- What if your dreams could change reality? This is the dilemma faced by George Orr in this film version of Ursula K. Le Guin's 1971 novel "The Lathe Of Heaven". New York City's public television station WNET produced this film in 1979 with the assistance of the author and originally broadcast it in 1980. Ms. Le Guin has always expressed her satisfaction with this adaptation of her classic work. For more info on the book, go here: en.wikipedia.or.... Last night I dreamed about this movie. Then I woke up and here it was.
Thank you, bahstarde!
Funny, when I watched the original broadcast in 1980, the colors were so vibrant, the screen was so big!
"Take time to go. There is time. To go is to return." I love this part. George has a happy ending as it were.
I love this part too! To go is to return! How divine!
Loved this movie when I first saw it, I was 12.
If you want the original on DVD good luck. It's expensive, there was a remake but, I refuse to see it until i have the original in my collection.
Omg, we were both the same age! I was 12 too in 1980! I was so enchanted with this movie and this is my favorite part.
Thanks for the upload.
A spellbinding production of Ursula Le Guin's masterpiece -- the ultimate Gestalt Shift in Perception!! Thanks so much for posting this gem...:-)
Phenomenal movie,
changed my life watching it
This movie is part of the reason, I now reside in Portland!
Awesome! I forgot how well it moved along. Thanks again bahstarde!
First time I've seen it since it originally aired. Lived in Ft. Worth at the time where parts where filmed including this ending section by the water.
Yep, as I thought. This is the 2nd version of this movie. Only a small change. The Beatles song "With a Little Help From My Friends" was originally performed by The Beatles in the original. But contract problems made them re-dub that song with another singer so they could release the film. See my posts on Part 1 of this film for more info. Good film & yes, lots of memories. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for posting!
I dream,
therefore I am
I forgot about the weird ending and that thing at the hotdog stand. I like the Water Gardens.
I remember having to watch this for school. It scared the heck out of me.
Ha ha ha ha Dr. Haber. That's what happened after I slapped him up. :)
To think, i was a developing fetus when this came out, in a mental dream state of my own! and now ... this is my reality. Strange!
@nealadamsdotcum : Your speculation seems very logical and reasonable to me. Hmm, I never made the connection in he dates, but, I'd say it's a very safe bet that you are absolutely correct. Thanks. Things make much more sense to me now about this film.
@nealadamsdotcum The original Beatles song was not used because it was too expensive to secure the rights to it for the re-release.
pureevilfnord i’ve been wondering when and how I could find the turtle alien with the Beatles song, I wish I could find it somewhere!
I believe this was filmed in Texas
@absolutepresence Here here:)
@jci10 It was, but do not bother. This is the one.
"those who cannot understand will be destroyed upon the lathe of heaven"
"wrap me in a nutshell and count me the master of finite space
if it were not fore that, i have bad dreams"
When the nightmares have all been done then fears are replaced by conversation
you will dream of aggravating minds motives and actions in which you find detest
it is not so hard to imagine with each days word and gesture the lathe ever at work
@jci10 Uhhh, no they should not.
@roscoe68100 Why, thank you. :)
@tttumor Haaaaa.......:)
I've actually seen the remake before the original or read the book and I can say for sure that it sucks.
I really wish someone would upload the 2002 remake version of this movie. I liked that movie much better. Generations X and Y loved the 2002 version as a cult classic while Baby Boomers loved the 1980s version better. I like how they updated the movie and made it more modern and used famous Hollywood actors like Lukas Haas and Lisa Bonet in the remake. Both versions are good but the 2002 version to me and my generation is so much better! We need someone to upload it in English the ordinal language of both movie versions.
You are of course entitled to your take. Ursula Le Guin hated the remake, as I do as well. Had the people who inflicted the remake upon us turned their attention to a redo of “Casablanca,” they’d have set it in an internet cafe (remember those?) in Santa Monica in 1996, and left out all that stuff about the letters of transit. They’d also have omitted Claude Rains’ character.
Had I George Orr’s ability to modify the past, I’d dream a world in which that misconceived production had never been greenlighted. But YMMV vary, and obviously does.
Leguin had terrible ideas. Cool film though. Great shots too. Run Runner!
