For someone that size, I expected a higher max. He's not doubling his body weight, yet has a pretty rigorous workout.... I'm at 157 and benching 400, but then again I focus on bench and don't get paid millions...!
+Muscle Co mix of squats, power cleans, and calf raises. Calf raises really give him the extra edge in the fourth quarter when he's gotta stomp some players
Suh was such a dominant force in college (and has been in the NFL for a long time now too)… I played HS ball with an O lineman that played him in college… at he guy I knew was an absolute beast, was a multi year starter in college and an all American… A great football player…. I watched him get rag dolled the entire game by Suh lol… I always laughed when the media would report on him being “too mean”… There’s no such thing as a DT that’s “too mean” lol…
@RyanOFelt i apologize if you didn't understand the point I was trying to make. I wasn't criticizing the trainer- he is properly preparing suh for the combine. What im putting forth is that general managers and coaches shouldnt really look too far into combine 225 reps when assessing a player's football strength. Sorry for the mixup- but I do appreciate your witty sarcasm
I'm still in the womb and I bench 950 for reps and squat over 1400 lbs like it's just the bar. Not to mention I'm already 7'9 320 lbs and can run a 1.2 40
@JNFreije I agree that clean, squat and deadlift are more important than bench. I would say that for an offensive or defensive lineman, bench would help indicate strength in pass protection or pass rushing. For all other position players, very little value.
@64ratm64, I think you misunderstood what I said, I've never said bench press wasn't important, I said the max bench press(1-Rep) isn't important to football players, it's useless to them. Like I said, the Bench Press test measure brute strength, but the test is mainly for overall power, it's a combination of speed, strength, & explosiveness for the upper body. Brute Strength & overall power are 2 different things.
That’s awesome man. That’s more than Hafthor, The Mountain from Game of Thrones was able to bench even after abusing steroids for a decade and winning the World’s Strongest Man competition so you must’ve set all sorts of world records by now
being able to do 225 30 times is pretty damn impressive. but he was also defensve rookie of the year. so being able to play football at a high level helps. im strong, but not that strong. this guys is freaking impressive from a football standpoint and strength.
They might have to press somebody off the line. But, in reality, that's the last resort type of thing. A good defensive lineman will try and work a move first, such as a punch over, rip, hand swipe, etc. But, again, you're partly right.
600lbs is world class for anyone of any size. Diminishing marginal returns hit in pretty early when it comes to your weight to strength ratio in regards for bench press.
They don't have to have a bodyweight ratio bench because each position has different ranges they are expected to hit. Even wide receivers are expected to hit 5 or more.
We have a lot of people here who can supposedly bench over 300lb. I'm going to be honest, I'm 5'10 and 225 lb., I lift but I don't do bench press that often at all, so I can only do about 230, but I can curl 90 lb. on the dumbbells, 180 on the barbell, and dumbbell press about 180 also. At least I'm honest enough to go out and say I only do 230. I think I have the strength to go over 300 lb. if I did it on a regular basis for a few months, but I don't really care that much, I'm not one of those idiots who thinks bench press is the only workout that matters, and besides it's kind of a pain in the ass because when you start doing a lot of weight you need a spotter, I like to lift on my own schedule.
In sports like football and rugby, you need explosiveness when coming face to face with another athlete and being the first off the line. That is why this guy is bouncing the weight, for explosiveness and leverage. In bodybuilding they use controlled motion to gain muscle. Please stop comparing contact sports to bodybuilding.
It is good to do both, the slower repetition is good for targeting all areas of the muscle. If part of your muscle is atrophied while other muscle groups around it aren't, that spells injury.
People seems confused about what the Bench Press test is a for, while it does measure strength, it's mainly about how explosive you can be with your upper body. The max bench press isn't important to an football player.
5'9 1/2. 15 years old. Bench 310. RB. Squat 405. Dead lift 450. Clean 265. I'll be a Sophmore this year. I haven't done the 225 test but I think I can get 10 - 12 reps.
What the gym rats posting on here are failing to consider, is that this guy also has a 35+" vertical, can dunk a basketball with ease, and runs a sub 5 second 40 yard dash.....THAT spells freight rain!
Mr OnPoint Your or lack of punctuation makes responding a little tricky. You omitted at least a comma in your opening, then didn't insert a question mark - to close a question - nor a period or exclamation point, to close a sentence. If the blatantly absent punctuation is a question mark, then absolutely, "train" would be spot on. Conversely, a missing exclamation point or period would "rain" upon your "OnPoint" position and require remedial English - Night classes perhaps(?)
ah55761 "Your or lack of punctuation" Lol you lost the argument in the first sentence. It's supposed to be " Your lack of punctuation". You are incompetent.
Mr OnPoint Argument? My intention was "or lack thereof' for whatever its worth. Must make you very happy, now that you got what you wanted. What a child...
ah55761 "You got what you wanted" it is instead: "you've gotten what you want" or "You have gotten what you want". You're not very proficient at this are you? tsk tsk
@MrJeezy901 Just hit 225x10 a few weeks ago, and then nothing like youtube to crash you back down to earth. It's good though, keeps us lifters striving for more!
Even if some on here are full of s*** about their Personal Bench, there is some truth to their beef. How can you accurately compare strength & endurance when someone outweighs the other guy by 80 lbs (or even 20-30 lbs difference at same position)?? This is why the NFL should have a Bodyweight Bench Press Test at the Combine
I agree with all of your comments Powerlifter and will add, any number of reps over six is a waste of time for building strength and is just building endurance. In High School we had boys on the FB team who could bench 350 at a body wt of 180 but they were squatting with 400 and over and dead lifting 400-500. Ndamukong Suh looks big enough to be benching 500. btw, I saw a powerlifter break the worlds record in the 165 lb class with a 500 lb bench press in Baltimore, circa 2005-06.
abraves10 I'm a defensive tackle and i have no clue what a bmi is but i am the strongest one in my grade. and speed on the forty is different than quickness. i cause fumbles because i'm quicker than the center
if you want to scale the bench press to bodyweight then you open the door to scale things like cone drills and 40 yard dashes to bodyweight. being of a certain bodytype or weight will always be advantageous for one thing and not for another. you cant punish him for being heavy and benching a lot if your not willing to discredit a small fast guy for being fast.
I'm not saying it is a bad lift, I still bench. I'm just saying a lot of people are switching to more incline or dropping bench, as incline is the better lift. Honestly I think it is best to do both.
speed is how fast you can do something. power is the amount of work you do divided by the time it takes you to do it (or the speed at which you do the work)
No, they should replace it with incline, replace a few others, and add squat, and others. I think the combine should be completely redone, and was just stating one specific change I'd make.
VinylUnboxings trying to get stronger? He just said he can only do 135 4 times if he does more weight then he would only be able to do it like 2 times he's not gaining nothing by that really
***** aches on the back is still a good lift.. - but you may not lift your ass, and he does that on almost every rep - no hate though, he's still strong as hell!
Never any need to arch the back. I always won without arching the back because I trained. I never said he broke any rules. People who arch the back during the lift need to use less weight.
@AirJordan337 you train for more than the typical "5 second play" for a couple reasons.....its never bad to be better than whats needed......makes it so the 5 seconds at a time is easier than what your doing in training so you can push yourself harder during the game, and in case the avg. play time in an up coming game ends up being say 9 seconds instead its all just to be prepared for anything that may happen
The bar is touching his chest because he's moving through a full range of motion, but he's not bouncing it. Bouncing the bar is not allowed in the Combine because it makes each rep easier and it's dangerous.
Yes that's allowed. Watch the videos of guys at the combine. This is not a powerlifting meet. People always think that people bounce the weight to try and cheat but the thing is that even if you bounce it, it still requires tons of endurance and strength to do those high reps the average person could not do 225 for 35 reps if they've never trained to do it. Ndamukong couldn't walk into a gym and do that either if he didn't train his muscles to respond to that type of work.
@DazedNConfused01 When you're blocking, jamming, bullrushing, etc. you need a lot of upper body strength, and I promise that benching 225 might not be the best test, but it's a much better test than throwing around a 5-10 kg medicine ball...
Did this trainer really just say that incline bench takes shoulders and triceps out of the equation? Dude, what?! You use way more shoulders and tris in an incline press
@Joegengsta22 ah so testing upper body endurance is pointless? dude they test everything at the combine. to think that they only test your bench is just stupid.
That exercise with the bands is called Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm-Flailing Tubemen
For someone that size, I expected a higher max. He's not doubling his body weight, yet has a pretty rigorous workout....
I'm at 157 and benching 400, but then again I focus on bench and don't get paid millions...!
I'm guessing you're short, Suh is tall af so he does not have the leverage guys with shorter arms have.
lol all these kids lying about how much they bench, makes me laugh
What lift does he use to practice stepping on a players leg while he is down?
single leg squats mostly with a mixture of single leg box jumps
+Muscle Co mix of squats, power cleans, and calf raises. Calf raises really give him the extra edge in the fourth quarter when he's gotta stomp some players
of course yuh guys actually name workouts LMFAO
Muscle Co 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The lift of his foot along with socks, shoes and his hidden shank
Awesome video.. what a smart well spoken guy.. Even this Bears fan can't help rooting for him..
Who he appears to be on this video vs who he is on the field are like night and day! I love his style of play. He plays hard ass ole school football.
1:06 when i tried to show off my dance in the prom
Edit:this aint funny
His bench form is a lot better than most I've seen for this test. Good for him. That's solid.
all these people are talking shit about it and i bet they couldn't even compete with this guy
@toomorrow7: My video is but a click away.
Suh is a real football player. Love his attitude about the game. It's football after all
Suh was such a dominant force in college (and has been in the NFL for a long time now too)… I played HS ball with an O lineman that played him in college… at he guy I knew was an absolute beast, was a multi year starter in college and an all American… A great football player…. im glad to see someone else who humps the air when they bench
1:00 i swear it sounds like he says " do you still have the speed and strength to punch somebody lmao
@David Brutus took the words outta my mouth
@JNFreije I agree that clean, squat and deadlift are more important than bench. I would say that for an offensive or defensive lineman, bench would help indicate strength in pass protection or pass rushing. For all other position players, very little value.
Suh is a beast!!
If you extend your hips and get triple extension, as you're supposed to, you're in a position similar to that of the top portion of the incline bench.
i just turned 7 and bench press 550..yeah im pretty fucking good not to mention im 6'8 280
Haha
Dude, I'm 3 and can bench 650, and squat 1250. Not to mention 7 foot 450 and can run a 3.0 second 40 yard dash.
+george clooney I am 14, can squat 95, bench 65, 7.80 40 yd, and am 5 foot 8....
+Wesley Rice u weak
+Wesley Rice Lol when I was 14 (which was only 3 years ago) I was squatting 250 and benching 135

I'm 21, 6 foot 5 and i weigh 275 pounds. My max bench is 575. 225 is literally cardio for me lol. Still fun to rep out tho for a good pump.
That’s awesome man. That’s more than Hafthor, The Mountain from Game of Thrones was able to bench even after abusing steroids for a decade and winning the World’s Strongest Man competition so you must’ve set all sorts of world records by now

5'9 1/2. 15 years old. Bench 310. RB. Squat 405. Dead lift 450.
Clean 265. I'll be a Sophmore this year. I haven't done the 225 test but I think I can get 10 - 12 reps.
That's great u must weigh 350
***** I'm not gonna lie like all of these other people I'm 6 feet tall 15, weigh 165 and can bench 205. I'm not lying.

thanks bro aprreciate it
i hope i get that good this year i am hitting 315 for reps but i have to work on endurance i want to hit 225 30+
question how many reps do you do off the speed brust and how much time between
my muscles burn just watching this...
No rep. No rep. No rep. Repeat until infinity.
BEAST
Where the workout he used to learn how to stomp so hard?
@MrJeezy901
Just hit 225x10 a few weeks ago, and then nothing like youtube to crash you back down to earth. It's good though, keeps us lifters striving for more!
@Punk4Life408 how about just a max squat, deadlift, power clean, bench, and pullups for reps
look up( how bad do you want it/ Victor Johnson )
great video
Even if some on here are full of s*** about their Personal Bench, there is some truth to their beef. @JUSTDHATTV Note to self, never make a sarcastic comment on youtube. The intelligence level isn't high enough to comprehend what's happening.
@JNFreije True those are more important lifts than bench, but they test your legs and power in the 40 and vert, thats why they don't do them
you are right about the bench but the real test in football is power clean ... explode through a tackle etc ..
@hollingstihl oh so u think kicking your opponent while they're on the ground isnt cheap?
Where does he train how to step on guys?
abraves10 I'm a defensive tackle and i have no clue what a bmi is but i am the strongest one in my grade. and speed on the forty is different than quickness. i cause fumbles because i'm quicker than the center
"born strong" this guy is going to cause havoc in the nfc north for many more years to come
@ridonculous187 He did say that. By punch he means the initial hit againts a lineman.
if you want to scale the bench press to bodyweight then you open the door to scale things like cone drills and 40 yard dashes to bodyweight. being of a certain bodytype or weight will always be advantageous for one thing and not for another. you cant punish him for being heavy and benching a lot if your not willing to discredit a small fast guy for being fast.
deadlift n squat show true power... All ur power comes from the floor up
SUHHHHH!!!!
I never lifted as much weight as he is doing, but does not going so fast improper and have high risk of injury.
I'm not saying it is a bad lift, I still bench. I'm just saying a lot of people are switching to more incline or dropping bench, as incline is the better lift. Honestly I think it is best to do both.
how many reps did he do?
@JohnnH999 ok i just said bench press calculator says when you did 10 reps of 200 the avrege maxout is 265
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but aren't speed and power the same thing, albeit in different parts of the body?
speed is how fast you can do something. power is the amount of work you do divided by the time it takes you to do it (or the speed at which you do the work)
Are you serious
I'm not going to forgive you for being wrong.
Chomper s
Physics wasn't his strong point... LOL
hes not lying he has a video
my muscles are sore seeing him doing this
480 bench max = 37 reps
No, they should replace it with incline, replace a few others, and add squat, and others. I think the combine should be completely redone, and was just stating one specific change I'd make.
its pretty amazing what these athletes can do, hes 330 lbs and can run 13.5 mph and can bench 225 32 times
is the bar 45lbs to if it is isnt that 270?
how many reps did he get
I'm 6'8" 285 lbs and I bench 135 4 times. What am I doing wrong?
+GodlySkunk Try benching more weight for more reps.
+Jason L wtf less weight more reps he probably already is doing a lot of weight for him so you need to go down on your weight more reps
+Dylan Maness not if he's trying to get stronger
VinylUnboxings trying to get stronger? He just said he can only do 135 4 times if he does more weight then he would only be able to do it like 2 times he's not gaining nothing by that really
+VinylUnboxings More reps is always better than more weight bro
He arches his back a lot not just at the end to pump out a couple extra reps, but by the 8th or so rep.
***** aches on the back is still a good lift.. - but you may not lift your ass, and he does that on almost every rep - no hate though, he's still strong as hell!
Not a bad thing
always keep back on the bench. never ever never arch the back. use less weight instead of arching back. No need to cause injury.
j.d. Hogg IPF rules states that the back is allowed to be arched, as long as the shoulders and butt maintain contact with the bench
Never any need to arch the back. I always won without arching the back because I trained. I never said he broke any rules. People who arch the back during the lift need to use less weight.
@AirJordan337 you train for more than the typical "5 second play" for a couple reasons.....its never bad to be better than whats needed......makes it so the 5 seconds at a time is easier than what your doing in training so you can push yourself harder during the game, and in case the avg. play time in an up coming game ends up being say 9 seconds instead
its all just to be prepared for anything that may happen
he is a fucking monster...yea!
Coming up on 61 and got 24 reps 225. .... 205 lbs body wt.
he's bouncing it off his chest. Is that allowed in this 225 bench test?
+Jack Swidas doesn't really let you do much more reps. 225 is still heavy lol.
+Dennis Rogers of course it does do you even lift bro
+stim178 225 minus the bar
I'm fan close grip that's where the game is played inside
Also he's not trying to bench as high as he can 480 can probably get him to the point where he can comfortably push lineman out of the way.
This Guy was named best defensive linemen in NFL...as a rookie...not just best rookie.
how da hell do you get that strong dammit i need to know. i aint got no weights
strong guy to bad he cant control his temper on the field
Did you even watch the video? They said Suh can bench 480. Pretty sure that's more that twice his body weight.
Ndamukong suh can do more reps of 225 then most guys on here hating then they can sqaut
Respect from Ohio, USA.

Yeah: very odd. Even a child could work that one out.
All that working out is bad for your beer tolerance Suh.
@abraves10 I'm a defensive tackle my max at bench is about 260 i said i rep it not max out
thats not his max... its the standard bench press weight at the combine.
@Joegengsta22 ah so testing upper body endurance is pointless? dude they test everything at the combine. to think that they only test your bench is just stupid.
he is so soft spoken, but than he wrecks on the field.
your right
