In this Football Manager 2020 video I give an introduction to my tactical creation process in Football Manager. We talk through my thought process step by step when creating a tactic at a new club.
There's so much to talk about that in this video I barely scratch the surface of tactics creation but this video should provide you with some useful tips and advice for how to approach choosing and creating a tactic. I may do more scripted videos on Tactics in the future on tactics as there's certainly certain bits I flew over quickly in this video and I think they warrant their own videos.

How to play FM:
1. Make a tactic
2. Go 10 games unbeaten
3. Then go 10 games without winning because your strikers suddenly can't score from 5 yards out.
4. Lose motivation and quit
5. Start a new save with another team thinking it will get better because you never learn.
Repeat 1-5
My first time playing FM in my life, and this just happened to me 😂, I'll try it again with another team
Thats what happened to me with haaland, he scored about 18 goals in the bundesliga until january when he got 10 matches without scoring.... I litterally deleted my save for no reason

You do all this, get some good form, win a few matches. Then you lose to a team bottom of the table, their players scoring the first goals of the season. Its hair-pullingly frustrating

Started a save, conceded about 5 thunderbolt 30 yard goals and gave up
Start a save with a top team that dominztes their league like PSG or Bayern so its easier

I was thinking of doing that but ended up getting fm 19 now I have fn 20😂 but in my opinion I think excluding tactics and match gameplay fm18 is better than fm19.

Thanks Jake. Really nice to see how people approach FM. I would love to see this become something of a mini series and see you break down a frmew different teams and the tactics you would choose for maybe a lower league team, a team that might struggle in a top league, a team with less technical players, etc, etc.
Outstanding Jack would love to see you do one of these on corners att/def and set pieces.
Doesn't seem a great deal of changes on the tactic front, from what I've watched you and the ALPHAITES 🤣 show so far seems how certain positions react has been tweaked.
Any plans for this year's big save?
Perhaps this game's big flaw is that it doesn't teach you football. We have all this staff why don't we get more advice with our tactics? They could make it user configurable where people would choose more or less help depending on the difficulty level they want. Or it could be that the better the staff the better the advice so playing for bigger/richer teams was easier than playing with smaller teams, which kind of makes sense to me. As someone who knows close to nothing about football I tend to prefer managing bigger teams so the task isn't so hard (yet I still get wrecked lol).

I found this very helpful as, even after playing several years, "tactics" is an area I haven't gone into this level of detail. I tend to mix players with as many full green options, as I can.
The FMs seems to be getting more complex, year on year, to succeed in.
For example, I started this season with Newcastle. We did ok, I built a credible squad that came second in the league within 4 seasons. Had the best coaching /recruiting/medical staff in PL. Afterwhich, things started going downhill - AND I still don't know why? Most frustrating. I had easily a top 6 squad on paper, but they kept misfiring. I used the same approach as I have done over the years, which has brought success - not guaranteed BUT I win silverware and the league fairly regularly..... Players who normally average 7+ were down at 6.7-8... egad.
Three things I'd like your opinions on pls?
1) I persuaded the board to gimme lots of coaches. Every column was 4.5 stars or 5. I made sure there was a good mix of motivation/discipline/determination. Is it possible to have too many coaches. I previous yaers I seem to have had problems when I allocate 3 coaches to say attacking technical. Results improved when I went down to 2???? Have you had this?
2) If you had a highly talented squad with the best coaches, the vast majority of who like/favour you AND you start losing matches time after time after time.... What would you look at pls?
3) I used to rely heavily on playing fast forwards, very deeply. If I played counter, my strikers would pass lots of through balls creating many 1-1 scoring chances: probably too many in reality. It was successful because of the number of scoring opportunities I'd create nonetheless.
The recent FM20 update seems to have cut back on this tactic. My players no longer loft the ball forward so often? Has the FM20 match engine changed dramatically?
I'm a silver-haired FM20 nut - so any advice most welcome.... TA!

I’m quite new as well, but it sounds like when your players start getting older, they’re not influenced much by coaches or training. Might just have to get younger? As sad as that sounds to loyalists and the sentimental.
i want to love this game but i literally can't win a game, no matter what i do, the game just ruthlessly exposes any tiny weakness in my team and i just cant win. its the same as when i tried like 5 years ago. really hoping this video can help lol
Matt Majcan you might just be over correcting your tactic. Watch a few game with extended highlights and see if you can find any repeating tactical errors in the game
@@Noticer333 im not really sure what the problem was but i got used to the game finally, im back to back treble winners in the MLS now settings records for games won and stuff. I think you might be right that simpler is better. too many instructions and players just seem to get confused
That’s good that is working now! Also, it might not be that they’re getting confused but instead that they’re simply not good enough (player skill wise) to play that tactically complex.

The ball playing defenders actually are counter intuitive to playing out of the back, contrary to the name they actually tend to play longer more risky passes instead of short passes to the midfield. If you want to play out of the back through defence and into the base of your midfield you’d better off with two central defenders.
Stoped watching after he said that. The final nail in the coffin to make me realize he doesnt understand that much
yeah and with regular central defenders you can also instruct them to make shorter passes and take less risks so they just make easy safe passes into midfield

Few questions I still have:
1. what's the difference between a poacher and a AF?
2. what's the difference between a wingback and a full back?
1. Poachers tend to play off another striker rather than being the focal point of an attack
2. Wingbacks will naturally sit higher up the pitch than CB's even when defending

i have set my tactics. my team won every end of the season game, we went from 20th to 13th place saving the team from relegation.
new season, much better players, everything is green, tactics players form, getting new players. and here i am losing to newly promoted teams whose whole team isn't even worth one player from my team.? Help. i hate this game

I do this, I play to the teams strengths with my tactics, I win every pre season game the I lose every league game. Anyone know y?
I adjust my tactic after opponent's shape. I firstly focus on how to get ball out of defence (3 central defenders?, 2 defenders?, bombing fullbacks?, supporting fullbacks? - same goes for midfield and attack). At the same time I also select the shape to cut off opponent's passing opportunities. It's a balance act. My shape determines the teams mentality.
I have a 76% win rate in FM 18 with United. Serial league winner and lifted the CL trophy a couple of times in six seasons.
certain tactics do well against others depending whether you're home or away. so have more than one tactic trained
Chubbychenko I know what u mean but I won 7 pre season games with Leicester and beat the Bayern first team then lost 9 in a row in the prem

@workthespace great guide. I'd really love to see a guide on role partnerships such as SS-F9 in the attacking, or other combinations in middle field
great suggestions - a guide that shows how to work some different, newer roles, like ss, f9, ramd, mezz, carr, etc. maybe 2 more strategies with teams you think have players that suit it..

I know I should play to my team's strengths, but I love my weird attacking, ball playing, (too much) pressing 5-3-2 (with wing-backs basically "doing whatever", one defensivly-minded cm and two advanced playmakers basically overwhelming with sheer mass most of defences) straight from fm18 and I'm sure I'll give it a go once i get my fm20
Anyone else suffer from horrid finishing in 1 v 1 situations no matter how good the striker is? I find that when i simulate through the game by going on holiday the finishing quality drastically increases and I have a much better chance of winning while keeping my tactics and formation the same
FM20 just patched the game engine with better 1v1 finishing.

Why on earth is my team not scoring goals?
I end up with over 30 shots every single game, more than double than anyother team, and I STILL CANT SCORE

Hopefully this helps me cos so far I've suckes so bad and I lose to nearly everyone, it is only my 2nd fm game in total 150 hours
I am currently playing on FM 2020, having started on FM 1999, so does anyone else suffer from "Ghost goals" during a match ? That is, when the ball obviously crosses the goal line, there is no foul, no offside, no visible reason for the goal no to happen, but the play just just carries on and a goal is not awarded, I have had 3 go against me in my current season, and 1 go for me when the opposition had one not awarded.

I normally have my main tactic then edit that in game or on the fly if I need to change things and have my second tactic as a completely different formation as a more defensive approach for when I play the bigger teams. Should I stop doing that or is that okay?
Thats ok too. I play in a similar way. I make up the tactic like thos video pretty much but only give any instructions pre game and then adjust wathever necessary durong the game it works out fine

How do you get the subs next to your actual line up on the tactics page?
what is the benefit of having your centre DC's having right foot for the right side and left foot for the left side? I always figured it leaves you with no player with their strong foot in the middle. I always thought it worked well making sure all of your back four play with the same footedness to reduce weak areas (unless you are using your wingbacks to cross).
You're asking seriously? It's common sense
If you are right footed and you're the right central defender it will be easier for you to pass to left or right, if you were on the left side you will probably find moments were you have to turn your whole body to the left or use your weak (left) foot if you want to make a pass to the right Basically it's more uncomfortable, gives the defender a narrow panorama of easy pass options and therefore it's riskier
How do you change/tailor your tactic from game to game?
I won the Premier League and Europa League double in my first time of playing football manager. Does that make me a brilliant manager or is the game that easy?

you’ve done pretty well, but united have a very strong team and i think you have to test yourself in other leagues first

The match engine is different so tactics that were good last year won't just work this year. I dont believe it'll be possible

@@lps2013 Yeah sometimes I play 2 up front too, depends on whether I have a decent #10 at the club (or enough money to purchase one). My formation is not pretty on the eye but effective all the same 😊

Not broken, have just found it effective in my saves. It can take 2/3 seasons to get the right players for the formation especially if your like me and will start with a team in lower leagues.

Why dont you use the personal position? So if you sub Brandt, Sancho will automatically get another playing role when he comes in.
Was keeping it to the basics for the tutorial but I tend to not like to change player roles too much as often my team instructions and formations are selected with specific roles in mind that I want my players to fit

@@WorkTheSpace I did mate, jumped the gun a bit😂 I have a real curiosity about s trying up midfield with Arsenal, whether to go with to DMs or One and whether to go with a No.10 or two CMS. Cause I'm playing a Pepé, Laca and Auba upfront I'm concious I need a solid base in midfield. I'm also wanting the Fullbacks Tierney and Bellerin to give me the width so I don't want to get caught short defensively when they attack.
Ideally i'd love a pivot with a Segunda Volante and BWM.
