Holy smokes, you have a toddler and a full time job and- I can't believe the amount of content you consistently put out. You are definitely an inspiration. Plus, how do you get over 200 views in less than an hour when you put out a new video? Crazy! And a little reminder- give Plague Birds by Jason Sanford a try, you won't be disappointed :)
Oh thank you... I get pretty obsessive about making time for my hobbies. And I have Plague Birds on hold at my library!
My God, you're a machine! To have so many obligations-spouse, child, full-time job, and booktuber channel, and STILL fit in the time to read hundreds of books a year is beyond impressive! Thanks for posting a video that gives a glimpse 'behind the scenes' and reveals the depth of your passion for reading.📖⏳️🤯
Glad you enjoyed the video. And yeah I'm obsessive so I somehow get it all done
Thank you for advocating DNFing books when you are not in the mood for them! For me reading is fully enjoyment based so I see no reason to force myself to keep reading something I am not enjoying. And I feel like it gives the books another shot, I’ll put a book down because it’s not right for the moment and might come back months later and absolutely love it because I read it in the right mood. Thanks for the wonderful video!
Yes this is the way to do it! I wish more people DNFd books
Since 2016 I've been reading books as a hobby. That year I read 77 books total. Now at this time in 2022 I have read overall a total of 336 books. Seriously. But I do have life. I just only read on my day off when I'm not working. Normally, I read at Tea places to interact with people. Same when I travel I always take a book. There are benefits in reading books, improving your memory and vocabulary. Decrease your chances in dementia, reduces stress and comprehension. Because I have a learning disorder I do this to be better myself. Each book I read I continue to improve
That's fantastic... and yes I really hope my own reading habits will keep me sharp & healthy
I set a goal for 30 books, so I've been taking a systematic approach to reading. I try to read a certain percentage each day, butttt I think this kinda takes the joy out of reading and turns it into a chore. "200-300 books...decent amount" Lol, I thought I was doing something with 30 hahaha. Love your channel, reviews, all of it! Your channel single handedly got me out of my reading slump. Thanks!!!
30 is good too! Most adults don't read any books in books in a year
In 2023 I read 122 books which is a lot for me. I'm 36. Married and mom to a 5 yo kid who is in school only 3 hours a day. I can read that much because my kid luckily goes to bed early, by 8pm she's in bed. It might not be early for you, guys, but we're Italians, living in Italy and here kids go to bed around 10.30 pm, sometimes even later. So I'm able to read from 9 pm. And in the morning I get up at 6 so I have another 30 minutes to read. If my kid plays independently during the day I can read something but with tons of distractions. I'm an introvert as well. I don't have friends by choice and I see my parents and siblings on the weekends... Your voice is so calming.. that's the first video of yours that I see... Happy to get some inspiration from you.. sorry for my English mistakes... Have a nice day.
(I don't listen to audiobooks, i only read physical books or ebooks on my phone. I haven't watched a movie or a tv show for 5 years, so, more time to read. We own a tv and i watch it with catoons in the afternoon and normally while she watches her cartoons I cook or I read).
Sounds like we have some similarities in our reading lives. I enjoyed reading how you fit reading into your mom life
This was such a good video! Lots of helpful tips😊My reading habits are all over the place right now😐
That's awesome and congrats on your reading (and filming too). I read during lunch at work too and late at night if I can't sleep.
Thanks... and yeah that was me last night
I really enjoyed this video! Love the channel and how personable you are.
Oh thank you
Love this video! I’ve finally gotten more into a reading routine this year after neglecting it for most of my adulthood. Trying audiobooks has really helped! Though I find that I can only read more “simple” books on audio as I have a hard time processing them sometimes.
I mostly read one ebook and one audio at a time, but sometimes I’ll read one nonfiction and one fiction ebook at the same time as I love nonfiction but find that I have to be in a certain mood for it, and it’s a lot easier for me to take long breaks from nonfiction than fiction. In the past it’s taken me so long to finish a book that I forget what happened in the beginning, so I’m trying not to do that anymore.
I’ve read 57 books so far this year, which is the most I’ve ever read! And I still take time for my other hobbies like roller skating. My husband is also a huge gamer so I mostly read while he is playing, and then audio when I’m driving or doing chores. I hope I can speed up my reading more, I wish I was as fast as you! I also have a hard time DNFing books, but mostly because I really enjoy writing reviews for books I don’t like 🤣
Love hearing about your own reading routine and I LOVE your motivation for finishing bad books 🤣
I love that you find the time to read despite having a hubby and a toddler who need your time to. Shows true passion for books :) I always read in queues and waiting rooms. I do read in the car via audio books, it's probably the way I personally read the most books!!
Glad that you read in waiting room. I have gotten so many books finished in waiting rooms
Yep the same here. Any free moment I can find I’m reading a book and I get through so many books!
Yes! That's the way to do it!
📚 New viewer here! “Stabby books” cracks me up. I enjoy your content even though I don’t read fantasy and horror. And kudos to you for the reading and filming you do while married, mothering, and doing full time outside work. Wow.
Oh thank you! And yes I think I'm a little obsessed in order to fit in so much reading 😄
if you ask me, you have a better life than several people I know.
I have no idea who decided that this lifestyle means "having no life"
We are very similar in the way we handle our days (except you have a kid, I have dogs), we just prioritise our passions.
Don't get why this is so hard to accept or believe.
Thanks for this video 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🌼🌼🌼
Oh thank you... I like how tough frame things
Great video Rachael. I totally agree about the DNF ing . There are too many good books out there for you to struggle through something that’s just not clicking for you. Thank you for all your great videos
Yes... exactly!
I don't read nearly as many books a year as you do, but I decided to actively increase that number by making reading a priority. I always have a book ready and I "force" myself to read before engaging in any other way of entertainment (it sounds bad, but on the contrary, it helped me go back to my favorite hobby). Also, I read much faster on my Kindle so consuming lots of ebooks has helped me read more as well.
Yes I get that. Sometimes I tell myself I need to X number of chapters before I watch TV
A lot of great advice! Thank you!
Loved this video, Rachel! 🖤
You touched on so many good points.
And you KNOW I'm a fan of DNFing books! 🙆🏾♀️
I love what you said about making excuses to do anything other than reading being a sign that it's time to DNF that book. Yessss! I could probably DNF even more by that reasoning.
And I'm a mom too. My daughter is a young adult but I still have to set aside time with her to still be involved in her life. I think it's always a balancing act when you live with family who want some of your time. 😁
Would love a follow-up DNF video!
As always, love your content! 📚
Aw thanks Nakia... so happy you share my dnfing philosophy. And love to hear about how you balance reading with a young adult
I really love all this insight!! Reader + Gamer is truly couple goals. I, comparatively, am a slow reader - usually 60 pages/ hour and cannot put my audiobooks above 1.2 speed, but I’ve accepted that 😂 Definitely agree on the DNF, there are way too many books out there for me to suffer through books I don’t like!
So happy that you share my philosophy about dnfing books!
Back when I worked at a library, allistics would ask me how I completed the book a day challenge several years in a row.
Well, hate to break it to them but I’m autistic and books are one of my hyperfixations.
That's awesome!
You hit the nail on the head with the 'choose reading' thing. My go-to activity is gaming and it's a huge time sink. It's also just an easier thing to do so my lazy brain gravitates to it. When I actually think about it though, reading is such a better way to spend your time. There are some great games out there but a great book is the best thing ever. I'm going to try and choose reading more 👍
Yeah nothing wrong with gaming. My husband gets so much enjoyment from it. And I enjoy some games too. I just the most enjoyment from reading so I prioritize it
I'm really fortunate in that I'm retired so can read pretty much whenever I want. I tend to keep to afternoons and part of the evenings though as I do have other stuff going on including a large garden. I found your comment about your reading having speeded up spot-on. At one time I thought it was good if I managed 50 books in a year. Now I'm managing over 90 but nothing has changed so I must have sped up. Partly I think that's due to buying a Kindle Fire 10, I love the page reproduction on it and find I read very quickly using it. Enjoy your channel, my main interest is your science fiction recommendations but I also love your 'stabby book' reviews!
Oh thank you! And so happy you get so much reading done during your retirement years
😮Your reading speed in numbers is eye opening! I’m older than you, been reading all my life from a young age, but I seem to have a set reading pace, and I read roughly the same number of books each year now that I’ve been tracking it on GR since 2009. So 100pages in an hour blew my tiny little brain 🤯 😆 I don’t do audio books - I clean, cook and garden to podcasts instead - but I’ve heard the ~2x speed thing quite a bit, though I’ve yet to try it even on podcasts, which I’ve been consuming since 2006. The DNF thing was also highly interesting, because I recognise the symptoms you describe, but very rarely do I DNF - it has to be really, really bad for me to get to that point. I even only have maybe a handful of books I can recall truly disliking off the top of my head (and I still own the majority of them in my Library - I gave one away in utter disgust once!). Great episode. Thank you for the insight behind the scenes.
Thanks... I'm lucky to be a quick reader and yes doing audiobooks help but your time is well spent if you enjoy those podcasts
Hi Rachel, this was really fun to watch. I love your channel and your content and truly admire how much you read and how you are able to analyze all the books you present on your channel. Despite having a young family and job, etc., it truly amazes me that you can read 200 to 300 books per year! I have never counted how many books I read each year, but I actually started this year, in January 2024. I'll see how that goes, LOL. Happy reading and have a great weekend! 📚📚
Thanks! I wish you best luck with your 2024 reading
@@TheShadesofOrange Thank you!!
This had a lot of good advice. Thanks!
📚 Thanks for sharing. Always interesting hearing about people's reading habits. I also always have a physical and an audio on the go, usually in two different genres. I'm usually 1.5 speed, I find that's my happy place. All for DNFing a book that's just not doing it for me 🤪📚
Love hearing your habits... we sound pretty similar!
Mam, I salute you for doing so much reading even after being a mom and having a job. I think I should learn from you to value time. Also I love your book recommendations.
Thanks!
This is such a dream lol. I get the "I'm not winning" disclaimer but let's be honest this sounds like an amazing way to live your life haha
I often find myself just being too tired to read lately, especially when finishing off my thesis, but hopefully this weekend i can gradually get back into it ☺
Aw definitely not trying to sound like I'm bragging
I have a follow up question: in reading so many books, do you feel you are retaining them in memory? For example, looking back say 2 years ago, do you feel you can recall most of what you read or does it slowly fade away? Love your channel. thanks!
Good question... and honestly the mediocre ones fade from my memory, but I have really good memory of the ones that become favourites
very insightful, as always
Great tips :) I always struggle to DNF... I keep expecting things to get better eventually, especially if it's part of a series I have enjoyed previous books from. I'm atm giving some time off a book, to see if I can come back to it with more interest.
Yeah I always push people to let mediocre books go
I’m halfway through a book called We Had to Remove This Post by Hanna Bervoets and all I keep thinking is “Rachel would love this!” It might have a crappy second half but based on the first half and the general premise of the story I’d recommend you have a look at it!
OK well if you thought of me then I will definitely try to track this one down
I do that as well! one physical & one audio.. I have a 5 year old so it's just easier to listen during day & then I'll read another slowly at night on kindle usually etc dnf'in ones you're not enjoying is important, too many good books to get through to waste on that! thanks for sharing
Sounds like we have similar routines!
I have to say I really appreciate the fact that you take time for yourself even when having a spouse and a toddler/child. I also don’t think that you’re a have a controversial parenting style because I would be doing the exact same thing that you do. This is why I enjoy watching your channel so much. Audiobooks have become my life and I find myself unable to fall asleep unless I have an audiobook on with a 15 minute timer. I also listen at 1.75 speed because I can’t stand how slow narrators can be. I am on a computer all day so ebooks and even regular books have become hard on my eyes. Buddy reading is something I can’t do. I have guilt that I would be slow or too fast. Thanks for this video!
I agree, I have a hard time with buddy reading too. I also feel guilty if I dislike the book when my buddy liked it.
Yeah I dnf my buddy reads ALL the time... I just warn people ahead of time
I agree with everything you said and your reading routine sounds very similar to mine!
Cool that we have similar routines!
You sound just like me! I am the same. During the summer when I don't have to get up to get my 7 year old to school, I will sit in bed and read for a half hour to an hour. Plus my 3 year old also still takes a nap so I will read during naptime and after they go to bed. Me and my husband have a agreement where after the kids go to bed, we get an hour to ourselves and an hour with each other. When I worked I also read during lunch. I will only read audiobooks during long drives. You definitely read A LOT faster than me! I read constantly but still only manage to read 80 or 90 books a year. My husband always points out that reading one book at a time is more efficient 😂 he also helps me get better at DFNing books. Usually I feel the need to at least keep skimming until the end but I have been getting better! Great video!
Oooh I love how similar our routines are! And yeah DNFing is huge
Congratulations on how many books you’ve been able to read in a year! Last year I only managed 26. My goal this year is 34 and I’m currently on my 24th one. I’ve been wanting to read larger books this year too or at least one. I’ve been thinking about buying Ordinary Monsters by J.M Miro but I’ve heard it lull’s in quite a few places plus I was undecided between reading a book placed in the 1800’s or one where the characters have powers or a monster book. Then I decided to go with a monster book. I have a super difficult time dnf’ing books. I usually just struggle through them. Hahaha.
I'll be reviewing Ordinary Monsters next week, it's definitely a slower, chunky book so I don't know how you'll get along with it
I always find it interesting to learn how other people read the amount of books that they do. Thank you for sharing! My reading routine is to try to read about 100 pages a day and read whenever I have a free moment. I have really gotten into audiobooks in the last few years which is helpful when I'm driving, doing tasks around the house or doing some gaming with my speed ranging from 1.75 to 2.25, sometimes a little faster depending on the narrator and story. I typically read between 100 and 200 books a year.
Love hearing your reading routine. We actually sound pretty similar
@@TheShadesofOrange Thank you! I think we are :D . Though I have a habit of trying to read multiple books at once lol. Last year I read 268 books and it would be awesome if I can manage to make it to 300 or at least beat my record of last year. I just love reading :D
I worked in public libraries for almost 40 years and I can assure you that the staff at your local library LOVES users/patrons/customers such as you! Librarians spend quite a few hours a week reviewing/ordering/processing new materials and they so enjoy when the public makes suggestions and requests titles via interlibrary loan. As a fellow book lover I salute you for your energy and determination to find the next "good book to read." Warm regards from N.E, Ohio, USA,
Oh thanks! I always feel self conscious as a mega user
@@TheShadesofOrange Don't give it a second thought! I assure you that we librarians so totally enjoy book lovers such as yourself. And thanks again for all your wonderful content!!!
What you said about DNF books really made sense. I'm battling that now. I was on a great reading streak, had read The Mountain in the Sea, Perdido Street Station, The First Dresden Files and Roadside Picnic just recently, and I thought they were all great and really different. I was like the hits keep on coming. Now I am on The Rook, and it is not working for me. It was a little out of my normal picks too but thought change it up. I find myself procrastinating like you said. I'm here on BookTube scrolling, any excuse not to read. This happened to me before and did DNF eventually but it takes me so long to do that, meanwhile I have lost days when I could have been reading something-else. I am half way through the The Rook and battling the sunk cost mindset. My mind says I should finish it cause: A I bought it, B I want to know the conclusion, but I should probably just drop the book.
Yes! I'm so glad you relate to how I feel about DNFing... I definitely support you dropping the Rook if it's not inspiring you to read
I thought I was bad reading around 200 books a year!!! 😂 Now being retired, now I read a lot more. I try to set aside time to read in especially in the morning and evening. Maybe some time in the afternoon. But now since we are in rerun season TV, I take advantage of reading. Sitting outside and I have a book going. It's a disease I don't want the cure for!!! 😂
Oh I love reading outside. Hoping to do more this year
Once I added audio books to my reading I started out at 1 speed as well. But since I actually enjoy listening to the audio book while reading the written book I found myself naturally increasing the audio speed to keep up with my reading speed. I've settled in listening to audio books somewhere from 1.8 to 2 speed now as it's much more natural pace that matches my reading.
Yes exactly. I originally thought 1.25 speed was CRAZY and now I rarely listen to anything under 2.0
Last year was the first year I kept track of how many books I was reading and it came in at 207. I'm a little over one hundred for this year so far. I always do a mix of physical books, ebooks and audio books depending on my mood and availability, and I usually read several at a time but I've always chalked that up to my ADHD.
That's very impressive
I also wanted to comment on personal experience. For example, when I’m not reading anything in particular, the time I spend on the cellphone is preposterous, 6 or more per day easily. But when I’m really into a book, that falls to less than two hours a day. So my free time is always there. It’s a matter of applying it.
I’ve always felt weird about audiobooks. I keep meaning to try it, but I do feel like it can’t possibly be the same experience.
Love reading how reading experience changes your cell phone habits
@@TheShadesofOrange cellphone habits, social interactions, work routine, diet, personal hygiene… a good book might turn me into a grumpy hermit
Yes to all of this! Big fan of DNF’ing books (even 80% through). I steadfastly refuse to read a book I don’t enjoy. Also a fan an of audio books. My reading speed for comprehension is slow so I don’t get through a ton of books but I do enjoy what I read! 😊❤️
Sounds like we have very similar reading philosophies!
This is either going to be a huge comment or several.
First of all, love the channel. I’m kind of hooked.
I’d like to make two suggestions of books about books/reading:
- Ex-Libris, by Anne Fadiman is a collection of short episodes from her life as a young wife, mother and bibliophile. It’s lovely and you are going to see yourself, I think.
- Reads like a Novel, by Daniel Pennac, is a treatise about acquiring the reading habit. It has a great chapter on a child learning to write ‘mother’. Another one about finding the time to read.
He talks of reading as a choice. How a mother with a job, kids, errands and everything finds time to read, and some wealthy young playboy living on inheritance can’t find the time. It’s about personality, about giving yourself the pleasure of being a reader.
Both are very short books, and I have gone back to them many times. Highly recommended.
Thanks for your recs!!
Dear Rachel. Thank you for your videos. They are great! Have you ever considered making a video about horror fiction from other non-English speaking countries? I think that it would be interesting, and Valancourt is translating great foreign books right now.
Oh yes I've recommended a lot of translated work but not necessarily collected in one video
Wow a mom and full time job. Amazing lady. Oh and thank you for DNF tip , it makes so much sense not wasting time
Oh thanks! And yes DNFing is key
I only read one book at a time, im glad you do too. I also Dnf books as I feel if it's not interesting dont read it. Another great video. 😊
Love your reading habits
I usually do hybrid audio books with physical/e books.
Why did I think you were a stay at home mom? Lol....You have really made me say to myself girl get through that tbr!!!!😅 I am single with no children and a introvert as well but I barely get to 100 books a year lol...Thank you for sharing this was wonderful!👌🏽💕
I'm sure you round out your life with other interests that I don't share. And nope always been a working mom. I think a lot booktube moms stay at home though
Wow Rachel I am retired and can read pretty much as much as I want and I don't read much more than 125 books in a year. Good on you! I don't know how you do it!
That's OK... I suspect you have different areas in your life that I don't have
I manage to read a lot by listening to all my audiobooks at 3x speed 😂 📕🚘
Yeah I'm more frequently creeping up to the faster speed
I have such a hard time DNFing books and I think that's a) the completionist in me and b) I always have some sort of faith that the story will get better or be worth it at the end. However, it's easier for me if I determine from the very beginning that I'm not really feeling it, and that's when I can DNF with no problem.
Maybe once a year I'll get part of the way in and admit to myself that I'm not enjoying it, and put it down. But it'll bother me in doing so, lol
One thing that you and I have in common is that I can only read one book at a time. Even though there are hundreds and hundreds of books that I want to read, and asap, I feel that going back and forth between other books just takes time away from the story I'm investing in. I often immerse myself in bigger books, so I don't want to dilute the experience by reading something else simultaneously
Yeah I really believe that juggling multiple books reduces the enjoyment of reading them all. And yes often I will "dnf" a book by simply putting it down after a few pages
From May to December I read 120 books in the first year of Covid. Never bothered counting before or after that. Was just curious at the time. Number of books probably varies greatly. For June I’ve been reading a book a day. This coming Mon-Fri I’ll be lucky to read 1 or 2 (long work days, no breaks, any reading time is for reading instructional material).
Reading is my me-time activity too. I have to force myself to put my book down and get outside to ride my bike for exercise for a couple of hours. Also have to force myself to do various computer oriented tasks too instead of reading. I love cycling and like playing with computer and tech and programs, but I just like reading so much more.
Sounds like we have very similar feelings about reading. I really do enjoy games and TV, but I usually choose reading because I just get so much more enjoyment from it.
Thankyou xx
😊 Inspiring!
Don’t feel bad about disliking TV. It’s perfectly valid to feel that way. There are many people out there that feel the same 😅
And, You answered the question I was wondering about, reading multiple books at a time. I started down that road back in high school. These days I read no more than four at a time, and one of those is always an audiobook that I can listen to during yoga 🥳
I don't dislike TV, I'm just very selective what I watch so I usually choose books over TV I find to be mediocre
@@TheShadesofOrange sorry for misunderstanding 🙂
Interesting tips. I only manage to get thru about 50 books a year. Some days when I get home from work I’m so tired and if I read whilst tired I don’t remember what I read. Another problem I have is I think it’s called sub-vocalization in my head when reading and I don’t know how to drop that habit and I know it slows me down. Gotta work on that. I agree about the DNF part though. Life’s too short for bad books!
Oh that's interesting about Sub-Vocalization. Yeah I assume I must not, but it probably helps with focus, I imagine
I usually read about 200 books a year and my habits are similar to yours. (I'm purposely trying to read less this year, but I've still read 85 book so far.) A few minutes here and there really do add up. I usually have an ebook and an audiobook that I'm reading and they are usually different genres. I rarely read physical books anymore, but it does occasionally happen. I also DNF books. I recent DNF'd one after 5 pages. LOL I read an average of a page a minute, so I'm not a real fast reader. My daughter is really fast, but she's the type that reads several lines at a time. She's not speed reading. That's just her reading method and what she's always done it.
I always say you make time for (and spend your money on) what's important to you. I remember talking to somebody years ago about hobbies. I mentioned what mine were and she said, "wow! you're expensive!". No, that's just how I chose to spend my money. This person had a beautifully decorated house and frequently bought new clothes. I don't do those things. The same goes with reading. I absolutely love it and it's how I choose to spend my time. Other people may not choose to use their time the same way. It's all good.
Okay. I got a little carried away with my comment. :)
Oh we sound very similar... and do not apologize for a longer thoughtful comment. I completely agree in investing our money in the hobbies and activities that bring happiness. I'd rather have a simple clothes and house decor and spend that money on something like reading that honestly brings me so much daily happiness
I have two children, a 5 year old and a 1 year old. I tend to read about 200 books a year, but most are in audio format as i can go around the house, wash, clean and play with the kids at the same time. I only read paper books after the kids are going to bed, but usually i am so tired that i don't get to read that much in the evenings :)
Ah yes nice to hear from another parent taking advantage of audiobook time when the kids are awake
I could only wish!
I definitely wish I was better about DNFing books but it's just so difficult for me! Luckily, I usually get in a worse reading slump from reading a new favorite book than a book I didn't like. Thinking about being done with a book forever motivates me to get through them lol
Lol that's funny!
I deliberately go to work almost an hour early (my usual shifts start at 10am) just so i can read lol. I've got older "kids" (22, 19, and 16) at home, they still like to "hang out" with us when they're home, (a very good thing!), and it's a small house so I don't really have a quiet reading spot when people are home (except the bath tub...I am a vocal supporter of reading in the tub!)
I love hearing about your routine. And I've always been of scared of dropping books in the bathtub
Meanwhile, I am struggling to achieve my 30-50 book goal 🤭😝 you are a reading machine Rachel 😉💙
Thanks... and reading any books is still better than the average person. My husband reads a book every 3 or 4 years
@@TheShadesofOrange haha......thank you for inspiring us to read 🤗
And I had the same experience as you with audiobooks. I thought I was doing well at 1.25x. A few months later it was 1.5. Now it’s 2.0, or 1.8 if I want to savour the books (Eg The Expanse series).
Yeah I originally thought 1.25 was crazy fast and then my brain got faster at processing the information and now I find it too slow
I used to only read books with my eyeballs and I thought I read a lot. Then I started listening to audiobooks and my reading really increased. I actually found that, personally, audiobooks work MUCH better for me than physically reading a book. IDK if I have undiagnosed ADHD or something, but I have found that, in order for me to better comprehend something, I'm the kind of person who has to be doing something with my hands at the same time. Like in classes at school, it was always easier for me to understand what the teacher was lecturing about if I was doodling on a page or something. So being able to listen to an audiobook while I play some kind of mindless game on my laptop (a game that doesn't require much brainpower and is more just keeping my hands busy), I can actually listen at a high speed and still comprehend what's going on. I also don't get bored reading while doing this. When I used to read physical books, I could only read for 30mins or so before I felt like I was getting antsy. Now I can just listen to an audiobook for HOURS, and I'm fine.
It sounds like your an auditory learner (I am too). I always hate the assumption that people who listen to audiobooks don't retain the story but I often get the best retention
I can spend quite a bit of time reading every day but don't get through as many books per year so as I was listening to your video I kept telling myself that despite your reading habits you just had to be a fast reader. And then you confirmed that by basically stating you read over 100 pages in an hour. That is crazy fast. Also having the audio at 2x speed obviously helps. I rarely speed up the audio. I sometimes put it at 1.2 if the narrator is especially slow. Higher than that I find they sound like chipmunks. Plus, I don't think my brain could process the content at such fast speeds 🤣 I find my reading speed varies based on the type of book or where I'm at in the book. Non-fiction will typically be slower for example, and thrillers are usually the quickest. I find I get through the second half of a book much more quickly as I'm then familiar with the characters. If there are a lot of characters, in the early parts of the book I find myself going back to check on some of them. Also, if there's something on my mind or there's too much noise, I tend to lose my focus. Does any of this affect your reading speed?
Yeah I'm lucky to be a quicker reader. With audiobooks, it really just takes practice to normalize the faster speeds in your brain. I use to find 1.25 super fast but now I find it so slow. It's interesting how the brain adapts with repetition.
Oh and I forgot to respond... yes if I'm distracted or in a loud environment... the audio definitely slows down ... or sometimes just turns off
@@TheShadesofOrange Yes, I was thinking it's probably something that the brain gradually gets used to :)
Have you tried the car sickness glasses , i have heard wonderful things
I also to physical books and audiobooks at the same time
Agreed on the one book at a time deal.
What type of music do you listen to?
Any classical?
Oh my music tastes are terrible. Like Justin Bieber bad
Hey R: You seem to be very DISCIPLINED w your time. I found that this is even more important than AMOUNT of time. For example, when I was out-of-work I naturally had a lot of time on my hands, but I was also feeling depressed and wasn't using my time well. Glad to know that you are also a music-lover. Honestly I would have to say that music comes first for me, with reading a close second. Movies/TV are in third place. Loving your channel - as I said before. Later. 😀
Thank you! And yes I tend to treat reading like a second job. 😄and I suspect you have better taste in music in music than me (a lot of pop & country music in my playlists).
@@TheShadesofOrange I'm not into really country (except for Johnny Cash and a few others) but i like a lot of pop music. My favorite genres are classic rock, alternative, goth, psychedlic, glam, power pop, some punk. (This is in addition to the classical orchestral and some opera.) I stopped counting my CDs at around 2,500 🙃.
BTW, I am glad to hear you make use of your local library. I am a library lover as well. Have been since my mom brought me there when i was very young. I always thought of it as a magical place. 🙂
@@NaughtyVampireGod yes I love the library. I go there every week. I think they are such valuable resources in communities
I usually read 250 to 350 books a year, in my case I can get in a few hours of an audiobook on most work days and I live alone so I have a lot of time to read. I usually have a total of five books going; a fiction, a nonfiction, and either poetry or short stories in print and a fiction and nonfiction on audio. Usually one will take priority depending on my mood but I'm also quick to dnf. Being a romance reader also really helps get through books as most read pretty quickly and the authors are pretty prolific, which isn't always the case for the Sci-fi authors I love.
Oh yes that's a good point about genre... I know romance tends to be shorter and often written to be bingeable so romance readers often read a ton of books each year
If it's a library book, I can DNF much easier than books I've spent my money on. That's just like throwing $15-30 out the window, I just can't lol. My reading cart also helps. I love loading it up and get motivated to finish a shelf so I can restock it again. I'm living my librarian dream vicariously through my cart! A book journal also helps me to set up challenges. I love ticking stuff off a list. I have multiple challenges every year and usually beat all of them.
That makes sense! And yeah that's why I actually buy most of my books after I have already read them
Since book tube I have been reading more books I used to read 1-2books a month but I never tried audiobooks I always listened to podcast on the road now I'm listening to audiobooks
Yeah and I almost never listen to podcast so I know I'm missing out
I just found your channel and liked what I saw. My booktube obsession has grown again! Quick question: Doesn't listening to audiobooks at 2x speed put you off with the voice distortion? I've tried 1.2x and even that sounded artificial and frankly weird.
You would think so and I use to think it sounded strange sped up but it's amazing how my brain adapted. Now normal speed feels sooooo slow and almost distorted
I read 90 books last year, an all time high for me!
That's fantastic!
I’m in reading slump for almost 19 months now, what do you suggest 😫? I wish I could read like you. Loved this video❤
That's tough. I'd mostly recommend being kind to yourself and not pushing yourself to finish books you aren't loving
This is great...I was wondering how you could do it. Nice point about DNF ing. I listen to audiobooks only if writing style is simpler, otherwise I feel I'm missing to much of enjoyment. 👠💠🔷️👡
Yes DNFing really does make a difference
Do you ever re-read a book? I'll do that for important (to me) books. Do you forget endings? I often forget endings unless they're dramatic. Does thinking about a book after you've finished it slow you down? i usually think about what I've read and I'll think "Wait, a minute! How did she know to check the car trunk?" and I'll be tempted to go back.
I love audiobooks, but I prefer text. I find a lot of interesting scenes and dialogue that would otherwise stay with me for years if I read them, leave no impression if I listen to them. I listened to Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light, which I had read and loved years back, but when I listened to it, I missed a dozen favorite moments. Sometimes, though, the audiobook is a better choice.
Oh yes I'm a huge rereader. I feel that I read enough to be able to revisit favourites while still reading enough content for the channel. I often physically read books and then reread on audio
@@TheShadesofOrange Ah, I should do that (listening the second time) - it would jog my memory too!👍
I noticed you have a copy of The War of the Worlds behind you on your shelf. Have you heard of the sequel book written by Stephen Baxter (It was supported by the H.G. Wells Estate)? It's called "The Massacre of Mankind". I've only just started reading it. I try to get through at least 36 books a year (or about three a month).
I didn't realize there was a sequel... I will definitely have to look that up
📚📚📚
very nice
📚🚗🐕I would really enjoy a DNF video.
I'll try to film one soon!
Whatever you are so pretty 🖤
Right now I alternate between 2 books and a short story book. I plan on getting down to 1 book and 1 short story book. I really don’t listen to audiobooks either.
That's a nice controlled way to do it
📚
very good
Interesting video....🙂
Hi. What kind of camera do you use?
A Canon DSLR
would you give up reading forever if your child's life depended on it? what would you do instead?
Oh 100%. But I feel a less productive/healthy might replace it
A true 💎 of booktube 🤍
What percent each year is audiobooks?
Maybe 30%?
i can’t ignore him all the time (husband)😂😂😂
Haha he watched this video and laughed
I am going to be soft DNFing a book. Not hating it but not in the mood for it. I've been forcing myself to read it because I'm intrigue to see what happens but I need something faster paced or I might just focus on audiobooks for the remainder of the month.
Sometimes audiobooks and graphic novels/manga help me get through slumps.
I do some of the same stuff that you do. I read at lunch a lot. I basically read in all my free time. I'm currently in school full time, doing a 18 hour a week internship and working 40 hours. Audiobooks have been saving me but I've still read a fair few physical books too.
I don't really love fantasy/sci fi audiobooks which is disappointing. I usually have one physical SFF book going and an audiobook during down time at work or during the times I'm too anxious to read.
Sounds like we have similar reading ha its and I applaud you for soft dnfing that book. I put book aside and sometimes come back to them later when I'm in a different mood
Do you also play video games? I thought I heard you say you play them with your husband. I love reading and also playing video games and that seems to be my biggest struggle. The games sometimes pull me away from my book lol. Also about how many pages per hour can you read?
I play some games, but I pair that time as hang out /date time with my husband (when I wouldn't be reading anyway) so it doesn't directly compete with reading time since I rarely game in my solo time
Your husband must really like you. Kidding aside, i used to get through a book in 3 days. Struggling atm cos of mental health issues. It's amazing how you get through so many. Unlike most men i love reading.
Yeah my husband laughed when he watched this video. But I'm so sorry you're struggling at the moment. I hope things improve and you find books that support your mental health
@@TheShadesofOrange thanks . Hopefully I'll get better soon.
🔥🔥
You remind me so of that old Twilight Zone episode with Burgess Meredith as the insatiable bookworm only you have a more understanding spouse and hopefully there won't be a nuke war to give you more time to read.
And hopefully, her glasses remain intact. 👓😄
Haha I may have to look up that episode
English is my second language (I learned it in school and didn’t meet anyone speaks the language until college) , I listen to English audiobooks in 1.25x-1.5x speed. I actually watched all RUclips videos on 1.5x-2x speed but never wanted to mention it because I feel some people may take that as offenses. To me listening audiobooks are faster than reading by my eyes, because no matter how much I tried, my eye-reading speed for English is roughly equal to 0.8x-1.0x playing speed in audiobooks. It really annoys me how slow I read when it’s English. I tend to read the fastest on long subway rides (30-80 minutes), sometimes missed my stop as a result lol.
I will never be offended if you Speed me up haha
