you bought that module! Was that one of your firsts?? Good to see you here Brian
Ricky Tinez it was my second module. My first module was the Blue Lantern CMOS processor, but the next day, I bought the Wavefolder from Blue Lantern Modules. Flavio was very convincing. Lol. That was the year we met for the first time. I had my scooter. You make some great videos, so I watch often. Looks like it’ll be a while before we get to hang in person again, but before too long, I’ll be on the West Coast. Keep up the great content, my friend!
You are great man! Thank you for this! Greetings from Ecuador!
I love those knobs.
Listen to the stereo field using your iphone XR, XS or newer. The stereo field goes way out of the stereo panorama of its two speakers. They probably use processing to create a phantom image way outside of the phones limits. Only works holding the phone in landscape view. Try turn it from portrait to landscape, here the difference in the stereofield.
Excellent tutorial, awesome tones !
Please update your modular video playlist! Would be nice to binge through it ☕
Great lighting dude, always gr8 sounds
Nice demo! I need a larger case now :-) and love your compact setups. Building an all Intellijel setup would be fun.
sounds really good
i think you definitely dialed in your sweetspot w/this rack; sounds awesome w/your style. drop a live set please!
heavy on sight vibes
Can you PLEASE put a sticker over that upside down intellijel logo. My ocd is killing me :P great video nonetheless
Great video! Always coming from Ricky
You have a unique approach, thanks for sharing. (new sub)
Another dope video ricky! If you dont mind me asking what camera do you use to record? It looks fantastic. Do you also use a mic to capture the music from your speakers and your voice into a daw? Im trying to understand the process of how this works
you've sold me one!
That’s tight as hell
You could realistically write out a track with a couple drum sequences, one synth lead, and just keep folding
I love you Ricky!
5:46 had my jaw hit the ground
You rock, Ricky!
Check out the stereo filter by Strange Science, I bet running the P/S outs to it would produce strait up beauty.
it do be doing stuff.
would love to hear it used on something polyphonic, say as outboard fx from DAW
¿can u make a video for basic afortable analogic techno setup?
5:50 thats my jam there homie
Thanks for the demo! Personally I prefer to stay mono as long as possible. Stereo requires either duplicates with manually matched settings, or new stereo capable modules. And every voice takes twice as many channels on an audio interface. I love Intellijel's stuff, have tons of their modules. On the fence about this one though. I typically fold before filtering, so stereo folding requires stereo filtering, two vcas, potentially stereo envelopes (although many dual/quad vcas and filters normal their modulation inputs). It basically means a full signal chain in duplicate. And don't get me started on modules that only accept mono in, but have stereo out (looking at you, reverb modules). That said, since there are stereo sound sources that already force you into this situation even earlier, I do appreciate the existence of utilities that can accommodate that. I've seen dual ring mods (or quad like Blinds), but don't recall seeing a stereo wavefolder before this one.
like #1000! great vid Ricky. I'm about to take the leap into modular synthesis. been learning a lot from you. thinking of picking up the ALM System Coupe as a starting point. any thoughts?
Sound great
Hi, first of all I love your videos! I was thinking about starting my own Hardware live setup for techno and thought maybe the Digitakt would be a good Start, so that i could build my dream Eurorack slowly, using the Digitakt as a Drum machine.
But now I saw on a lot of Forums, that the Digitakt is not the most live-capable machine and that something like a Model:Samples or Model:Cycles like you are using is way better for that purpose.
Which Synth would you choose?
Cheers!
Symmetry usually offsets the incoming wave, so one phase gets affected heavier by the folder. Pretty lame, right? Sounds great though!
Let's rock!!!
The closest thing I got to wave folding is my "volca modular"? but I am at times able to get it to sound like the Lion's Roar folding sound from coil's "Tunnel of goats" track, off their "constant shallowness leads to evil" album?
13:53 so since we haaaave
Sounds awesome! Have you tried feeding vocal samples into it?
Bastl Dude has left the chat
Psst! Try out the God's Box Loose Fruit. Utterly amazing for those crackling waveshaper stereo vibes.
Which connectors do you use to connect the model cycles to the pallette case? From googling the pallette takes type A trs inputs but I can't seem to find the right connectors anywhere.
Nasty!
Dope!
Any news on when this is coming out so I can exhaust my already exhausted pockets 😆
So dirty he straight up went to take a shower
Literally. The 99degree weather didn’t help either 😂
I did not check this in my DAW: It sounds like in stereo it is sometimes not stereo compatible. That would be a bummer in the club. Can someone check this some time? The overall sound is amazing :)
this is the first video of yours i've seen and partway through i was like wow i'm going to subscribe and subscribed real quick and then later on in the video you were like if you've made it this far you've probably already subscribed and well. you were right!
Reminds me of a cross between the bastl timber and the wave folder from the DPO
Have you tried TR8S version 2.0 yet?
I haven’t :/
@@RickyTinez Get on it, boy. Those FM voices are fire! Love your channel, btw.
Hi Ricky,
I've a modular question for U.
Do Steppy 1U and Mimetic Digitalis have the same purpose ?
I don't have the envy of duplicate stuff :)
They are completely different. They work amazing together though
I have Warps, seems very similar to Bifold.
You get a couple more perimeters
Warps for sale if anyone is looking, LOL
"...you know what? It does stuff!"
Did you ever figure out what you hit?
can we have your case on modulargrid?^^
How’s Deckard’s Dream doing?
Any chance to go "stereo". Is a chance worth taking in my book? Especially Moving in Stereo!🎹🎧💫😵😎👌👍😅✌
🥴😬😂😂🔥🔥👍🏻👍🏻🧚♂️
Sounds good but my old dx100 can make these sounds... OK only in mono
Fkn do a track with that !!!! pleeaaasseee
NEED! just like every other module you show us, lol... WHY Ricky, WHY?! #gas'd
"what did I just hit??????" .......... "Whatever, that's groovy." Haaaa😅
5:44 WHOOOOOOLLLYYYY SHIIIIIIIIIII
7:44 FUUUUUUUUUUU………………..
12:26 I love so much what I’m hearing, but the problem to me, and this is why I don’t want to enter into modular world… What if I want to keep the sound I’ve just created and I was yelling on because playing with was sooooooooooo good……..
It’s just…… Impossible.
Some guys will answer me “get sampling et voilà !!” But nope mate, I won’t be able to play with the sound like I was doing in live on the modular system…………
This is ultimately frustrating to me.
I love to create songs based on my synths sounds and playing with when I’m recording on having a live session…
So I absolutely need patches.
If only the modular/eurorack cables management could be something that we can save…………
Oh wait…….
That’s called “MATRIX” on synthesizers, like my HYDRAsynth for example…😅
Saving what we are doing is such a HUGE problem sometimes…
Nothing is more frustrating than losing our sonic creations… We are still capable to remember the sound but can’t recreate it………. SO FRUSTRATING.
WWHHHEENNNNNN ???!??!?!
