  • George Jackson is a wonderful New Zealand-born, Nashville-based oldtime fiddler and a great, methodical teacher to boot. In this video he teaches a classic modal cross tune by John Salyer: Lonesome John. If you're new to modal tunes, this is a superb place to start because the tune itself is quite manageable while also being really fun to play.

In your opinion, would this tune be too complicated for a beginner?

This isn't a complex tune at all, but having a stronger little finger helps, the first minor run/phrase is basically a Schradieck #1.
The best tunes for beginners after slow practise on open strings are simple D major tunes as they allow you to focus more on your foundation skills.
