This is EXACTLY what every guide should be like. No random introductions, no bullshit filler, just exactly what we want to know. Thank you good sir! Edit: I had absolutely no problems parrying rellana or consort radahn on my first playthrough, but Messmer I looked this video up for. I still can't manage, and I've beaten every FS game at base level before, including parry only runs. Man, is he hard to parry with all the flames blocking the view!
Thanks! Parrying this boss is really unnatural compared to the others as you have mentioned. Probably because he wields his weapon in his left arm and is a bit edgy. But if you are dead-set on doing it, you should first try to get the timing for his two fire-scatter attacks. They are by far the most often and worth parrying. After you got those nailed, the others should come easier.
@@bananacorn4375 thanks man, I did it yesterday. My goal for parry only runs is to do no damage aside from on the riposte. I basically just dodged everything and parried only the lunge attack and the one after the fire swipe. I just finished midra parry only no damage RL1 an hour ago. That's a great fight too that's super easy to parry but more difficult to dodge (for me at least, and at rl1).
@@bananacorn4375I feel like positioning is much more necessary for parrying Messmer. Lots of times I timed my parry correctly but missed it regardless due to unfortunate positioning. Him being left-handed definitely plays a part too. Really finnicky boss to parry that’s for sure.
@@Alenbh4g you would honestly get more value of strafing him to your left for the stab attacks and get some hits off. In my opinion, Messmer is the opposite of Consort Radahn. Messmer is a great boss with parries as a byproduct -added just because they had to, Radahn(at least pre-nerf) was an awful boss(by Elden Ring standard), but his parries are arguable the best in the entire souls series.
@@bananacorn4375 Oh you’re definitely right. I just wanted to try something new on my dagger build (I used dagger parries on Malenia and Rellana, so I wanted to try them out on him). It obviously wasn’t as good as fighting him normally, not by a long shot, but it was definitely satisfying and some good fun. Think I’m going to start incorporating parries into all my fights with him to shake things up.
Just wanted to let you know that I just beat Messmer with parry only (plus single punish slashes on parries with no riposte)! Your guide is awesome, my guy! Thank you!
Ive commented before, but just want to say im making good progress doing this hitless on my rl1 ng+ character. On my ng run i didnt bother parrying, but i wasnt satisfied so i went into ng+. The quick double swipe that you parry at 2:20 i can never pull off. I can dodge it (almost) consistently, but the parry doesnt seem to work for some reason Edit: so that double swipe actually has TWO variations, one is parryable one is not. The difference is absolutely subtle and you have to have korean reflexes to time it right, and it's one of the few moves in all of FS games that i can't stand. They both come out super fast, and if try to parry the one you have to dodge you get hit. If you wait a split second, literally 0.1 seconds, longer, you get hit. This is one of maybe 3 moves in the entire FS catalogue id label as unfair. The tales are too similar for such a different attack (parryable vs not). The others i cant think off the top of my head, but one for sure is melanias quick sword swipe that she does. Basically a dounle slash that comes out too quickly. Not the waterfowl dance, that move is fair with the exception of doing a jumping attack and landing under her when she starts it. Then, no matter what you dont have the frames to avoid the first flurry.
That’s crazy. Messmer must be the only parryable boss that isn’t worth to fight in a parry-focused manner. Also is solids as if you like to torture yourself. You should definitely start making RUclips videos!
@@bananacorn4375 I've been told that before hahah.. But doing hitless, base level and parry only is a whole other beast
Exactly what i was looking for. I've beaten him allready, sadly and i only was able to reliably parry one move and another one sparsly. So it's mostly follow up and secondary attacks that can be parried. Neat

I would argue that this boss is not worth parrying tbh. His health is not that high and his second phase begins and stays at 50% and THREE parry to stun. Even if you DO down him that's only a punish worth of damage😅
Partially true. Some of the attacks are worth more strafing than parrying. Parrying him is unnecessary risk, but the reward is that you can hit him after each parry+riposte after 3. I would definitely not parry him in a no-hit run, but for a no-hit boss challenge, I would parry him whenever I can in first phase.
What I do for this is give a slash after each of the first two parries, as slashes when no ripostes are possible are very disrespectful to the bosses 😂 1) Parry - Yell "DISRESPECT" + Slash 2) PARRY - Yell "DISRESPECT" + Slash 3) PARRY - RIPOSTE while yelling "GIMMIE!" Repeat until dead. Still is parry only in my eyes.
In this boss, parrying is a bit weird as he always moves around and it’s hard to detect when to parry during the combos. But the attack you will parry the most is the follow-up to the fire scatter, so think of it as a bonus. For bosses like Crucible Knight, Romania, or Commander Niall, you only need 1 parry so it’s very rewarding. For Margit(not Morgott) you can stunlock him with parties, as he will always follow-up being parried with another parryable attack. I also really like Midra because parrying him feels very natural and aggressive. Even though he also needs 3 parries, you can be always be aggressive on him and not wait for specific attacks to parry. You can constantly spam r1 and when he tries to attack, you just say „it’s not your turn yet“, parry him and continue attacking.
True. I think bosses like Malenia & Messmer should have 2 parries like Margit/Margott. They have a lot of parry chances since they slashes a lot. It feels less rewarding when you need to invest so much in order to get a stance break.
