I’ve had wool area rugs for decades - through active children and pets - and they look almost as good as the day I purchased them. They’re a dream to keep clean and feel so good under foot.
Same. Ten oriental rugs from large to small, they stand the test of time, are beautiful, and feel good under bare feet. No shedding! I can't wait to have all LVP floors in the new house, to lay them directly on, instead of some of them being on carpet where we currently live.
Oriental rugs are the absolute best. They are so densely woven that nothing soaks through and are easy to clean if something falls on them. They are works of art as opposed to a rug that will not look good after if falls apart relatively quickly.
Thank you Julie, great video. Have you ever taken excess stock to an auction or use it in your client's home designs? (think Catalogue!) We have an antique Cedar chest serving as our coffee table, It's at least 120 years old. It fits in our sectional very well, it holds excess throws and pillows (and makes them smell amazing) and when it was made, the top edges and corners were all rounded enough to make me feel better about our boys toddling around it.
I’ve never even considered an auction house Kim! Thank you for the tip! I only resell my furniture to clients if it suits their aesthetic and needs. 👍🏻☺️
I tend to hang on to decorations for years but now im replacing stuff little by little. Cleaning and decluttering. Its hard but in the end its going to be worth it to finally have a nice looking home that I would be proud to invite people to visit. I cant wait to finish and have guest over.
When our child was a toddler, he kept falling on the coffee table sharp edges, and we just gave it away. We found we liked the more open space, and since we have nice end tables, we simply decided not to get another coffee table. 20 years later, we still like this look better. No one sits in the middle of the couch, so as long as you have end tables, there is a place for you to serve guests a beverage or a snack.
I got rid of that bulky coffee table right after Christmas and now it’s an empty space for my daughter to play Alex. I feel you- I love the open space, but I NEED a surface to make it more functional. Plus, it will become just another play station for her toys anyways 😂
After living in the same home for decades I feel such freedom when I pass something on. The trouble comes when family heirlooms are passed on to me. Difficult to part with those and the next generation doesn’t have much interest in them.
You mean things I got rid of ,not things you “should “ get rid of.You might not like them anymore but others still love theirs.Everyone has different taste .
I have an impending move out of state, and this video was truly motivating. I'm moving after 40 years of happy living--where we raised our family. I'm using your tips to start the reduction process before we start packing. It is very hard to get rid of some of the treasured items but very lightening to the spirit. Most treasured items: Oriental Rugs. Love them, and taking them with. Russians actually display their rugs on the walls. I may have to do that if we go to a smaller home.
Wow Cindy. 40 years of memories is a lot. Look at this move as a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. Spread your wings and transform while keeping the most beautiful pieces of yourself. Good luck in the move process.
@@selinaburford6771 Thank you Selina. 40 years can go by in a blink. I have a stupendous garden and will be starting over so I really liked the butterfly 🦋 analogy!
I hung a Persian rug that my clients brought back from their travels on a focal wall in the living room. Check out my website > Hacienda Heights project to see how it looks Cindy! Beautiful work of art, plus you don’t need to clean them. Win-win! 🙌🏻
@@JulieKhuu I really like the idea of hanging a rug, but have never done so. Do you have any video on this process? Does it change the integrity of the rug should you want to put it back to the floor? What size would be a maximum rug to hang? Ever year I take the smaller ones up to 4x6' outside for a wash and air dry. When wet some rugs are a couple hundred pounds. Each one is so beautiful. I'd like to try hanging one at my new home if there is a suitable wall and it does not permanently alter the rug.
Love so much seeing how folks change & grow in their design choices over the years...thanks so much for a glimpse into your process I had SUCH a hard time parting with my somewhat plain antique Armoire AND my painted 2 level Console made from reclaimed barnboards...but alas more functional pieces eventually made their way into my family room & are now much appreciated for their own merit!
They did their job Mari! Not all is lost, you will always have the memory of how each and every piece served you. That’s why I take a ton of pictures of my family in our space. Such a nice way to relive the memories 😍
Hilarious video. I have so much furniture that I actually rented a shop in town and am opening a vintage store so I can get rid of my stuff. I LOVE finding vintage, especially mid-century modern stuff, but don't want to hang onto it, so a little vintage store is perfect for me to buy, sell and make money doing it.
@@JulieKhuu Actually, I live in a tiny town in a very rural area in northern New Mexico, so my rent is super cheap. I live on the edge of a very large Navajo reservation and unemployment and poverty is very high. So, I buy furniture and vintage/antique items at auctions, then re-sell them in my shop. (Also refinish and refurbish the furniture if needed.) It keeps me out of trouble and helps provide a well needed service to my tiny community. I also sell online -- my community isn't really interested in higher end Limoges china (for instance), however, about once a month, I shut down my shop and hold a high tea for anyone who's interested in coming and taking a break for a couple of hours.
I loved the conversational aspect to this video; like a girlfriend talking about life changes. My most treasured piece of furniture is a vintage six strand rattan chair I bought secondhand in 1994. It's been a chair fort for my grandkids and goes with many design styles I've had over the years. I saw one on Idibs for $1850+ but would never sell it. It's back in fashion now with it's curved design. It needs new upholstery on the cushions ( it's natural twill ) but for now looks good with a cream colored throw. I also love William Morris's quote and live by it. I can't wait to see your new pieces. I vote for coffee table #3.😉
I have so many pieces (still) in storage that I scored on Craigslist for cheap and would fetch crazy prices on 1stDibs or Chairish if I sold them. But one day, my daughter will love said piece and make it her own. It’s all about keeping the valuables Lori. The mass-produced, not so much 🙌🏻
@@JulieKhuu Your children will have their own style and be influenced by partners and experential media. Keep little for them. Just the clear cut will and deeds to inherit dwellings. Read Kahlil Gibran on "Children."
@Lori Walter Hi Lori I really liked your comment and it got me thinking about how certain pieces of furniture or art have been a part of our lives and they have memories bound to them. I am talking about special pieces like your chair....I'm sure it holds many wonderful memories. I live in California, but grew up in Oregon and Germany, so unfortunately many of my families pieces didn't make the trek with me to California. Now that I'm older and more sentimental, I deeply regret not keeping some of our family "treasures ". Another good quote is "Youth is wasted on the young." Not sure who said it, but so true in my case. I left pieces I would love to have now, I just thought I will buy new furniture at Ikea....lol....what a foolish girl I was. Anyway thanks for your comment, it really got me thinking. Sorry for rambling on...
This is the nesting instinct kikking in! 😅💯💘🍀🌠 I've made similar decisions over the last 12 months (although not pregnant) and i am not missing any items! Joshua Becker's YT channel has also helped me deal with getting rid of useless sentimental items!
Every time I lease a new apt, I redo something. My style changes also. I want to be fresh but not look like I just went to buy everything. It's hard NOT TO BUY little inexpensive things to go everywhere but I think it looks tacky to do that. I try to get 1 bigger item.
You nailed it Jhulie. I am living in an apartment and I loved going to thrift stores too. But I got rid of rugs, beautiful boxes, and etc. thanks for sharing. 💖😷🙏🏽
Great tips on getting pieces you will love and treasure! Since Covid started two years ago, I’ve been slowly improving my home and getting small decorative pieces (not furniture yet) so I definitely remember this video and not go overboard on shopping at Target and other stores!
My husband and I re-designed our 1980's rambler into a Craftsman. It is now very cute! He started inside before the addition, and I love this house now. We're not done yet, but it will be fabulous. One of my favorite things so far is our hall bath. It has a claw foot tub, reproduction pharmacy cabinate and beautiful wainscoting all around the room as well as a beautiful wooden pocket door. All made by my husband. But you were asking for the favorite thing. In our family room we have craftsman style couches and recliners as well as a gas fireplace with a beautiful tile surround and mantle. The wool rug is something I lamented over and finally, just bought it. I have never been sorry. It is a thing of beauty. It anchors the room and adds a loveliness that warms my heart. i guess the rug would be my favorite thing. It's all wool, has beautiful colors that tie in with the tile surround of the fireplace. It feels good under foot and to just look at it. Right up there is my bathroom that my husband made just for me. The space is beautiful, and brings me joy every day. Kim D. Brookeville, Maryland
I love this Kim! I was following along every word and can envision it now! Your space sounds beautifully collected and personal 😍 Buy well, cry once! That’s my motto 🙌🏻
My most loved piece is a round hammered copper end table with a minimal design base. The rest of the furniture could burn down with the house and I wouldn’t miss it. I’m an organized hoarder. I have quite a few small accent lamps that I change out according to my moods. I also decorate for the seasons which takes up a lot of organized room in the garage. It’s starting to become overload however. Getting rid of things is very difficult for me. New to your channel and love your content 😍
Hey, I did decide to finally get some personal art and frame some pictures of places I’ve travel to.for my new place and I love it. Thanks for the advice.
Great video with photo examples both of what you parted with and what pieces could replace them. Useful for the phase we're in now...purging prior to moving. We have one year!
It’s a sign you’re a minimalist at heart, when after you have the floors professionally cleaned, you don’t want to put anything back. It’s definitely time to purge.
My most treasured pieces are my dining table and china cabinet from Ethan Allen bought at totally different times but go beautifully together. I know people don’t go for china cabinets anymore, but back in the day, I was given my mother’s gorgeous Waterford collection and dishes that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. I have no children, so these pieces will end up in the landfill when I’m gone and the china cabinet let’s me display them for me to look at regularly and remember my mother’s advice of actually using the Waterford crystal … then being responsible for hand washing it after Thanksgiving dinner. I really wish I could find someone who would use the crystal and enjoy it.
China cabinets can be absolutely functional when used with your intent. To display (and cherish) collectible china and crystal. Not so functional and beautiful when they simply house random tchotchkes and a build up of mismatched plates and cups like my Mom had in hers 😂
There are plenty of ways you can make sure your beautiful Waterford collection doesn’t end up in a landfill - donate (at some point or you could state in your will) to a women’s shelter, the Salvation Army, a family in need, a Restore etc.
Great video!! Children bring a new energy into our spaces...safety and function first! Our creativity gets challenged in a good way...have a great day 🥰
I’ve actually only been there once to see what the difference was between them and Michaels. Lots more home decor, but not the best prices or quality Janice. You’re absolutely right
Again thank you. Yes keep what you love and use. William Morris was right. Wool rugs are the best. They can be pick upped and cleaned when needed. I have one that is over 100 yrs old. It looks good with many different styles from victorian, MCM, cottagecore etc.
My daughter spent thousands of dollars on a huge wool rug and her dog chewed a big chunk out of it and it was irreparable. Big money down the drain. ☹️
I got rid of all my dead flowers and leaves etc like your feng shui video suggested. I also moved my bedroom around. I LOVE all your videos. Thank you! Please do more feng shui and remodelling videos. x
Children are certainly little life changers as are pets, I’m finding out! We gave away all of our glass topped furniture too when we had kids. My daughter has my beautiful Persian Heriz rug because our little rescue dog kept peeing on it!😳We thought he was potty trained, but he wasn’t. Although he is now. So expensive rugs are NOT recommended with pets! Congrats on #2 baby, Julie!✌️
My fur babies are potty trained! The older Yorkshire I trained myself at 3 months but it just seemed my white shag area rug was just soft indoor grass for her. After adopting a second 10 year old who was trained as well, it was just a never ending battle of peeing on the same territory. Finally just threw it out and got a new one without odour history. I would love to know if anyone has any ideas, commercial deterent sprays don’t seem to do the job and need a rug to pull the room together and warm it up
@@850081236 it’s better to be able to throw a rug away and buy new then to have it professionally cleaned. Even with the cleaning, I feel like dogs can still smell where they peed before and will do it again!
Things have sure changed since I was a child. My parents didn’t worry about sharp edges or clutter from toys in the living room because that was an adult space. We played and messed up our bedrooms or in one home a basement play space. I love your videos but was laughing at the thought of my sister and I playing in the living room! Quelle horrors! Never!
My pieces I let go are old mass produced art that were given to us.. An old chair that had an outdated style. And we got rid of an old coffee table.. We donate most of our stuff.. Even old art pieces I made that I am tired of(If relatives don't want them). I just don"t have a big enough house to store all of it. 1300 sq..ft on each floor. I only keep the art I created that has an emotional attachmet or that turned out well.. Isn't it amazing how little ones change your space...? Like...Did I ever think we would amass a collection of Thomas the Tank Engine trains and wooden track and train table. And how our son loved to build the tracks all around our main floor space. It was fine with us as we spent time building it with him and playing with him. But when he went off to bed and we were walking around boy did it hurt to step on the trains. Almost as bad as stepping on legos. But we did have to incorporate many play areas into our home. We were not parents that were hung up on secluding our son into his room to play. He played everywhere. I did not mind(as long as the kitchen was off limits)as they are little just for a while. Now our son is 21 and in college and we have been enjoying a more adult space for a while now. Except for gaming stuff... So now I play around with design more and creating my own original art for spaces.. It has been a hoot! And picking up tips from sites like yours is very helpful. Thanks greatly! 😊
Same here. My daughter has a play area in every room of the home. She even has her own “Tupperware play drawer” in the kitchen. The remaining cabinets are child-proofed. Much like my fur babies who have a bed in every single room in the house. A home should be lived in, not too precious that formal spaces are off limits I believe 👍🏻☺️
Thank you for the tips. I just decluttered our home and got rid of several family room furniture pieces and lamps that were no longer functional for our family. I highly recommend a round coffee table. We’ve never had this shape before, but it’s absolutely perfect! No sharp edges and takes up less space. Good luck replacing your pieces!
Ah Julie , you always seem to know my next move. I think this video was made for my overwhelming dilemma of clutter that I really struggle to part with. Every drawer, every bit of additional storage I have purchased to put something is littered with stuff I needed at that moment but then never got around to completing. I then go to find it , fail and just re buy it easier than trying to find it. Then came my fascination and passion for house plants, which escalated quickly doing lockdown. I have down sized the huge 6 seater dining table as it was just a dumping ground to a neat circle 4 seater which is just a smaller dumping ground that needs de cluttering for us to eat at. I intend to ebay or sell everything as to me it’s still valuable but I rarely have time and from there I have wardrobes and cupboards that are crammed with stuff. And my mum has recently just passed away and she has 5 wardrobes and a huge house full of stuff I can’t yet part with and have no room to take right now. So I have stepped outside my comfort zone after 18 years and got a job which is so much less stressful (hopefully ) and will (hopefully ) give me the time I need to get my space clearer so I can be less frantic and relax more as I’m working from home. I’m currently in the process of de cluttering the spare room to make it an office. Bring in some plants to and relax. Your quote I have screen shot and set as my phone wall paper and I’m going to step by step challenge myself to do one room at a time . .and hopefully have the spare time during the day to finally pass on the stuff I can’t currently toss in the bin. Starting with artwork and then floor space . Thanks so much for your phenomenal advice as always .. you are so logical and think in a way I can relate to , despite your home being like a show house and mine a jungle/ work in progress 🥰xxx
Comments like these are exactly why I make these videos Joanne 🥰 Thank you for taking the time to share and send such thoughtful feedback. I’m the same way. I spend time organizing things right out of their place and now with a second baby coming, I imagine the “piles of stuff” will just get worse if I don’t clear and de clutter as much as I can now. Start where you are, do what you can, use what you have. I love that quote and try to remember it every time I feel overwhelmed. Chunk down the bits, write it all down and come up with a plan. Tackle the room you use the most and you will build the momentum for the rest. 🙌🏻 You got this!!
@@JulieKhuu I have began in the spare bedroom as it’s the worst , everything gets flung in there and the door shut. Half the rooms perfect, and a mountain on the other side .. but every day I’m putting something the car with stuff to donate , pass on … just not return home with.. 1 item everyday to go somewhere is a promise I have made myself.. and if it’s two or 3 all the better .. I still have a load of baby stuff and my youngest is 9 .. That’s another angle I could tackle easily , thank you 😊 xx
Exactly. I’m finding that out now. I barely have time to sort my daughter’s knick knacks, let alone get to my own! Best to purge and live simply with the things I absolutely adore Sandra 👍🏻☺️
I remember baby proofing. I had two 16 months apart. It’s very important to consider safety. Get rid of sharp edged furniture and slippery floors. Stairs must be carpeted for safety. Everything changes for the children. It’s worth it and it’s your job. Consider not getting a coffee table. They like sitting on the floor and the more open it is the better and they can move more easily. Pedestal tables are bad bc they hang off edges. After a while you will be able to go back to your own style. But for now you are doing the right thing. I had a futon too. Tossed it a few years ago. But kept the futon cover. It was a nice one. You look terrific! 👍🏻🤗🥰
You are the loveliest Mom! ♥ Your kid is very lucky :) I would probably just scare mine so she would not touch the tables :)))) That is basically what my family members did. I remember them telling me "If you damage the furniture, there will be hell to pay!" I once by accident sat on the glass top for the Granny's coffee table that she for some reason put across the armchair. Nevermind that I had cuts on my butt from it, Granny hit me a few times with her slipper and was yelling at me for the next few hours :)
We are all in different stages of our lives, and there are so many opinions on things! My kids are grown and my grandkids are no longer babies, so I don’t have to worry about safety like Julie does. I do have a glass coffee table and didn’t change it out just because I had grand babies, though. Lol I think she has some great points about being practical, but to each their own! My daughter spent thousands on a huge wool rug, which she thought she’d have forever. Well, her dog chewed up a corner of it and completely ruined it. The weave was kind of braided in a way that she couldn’t even have it cut down to make use of it in another room. THAT was a huge expense! A cheaper rug would have made more sense with a puppy. 🤦♀️🤷♀️😜
@@JulieKhuu I absolutely love you and your videos! You are an amazing designer and I appreciate your wisdom and insights and talent so much! God bless you as you get ready to add another baby to your family! You are in the most special time of your life- enjoy every minute of it!
i realized a long time ago--you can admire the beauty of something without having to collect (hoard) it! 😆 Something that helps me let go of possessions is to thank it for its service, as per marie condo, and taking it one step further--thank it for serving others. for some reason, that makes it doable for me to pass things on. thanks for your inspiration, jk! i was doing some paperwork purging tonight while i watched your video.
I also live by admiring things and enjoying their qualities without having to bring it home. I sew my own clothes so you can imagine how fabrics can accumulate if your not careful.
Thanks. With much respect, I am honestly curious about the quality of your sisal, why it would disintegrate so badly over time. Glad that jute and wool works for you though. …I do like my “area rugs”, er, mats, actually. They are small and useful. Cheers.
Julie..Thank you for your advice from.your experience. I am moving so appreciate it. My brother brought back a 45" French mirror for me. I developed a French bedroom having it as the center. Blessings & Happiness!
Oh man… I really must be a BAD mother…. In our house if my son whacked his head he learnt not to do it again! I don’t think I could replace things I truely loved to save my boy(he’s 33 now) from hurting himself! How else do kids learn not to run through the house if they don’t bean themselves occasionally? I’m an Australian mum…we tend to raise the kids different from you lot in America!
That bit about rugs that shed.... AMEN lol. We got a shaggy rug in our first apartment, and I always joked that it should be bare of shag given how much of it I vacuumed up all around the house.
Maybe it’s time to move. Perhaps having more space , the younger child can have dedicated space for her. Just sayin’. I do agree getting rid of mass produced art work! Kudos to you!
I’ve always been a great spur of the moment purger but now that I live in a studio apartment, I am taking my time doing everything. I have essentials…sofa, bed, tv stand & tv plus a rug for sofa area. Still want one for under my bed
Can you offer tips or make a video on how to get rid of furniture? I'm trying to do that now and having a really hard time finding places to donate that will pick up. Should I rent a U- haul?
You can try to sell first on FB marketplace/OfferUp Patricia. If it’s trashed/ unsellable, your local waste management company will pick up up to 20 bulk items 3 times per year for free (at least here in Southern CA they do). Contact your waste management company for more information! I use pickupplease dot org for my smaller items- they won’t pick up large furniture pieces
If the images are predominantly black, the north wall is best. If you don’t follow Feng Shui guides, anywhere you like Josie. Check out my video on how to install a gallery wall for more tips 👍🏻☺️
Excellent video! I'm moving! I bought a smaller home - I'm downsizing. This video is so timely for me! I can't take all my furniture with me and now I'll watch this video again n again to make my move n decorating so much more doable! Thank you Julie!!
How exciting Estrella! Let me know what else you might need help sourcing or replacing! Also the small series has a ton of space-saving tips and resources 👍🏻☺️
I have a very old loveseat that was in my grandmothers house growing up. I will never part with it but I have been thinking it may be time to have it recovered.
We moved our glass table to another room and used the Fisher-Price pic nic table for a coffee table, and I’m terrible but I also had a plastic tablecloth under it , because life happens! It’s about the kids, we did crafts there, had snacks, drawing with crayons, play-do, etc …..good times, good times, lol, 😊💕and after that we did the big train table with drawers…..when our boys got towards the end of grade school I found a big square table with wooden top and ulpoltered sides and a huge drawer for games….for $75, so I reapolstered it in our pillow fabric and it’s still in our family room
We bought a cottage last year (not much space though) and we are very careful what furniture or decor comes into the house. We have set the rule, that we only buy an item if we have a place for it. So far it's working very well. Due to having 2 cats no area rugs in this house ...
Why not buy original art from artists instead of prints from big box stores? Go to galleries, look online and get something real whether it’s a painting or sculpture or whatever it is and collect art from travels as well. Your home will look like real home not a showroom home where you happen to spend your life. Get nice baskets for the toys and keep stuff off the floor. I am an artist and art instructor. When people buy my art they really love it. It warms their heart.
Thank you for watching Elisabeth. Unfortunately a lot of us need inspiration on where to shop. It doesn’t come naturally to know where and how. Thank you for your insight 🙏🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu I understand. Most ppl do r know about local artists and galleries, juried shows. It’s fun to visit them. And not always expensive. Art communities can use support. Love your channel ❤️
This was so helpful to me. I always have a hard time letting go of things in my home, and it looked like a thrift shop. I followed your advice and now feel free, happy and relaxed in my home. Before I felt overwhelmed every time I walked through the door. A couple of my favorite items I kept are sterling silver candleholder from my mom, and some southwestern Indian pottery from my father. I love the William Morris quote you shared. It's my new mantra when decorating my little home. Thank you so much 💗
The French Country China Cabinet. Loved it, but good Lord it couldn’t ever be moved, didn’t fit in with new ‘modern’ update and the shabby chic paint just looked out of place. I’m over it - I think. 🙄🤔 Also love quote from the blind side “If you don’t love it today, you’re sure not going to love it later.”
Hi Julie, my most treasured item is an antique wardrobe I bought for 25.00. My brother stripped it and I never put any finish on it. I recently purged some green plastic deck chairs. The stacking ones that were 5 bucks each 30 years ago when forest green was in. Yuck !
You’re such a bad bishh, love your content! Also- Where did you buy that canvas paper? I’ve been wanting to change out my multi frame wall with one single large piece .. TIA!
Hi, I've ticked these boxes already ! , about a month back - So v happy now as you have kind of given me permission to do so :) - ? I guess a plush tufted ottoman as a coffee table with the tray , which 'should' match the sectional colour, is out of the question as it's not child friendly I guess , with tippy things ? ..I'm single so no worries but do see that you work on your coffee table . Thank you muchly for another very helpful video :) * Connection = key word for me *
My favorite items are our huge taupe sectional ( that I change the pillows out for the seasons……and accessories, red, green, tapastry/nuetral, lavender and orange) , our gold lattice like table lamps, and my sofa and coffee table which are glass and wrought iron from the Bombay Co, which has gold scrolled badges on it and my 3ft tall wall relief of a cherub holding flowers in an antique gold finish. Oh and my treasure which is a floor model victrola which now houses a small tv! (Which was my grandmother’s back in the day! )…love your channel, by the way!
I have a gold velvet slipper chair that is just like one my grandma had. I bought it at an antique store years and years ago when I was really broke and shouldn’t have spent the money. But I hat the warm fuzzies every time I look at it, even some 20 years later. And it serves absolutely zero other purpose.
I believe your decor and designs grows with you. Your style can change with your experiences, surroundings or moods. Your living space becomes a refection of you and it took me many years to realize that connection. Your video is a wonderful example of living in your home and making changes with your growing family. God Bless.
My absolute favorite item is a zebra photograph I have from Thomas Mangelsen that shows two zebras running and reflects the energy I want to have in my home office space. You touched on a piece of art you have in the background in this video as part of your Zoom backdrop. I would love to see a video about creating amazing Zoom backdrops that serve us in our home offices, not only personally - but extending to those we connect with every day. I'm about to move to a new apartment and I'm only bringing a few pieces of furniture. I can't wait to decorate everything and will be using many of your videos to help! 😄
Thanks for the videos and advice. Do you have a video on a fireplace (not a corner fireplace) that needs an update. I don't want a TV over the fireplace and I want to keep a raised hearth.. Do you have advice for a family room fireplace with lots of leather? Thanks!
The long and narrow room plus the short L-shaped room in the awkward space series both feature fireplaces Rebecca! I would go for contrast against the leather. Dark leather, light fireplace and vice versa. Hope you find what you’re looking for 👍🏻☺️
We got rid of all of our area rugs. They collected way too much fur and our cats seemed to always be on them when they "got rid of furballs". Also, and this was tough, parting ways with old "family treasures" that we inherited. We still have quite a few antique chests, etc. But at some point, it's important to choose your own style and not let what other people's tastes define yours.
Absolutely Liz! It also helps to take family photographs, even casual candid ones in front of these heirloom furniture pieces. That way, once they get donated, you’ll always have a beautiful memory of when they lived alongside the family ☺️
Great video and info. It can be hard to part with some furniture. I have inherited an old grandfather clock from my husband's family that has been in the family since 1799 and is still working. We are in our sixties and have recently downsized and the clock is just something that has to be squeezed in or worked around. It can be tricky near doors or windows but I'm getting used to living with it now. It's also a talking point when people visit and useful too :)
I replaced a leather chair that was too bulky and dark with 2 cream colored barrel chairs. I replace my old rug, which was still in good condition, just needed to brighten room. soooo happy! thank you Julie
Such a great video! Very enjoyable and informative! I try to remember to keep what’s working now and there will be another time I can go hunting again!
I totally feel you on the sisal rug. I had a jute rug and h loved the look but it was uncomfortable feel, and it didnt stop shedding!! No matter how much I vacuumed, the fibers stuck to my socks. I got rid of it, and had to vacuum/mop my floors very well to clean the mess.
Jute is supposed to be softer than sisal, but all natural fibers shed unfortunately. Mine wasn’t worth the mess either. Time to invest in silk/wool, the ultimate in luxury 😍
My favorite piece of furniture is a cypress root coffee table my parents passed down. It is odd shaped and a piece of art. The problem is it has to be pushed to a corner when little ones come over. They understand grandma won't get rid of her dog, cats or coffee table. But when I buy anything for my living room, it needs to go with the table. I hope to keep it and pass down to my kids or grandkids (they'll have to draw straws 😉)
I have a friend that's always on the look out for the next biggest best and the Deal she can't resist, she rotates her decor from the collection/selection in her garage and basement, bringing in new things, relegating previous treasures, instead of investing in very fine quality art and furniture that remains timeless. Goodwill and Landfills, too full
I was watching the video and nodding my head 😁. I have been playing musical chairs with my furniture ever since my son was born. I also got rid of my coffee table, sisal rug, glass furniture and have almost no decor on my (very few) surfaces. But it's ok. I'm embracing this season and the fact the house represents that. Great video, as usual 😘
The last time I moved, I purged so much home decor. Most of it was trendy stuff, that was no longer trending lol. I think it is better to have a few quality pieces that you love, and as you say, have meaning.
I’ve had wool area rugs for decades - through active children and pets - and they look almost as good as the day I purchased them. They’re a dream to keep clean and feel so good under foot.
Me, too. Our rugs are 20+ years old. I maintain them and simply switch out the furniture placement or something else.
@@cynthiafialka1199 you are right!
Yup, that’s what I’m investing in next C! Wool rugs for every room in the home. It’s about time I get that texture back 😍
I firmly believe every home should have one oddball, quirky, ugly object that never fails to spark interesting conversations.
Totally! 🙌🏻 For me, it’s my homemade DIY art! 😂
Thank you Julie, great video. Have you ever taken excess stock to an auction or use it in your client's home designs? (think Catalogue!)
We have an antique Cedar chest serving as our coffee table, It's at least 120 years old.
@@JulieKhuu You could have space in your garage, Yay!
I had decluttered my home. It is an amazing feeling now with less furnitures and clothes. Also feeling like a new home now 👍👍
👏🏼 yessss! I got rid of boxes & boxes of things. I just needed better fitting clothes, I kept my favorite pieces only. Samething with furniture. 🥰
That’s all it takes sometimes Chitra! Like a breath of fresh air 🙌🏻
Me too - amazing how much better it looks with “less”!
I tend to hang on to decorations for years but now im replacing stuff little by little. Cleaning and decluttering. Its hard but in the end its going to be worth it to finally have a nice looking home that I would be proud to invite people to visit. I cant wait to finish and have guest over.
That’s the best feeling Lady! When you’re surrounded by everything you love and curated 🙌🏻
@@JulieKhuu I did the same for my granddaughter. It's an open play ground lol
After living in the same home for decades I feel such freedom when I pass something on. The trouble comes when family heirlooms are passed on to me. Difficult to part with those and the next generation doesn’t have much interest in them.
I learned from Marie Kondo, you don’t want to pass your burdens onto others as well Donna. Just something to keep in mind to retain that joy! ✨
You mean things I got rid of ,not things you “should “ get rid of.You might not like them anymore but others still love theirs.Everyone has different taste .
Sure Li. To each their own. I also made a video called 10 easy ways to make your home look more expensive. Not “my” home. “Your” home 😉
Love so much seeing how folks change & grow in their design choices over the
years...thanks so much for a glimpse
into your process
I had SUCH a hard time parting with my
somewhat plain antique Armoire AND my painted 2 level Console made from reclaimed barnboards...but alas
more functional pieces eventually made their way into my family room & are now
much appreciated for their own merit!
Brilliant idea!
That’s the dream Enfin! One day when I’m too tired to schlep furniture and decor all over town for my clients 😅
I left you a message but not sure I put it in the right place.
This is the nesting instinct kikking in! 😅💯💘🍀🌠 I've made similar decisions over the last 12 months (although not pregnant) and i am not missing any items! Joshua Becker's YT channel has also helped me deal with getting rid of useless sentimental items!
Same here. I don’t miss anything I’ve tossed. Need to check out his channel, thank you for the intro! 🙏🏻☺️
Kids ruin everything. lol j/k Seriously though so much redecorating has to happen with kids around. lol
Haha one day I shall get my home back Canon! 🙌🏻😂
Love this video. My mom is an artist and is 92 years young. Her paintings are most valuable to me.
Oh I love that Mary! 😍
Every time I lease a new apt, I redo something. My style changes also. I want to be fresh but not look like I just went to buy everything. It's hard NOT TO BUY little inexpensive things to go everywhere but I think it looks tacky to do that. I try to get 1 bigger item.
Nice Julie. Simply the message of this video is that "be practical" and practice safe design. =)
Then follow with beautiful and stylish pieces of course 👍🏻☺️
You nailed it Jhulie. I am living in an apartment and I loved going to thrift stores too. But I got rid of rugs, beautiful boxes, and etc. thanks for sharing. 💖😷🙏🏽
I spent so much time thrifting those items, and spending an equal amount of time purging them Beth 😂
Oh! Good to know, I have to replace a glass table. I don't like it anymore
That’s the first indication Divine 👍🏻
Great tips on getting pieces you will love and treasure! Since Covid started two years ago, I’ve been slowly improving my home and getting small decorative pieces (not furniture yet) so I definitely remember this video and not go overboard on shopping at Target and other stores!
That’s how Target gets us Susan! Come for shampoo and all of a sudden I’m walking out with a cart full of rugs and home decor 😂
Well timed jk
I needed these ideas
Tc dear j😀😍
This comes as I’m starting to clean out my closet! 😆
The purge just feels great 🙌🏻
My husband and I re-designed our 1980's rambler into a Craftsman.

Out with the uninspired, in with the fresh new energy Sweet Pea! I know you know what still “sparks joy” 😉
Hey, I did decide to finally get some personal art and frame some pictures of places I’ve travel to.for my new place and I love it. Thanks for the advice.
That is awesome! 🙌
Great video with photo examples both of what you parted with and what pieces could replace them. Useful for the phase we're in now...purging prior to moving. We have one year!
This is the best time to plan the design so you’re not in a mad rush Claudia! 🙌🏻
It’s a sign you’re a minimalist at heart, when after you have the floors professionally cleaned, you don’t want to put anything back. It’s definitely time to purge.
The older I get, the less fussy I want my surroundings ☺️
Our creativity gets challenged in a good way...have a great day 🥰
I live for a good challenge and a change of scenery Julie! 👍🏻☺️
Don't know why so many people go to Hobby Lobby. Their items are made poorly and nothing but junk that ends up in the trash.
Sounds like the dream rug Jill!
Oh no NDGrandma! Proceed with caution if you have dogs that use furniture and decor as chew toys 😅
I got rid of all my dead flowers and leaves etc like your feng shui video suggested. I also moved my bedroom around. I LOVE all your videos. Thank you! Please do more feng shui and remodelling videos. x
Awesome Claire! Doesn’t the air just feel fresher 🙌🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu Sure does! Thank you again so much for your fantastic teachings.
Thank you Kristina! I’ve raised fur babies for the last 20 years so I’ve been in training for a looong time 😂
Try outdoor rugs that are soft enough to use indoors Dina. You can simply bring it outside and spray down with high-pressure water plus detergent.
Your a real woman.we need change.i have a lot I don’t get rid of .hubby likes everything from his past.I’m doing a little each year.thanks
A little purging each month will hardly make a noticeable dent Marlene 👍🏻☺️
Very useful video as usual.I got rid of furniture in the basement that I might use one day and felt so good.
That’s how I felt about my garage Amel! Now time to make the space more functional 🙌🏻
Never!
Haha times they are a changin’ Lisa! I remember those days well 😅
My pieces I let go are old mass produced art that were given to us..
Yes, round is what I’m going for now 🙌🏻
I got rid of my glass coffee table when my grandchildren came along. I was always terrified they would shatter the glass and hurt themselves.
Yup, that’s exactly where I am at this stage Beverly. 👍🏻
Got rid of my glass tables a few years ago, thinking about getting rid of oval coffee table and round end tables and a love seat, also a long dresser.
Offer up and FB marketplace are great places to sell if you don’t donate them Annette!
With children, less is more. Otherwise, the rooms never seem to be neat or organized.
Thank you for the pedestal table tip! I didn’t even think of that 👍🏻☺️
First one ☝🏻
You are the loveliest Mom! ♥ Your kid is very lucky :) I would probably just scare mine so she would not touch the tables :)))) That is basically what my family members did. I remember them telling me "If you damage the furniture, there will be hell to pay!" I once by accident sat on the glass top for the Granny's coffee table that she for some reason put across the armchair. Nevermind that I had cuts on my butt from it, Granny hit me a few times with her slipper and was yelling at me for the next few hours :)
Haha that was definitely the old school way of how I was raised as well Anna! We knew better than to mess with the formal furniture 😅
I do the same....I am always moving, changing, re-decorating my house
A refresh is good for the soul and Feng Shui Ann 👍🏻☺️
I will always keep my glass dining table. So much easier to keep clean
I LOVED our glass tables and got a good 6 years use out of them. Both vintage, both Craigslist’d so my cost per wear was minimal Terry 😂
I went through so many rugs, so many puppies. I didn’t spend more than $400 on each rug, so throwing them out didn’t hurt quite as much NDGrandma 😅
@@JulieKhuu I absolutely love you and your videos! You are an amazing designer and I appreciate your wisdom and insights and talent so much! God bless you as you get ready to add another baby to your family! You are in the most special time of your life- enjoy every minute of it!

When you have a young family it is so important to feng shui with the little ones in mind--safety, ease of cleaning, comfort. Love your videos!
Comfort and safety has definitely been a priority these days! Followed by stylish and beautiful of course ☺️
i realized a long time ago--you can admire the beauty of something without having to collect (hoard) it! 😆
Something that helps me let go of possessions is to thank it for its service, as per marie condo, and taking it one step further--thank it for serving others. for some reason, that makes it doable for me to pass things on. thanks for your inspiration, jk! i was doing some paperwork purging tonight while i watched your video.
I also learned from Marie Kondo that we shouldn’t pass on our “burdens” to others as well. Best to donate and let someone shop what they need. 🙌🏻
I also live by admiring things and enjoying their qualities without having to bring it home. I sew my own clothes so you can imagine how fabrics can accumulate if your not careful.
Thank you for the tips. We are in the process of changing things around once again, this time for our grandbabies!
We all have certain phases of life to design around Irini ☺️👍🏻
Thanks. With much respect, I am honestly curious about the quality of your sisal, why it would disintegrate so badly over time. Glad that jute and wool works for you though. …I do like my “area rugs”, er, mats, actually. They are small and useful. Cheers.
I paid $200 for this sisal rug from Overstock. Not the best which is why I gather it was so cheap and fraying

Lol my Mom is you. You are my mom 😂
That bit about rugs that shed.... AMEN lol. We got a shaggy rug in our first apartment, and I always joked that it should be bare of shag given how much of it I vacuumed up all around the house.
All rugs shed, some just shed less over the years 😅
Maybe it’s time to move. Perhaps having more space , the younger child can have dedicated space for her. Just sayin’. I do agree getting rid of mass produced art work! Kudos to you!
Imagine if that was my response to viewers’ home issues… just move! 😂

@@JulieKhuu thank you!! Can't wait for next video!!!
i purged all my treasures next door to my kids. its amazing what purging does to a space. Great video.
That’s the first and most important step in design MM 🙌🏻
Amen! Wish I could click a “Love” button instead of only the “Like” button!
Thank you for watching ShaMama! 🙏🏻☺️
I have a very old loveseat that was in my grandmothers house growing up. I will never part with it but I have been thinking it may be time to have it recovered.
Time for a refresh 😍🙌🏻
you were smart to get rid of the glass...a plastic surgeon I know said the worst case he ever saw was one child under and one over playing ...
Oh no 😔
I think the title is misleading--it should be "Things I decided to get rid of today".
Sure, that too. Thank you for watching Vickie! 👍🏻☺️
Thank you Julie ...I love sisal not alot af cohorts in my area
You are so welcome, thank you for watching Annette! 🙏🏻☺️
Your work is so amazing, i would travel to US and work free for you.
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Recently got rid of old rugs and junk decor!!! yippee!!
🙌🏻 Spring cleaning in full effect Marcia!
So “everyone” should get rid of these things “today” because you have a toddler? I don’t get it. (But I only got through the first two examples.)
I didn’t label “everyone” in the title Lorraine ☺️
My rule is one thing in, one thing out Katrin 🙌🏻 Definitely helps to keep the clutter in check! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Jute disintegrates too, just like sisal. My cats tore it up.
I had jute, I prefer sisal. But yes, all natural fibers so shed so buyer beware!
Besides my husband i love my natural cherry table .
Haha good one, can’t get rid of either 🙌🏻☺️
Great video! Very good advice, thank you. ❤
Thank you for watching Becky! 🙏🏻💕
Thanks Julie! You are the best❤️ so talented!
Thank you for watching Christine 🙏🏻☺️
This was so helpful to me. I always have a hard time letting go of things in my home, and it looked like a thrift shop. I followed your advice and now feel free, happy and relaxed in my home. Before I felt overwhelmed every time I walked through the door. A couple of my favorite items I kept are sterling silver candleholder from my mom, and some southwestern Indian pottery from my father. I love the William Morris quote you shared. It's my new mantra when decorating my little home. Thank you so much 💗
Oh I love that Katja! Editing gives us an opportunity to see things as they really are and not be cluttered by too much “stuff” 👍🏻☺️
The French Country China Cabinet. Loved it, but good Lord it couldn’t ever be moved, didn’t fit in with new ‘modern’ update and the shabby chic paint just looked out of place. I’m over it - I think. 🙄🤔
Also love quote from the blind side “If you don’t love it today, you’re sure not going to love it later.”
Ooh that’s an awesome quote! Best to make sure before you donate 😬
Reformed recovering furniture hoarder? Love it
Haha it’s the truth as my garage can attest
Hi Julie, my most treasured item is an antique wardrobe I bought for 25.00. My brother stripped it and I never put any finish on it.
I recently purged some green plastic deck chairs. The stacking ones that were 5 bucks each 30 years ago when forest green was in. Yuck !
I’m sure those deck chairs were super useful during their lifespan! Time to replace with ones you love Helena 🙌🏻
You’re such a bad bishh, love your content!
Also- Where did you buy that canvas paper? I’ve been wanting to change out my multi frame wall with one single large piece .. TIA!
Thank you for watching Niko! I link the fabrics and paper I used in my DIY artwork video. Check the description box 👍🏻☺️
Thank you muchly for another very helpful video :) * Connection = key word for me *
I have a huge coffee table roundup video coming up in a couple weeks Nick! Hope you find some more inspiration. Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
You’ll keep those treasures forever Lynette! 🙌🏻😍
I have a gold velvet slipper chair that is just like one my grandma had. I bought it at an antique store years and years ago when I was really broke and shouldn’t have spent the money. But I hat the warm fuzzies every time I look at it, even some 20 years later. And it serves absolutely zero other purpose.
Sentiment and beauty will take our beloved furniture pieces very far Terri 👍🏻😍
I believe your decor and designs grows with you. Your style can change with your experiences, surroundings or moods. Your living space becomes a refection of you and it took me many years to realize that connection. Your video is a wonderful example of living in your home and making changes with your growing family. God Bless.
My home will be ever evolving as I will be Mary ☺️
My absolute favorite item is a zebra photograph I have from Thomas Mangelsen that shows two zebras running and reflects the energy I want to have in my home office space. You touched on a piece of art you have in the background in this video as part of your Zoom backdrop. I would love to see a video about creating amazing Zoom backdrops that serve us in our home offices, not only personally - but extending to those we connect with every day. I'm about to move to a new apartment and I'm only bringing a few pieces of furniture. I can't wait to decorate everything and will be using many of your videos to help! 😄
That would definitely be a relevant topic, especially for those working from home Liz! Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts 🙏🏻☺️
When furniture or decor becomes a topic of conversation, I wouldn’t get rid of it either Joan! 😍👍🏻
I replaced a leather chair that was too bulky and dark with 2 cream colored barrel chairs. I replace my old rug, which was still in good condition, just needed to brighten room. soooo happy! thank you Julie
Two really IS better than one when scaled correctly Annette 🙌🏻 Awesome, thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
So inspiring and informative
Thank you for watching Teresa 🙏🏻☺️
Such a great video! Very enjoyable and informative!
I try to remember to keep what’s working now and there will be another time I can go hunting again!
Thank you for watching D! 🙏🏻☺️
They’ll fight for it when they grow up CeCe! I love a sculptural piece of furniture that doubles as art! 😍
She’s got her system down, sounds like a wonderful way to hunt and gather 😍
I was watching the video and nodding my head 😁. I have been playing musical chairs with my furniture ever since my son was born. I also got rid of my coffee table, sisal rug, glass furniture and have almost no decor on my (very few) surfaces. But it's ok. I'm embracing this season and the fact the house represents that.
Great video, as usual 😘
We (had) the same style then Apricia! Out with the old 🙌🏻☺️
The last time I moved, I purged so much home decor. Most of it was trendy stuff, that was no longer trending lol. I think it is better to have a few quality pieces that you love, and as you say, have meaning.
Exactly Merry. I love a good trend myself, but find that I keep the vintage pieces the most from move to move 👍🏻☺️
