The idiot style of Teddy Boy actually started about 1969 with the first so called R'n'R Revival and they were basically hippies who turned to R'n'R and some originals who had lost their way 'style-wise'. However, the idiot style was accentuated by the arrival of Showaddywaddy shortly afterwards and because of Showaddywaddy (and to a lesser degree Racey, Mud and others) the Teddy Boy image was tainted.

I agree these teds were scruffy little urchins. I have pictures of my father as a ted from 1957-1964 and boy were they smart.
