I found several of this type of mount for the Tacoma, and I imagine there are equivalents for the Ram as well. The real plus for me was having a grommet available right below the passenger seat. Made routing the cable so easy. Don't know if the Ram has equivalent access holes in the passenger compartment.
i did something similar with a screwdriver antenna but mounted it in the stake pocket. works OK but i think there should be more focus on grounding/bonding for a much better receive and transmit antenna. I used 1 inch tinned copper strap for bonding but dont think it works very well unless you sand off the paint and primer down to bare metal for a good contact but then you open your self up to corrosion. anyway good video
The grounding was my biggest concern. I originally had more discussion about grounding, but figured it was overkill for the normal user. Even though I ground off the powder coating on the mount itself, there is some kind of coating on the bolts and I'm not sure they provide a good ground. I'm now running a short strap from the mount to the tailgate latch, which is bare metal. 73!
@@tekspeditionplanet9109 I've got grounding issues with a similar install on a Silverado. I'm running a grounding wire but still not able to get a solid ground. 5/8 wave on 2m and can't hit repeaters that I can clearly with a mag mount 1/4 wave. What style strap are you running for the ground? 73!
@@k4rgd Actually, no grounding strap at all. I just ground off the powder coating on the mount itself, and the bed bolts do the rest. I was concerned about grounding at first, and had plans for running a ground strap to the bare metal of the latch hook, but found that I didn't need it. I've been doing HF POTA activations with it and no issues.
I’m wanting to install a CB on my 2022 Tacoma and I’m wondering if I should spend the extra money to get the No Ground Plane version of the Firestik antenna. Or do you think the regular version would be ok?
The difference, of course, is the need, or not, for a ground which makes the Tacoma body the ground plane, or counterpoise. In my case, by grinding off the powder coating on the mount I was able to get a sufficient ground for my antenna to work. If I remember correctly, the no-ground-plane version is fairly tall, so the tradeoff is clipping garage ceilings and such. My Tacoma is a 2022 as well.
No grounding on that setup? I currently have a 102" CB whip setup in the bed rails and it required a ground. Considering switching mounting positions with this mount so I can put my cover back onto the bed, but grounding was hard enough with the mount I have currently lol
I was concerned about grounding when I set it up. As I showed in the video, I ground off the powdercoat on the mounting brack to ensure good electrical contact. I wasn't sure if that was good enough to reach the bed/body, but after I got it set up it worked great without additional grounding. If I had problems, I was going to run a ground strap to some bare metal on the tailgate latch.
Thanks...just got a Tacoma and was looking for a good video. 73 de W7JS
@@ibdangler there’s another video in there about installing the radio itself, running power, going through the firewall, etc.
great job!
Very nice work and exceptional video. I have a RAM and looking for a viable mounting option for my GMRS antenna..... this looks great.
