- Keeping the O gauge layout in tip top shape takes some work! Here are a couple ways to make it a bit easier. Today we focus on the 2nd layout, which hasn’t seen much love lately. This layout is 20’x4’ with Menards tubular track and is powered by MTH and Lionel powered bricks. Equipped with both TMCC and DCS control systems.
Zach, we’re glad you liked our track cleaning method. Thanks for the shout out! We love watching your videos. Have a great weekend!
Just subscribed to your RUclips channel
Thank you guys! Always enjoying y’all’s videos as well! Hope all is well
Thanks for the cleaning car tip. I was just about to start working with a car. Your tips cut all my trial & error time!
Hi Zack ! Unfortunately I’m still building and I don’t have a you tube channel nor know how to start one. I’ve been posting pictures on Facebook. That’s as far as I got. Going to need lot’s of help working on mountains ,tunnels, and rivers. I was so happy for you when someone left a check for you at a train store. That is like the ultimate gift and you don’t fine many people like that. Specially today the way thing’s are. When I saw the Pennsylvania Passenger car’s I knew what was in the other box. So happy for you. That was fantastic. Love watching your videos. Trying to get ideas. Like the railings from trainworxs and your backdrop.
Best to you , stay safe, and happy railroading ! Enjoy your weekend.

Hi Zach, I tried your method of track cleaning using a "Mr. Clean" eraser pad and denatured alcohol and I couldn't believe how clean and how quickly the track cleaned up, I was "blown" away. I didn't use a gondola car but just dowsed the pad with the alcohol and used a piece of PVC for the hard to get at spots. This has been a great experience for me and I will always use this method to clean my track. Thanks for the instructional video. 5 stars out of 5 stars.
Glad to hear Roger! Happy it worked for you!
Thanks for the cleaning tips Zack.👍looking forward for your updates 👋😎🛤🚂
Nice touch blowing the whistle whilst cleaning!
Great ideas on track cleaning. I use a very similar method for tires on a steamer but honestly never thought about it for diesels. I usually ended up taking off side frames. Thanks for the tip. Great looking layout. Definitely enjoyable to watch.
Thanks for posting this great track cleaning tip, Zack! So inexpensive and effective! Does a great job! Enjoy the weekend!
Thanks for all the tips, going to try it on my track great video great lay out!
Great video. Track and wheel cleaning is of paramount importance and is too often neglected. Your method of cleaning the wheels is really the best. Yes, it may take longer, but the effort you put in will pay you back ten fold in the long run. Dusting structures as well contributes to help clean and maintain a well running layout. This video was spot on - well done!
THANKS FOR SHARING!!! Great Video!!!
LOVE THE SHELVING!!!!!
Thank you very much for the great ideas on track cleaning and cleaning of cars and wheels. Great video
Great tips! Thanks for sharing. I am going to have to try that cleaning car setup. I designed my layout to be able to reach all the track but there are a few spots that are tough to get to, so a cheap solution like that is just what I need.
Thanks for your great advice it looks like it’s working great you have a very nice layout that looks very well taken care of I applaud you for that!
Great video! Thanks for the ideas.
Those are some great tips Zach, thanks for sharing
Good idea on cleaning the tracks
I’ve been doing much of the same. However using the picks to install the traction tires is a new one for me. Thanks much.
Zach! Very informative. I likewise use a makeup brush and the Isoprop to clean but I did lean the best best way to get to the hard to reach areas of track cleaning. Thanks for that tip. I'll try it.
Thanks for all the great tips.keep up great videos
Good info on cleaning supplies
You put out a good video on track cleaning always a must see everyone has a method not all are good but yours is the most affordable best one I've seen 👌
Thanks Ray!
Your welcome
That was great Zak you really look after your layout the layout looks good and you have a great array of locos and trucks thanks for another great video 😀👍
GREAT track cleaning tip! Thanks, I enjoy you videos.
For wheels on rolling stock:
cut a cotton swabs in half, put one into a battery operated variable speed drill, use alcohol on the swab.
With the drill on a slow rotation, angle the wheel 30-45 deg to the cotton swab (getting the flange too), and have at it. You can control the free rotation of the wheel being cleaned by putting your thumb on the cross truck wheel, providing resistance as needed.
Enjoy.....
Thanks Anthony! I’ll have to give it a shot!
I'm always cleaning my track. I have no idea why Zach. I like your setup for a cleaning car. Great video!
It’s always getting filthy! Never ending! LOL Thanks Al!
Good idea Zack, Looking forward to see the changes to the big layout
Helpful video! If you’re doing any engine maintenance/lubrication in the future, I’d love to see a video on that too
Hey Zach,
Great tip for cleaning the track. Oxidation is a never ending problem especially with electricity flowing through those rails!!
Nice thanks for the tip Zack!
Man that was a great idea on track and layout dusting and cleaning loved it gave me an idea for my model cars and slot cars loving your vids here one of your fav Detroit Mi.train lovers waiting and watching on second layout upgrades
Thank you!
Will be trying it soon thanks for great idea.
Can’t wait for your videos.
A great Layout, and anything worth having requires good maintenance.
Thanks for the advice zack!
Great tips!
Some good idea's Zack, will be waiting for the update
Great Videos
Yes, Besides the excess oil or grease on the engine's wheels I think the traction tires contribute a great deal to the black residue on the track.
Hey Zach! Your videos just keep getting better and better! Great tips! Here's one for you. Instead of using a dremel to clean the wheels, attach a rubber washer to the dremel and apply it to the axle of the upside-down car to spin the wheel set while holding the q-tip with alcohol against the wheel. You might have to adjust how the upside-down car is supported so the wheel sets don't pivot on you, but it could greatly speed things up. What do you think? T4
Sounds like it could work! Would probably take a little finagling, but could be worth it!
@@CountryBunkersTrains That's what I thought when I was thinking about you manually having to spin each of those wheels...not the way any of us wants to spend their time! Have an incredible day today...with the trains! T4
Good advice Zach
Back when I used to run trains on my layout everyday for a few hours I never had dirty track , the moment I leave it for a few days I would have to clean everything.
Long time subscriber, first time commenting. Zach, you are a fantastic ambassador for our hobby. Thanks for taking the time for all you do. I enjoy your videos very much. I also use isopropyl alcohol to clean my track. I will get some magic erasers to aid in the job!
Thanks Peter! Hopefully the erasers work out for you. I’ve been pretty happy with em. Glad to hear you are enjoying the channel! Thanks!
Great maintenance video one problem I had was oiling the pick up rollers my F9 ABA units running choppy I found that if use bachman conductive oil on the rollers and axles I get smooth operation
Have heard great things about that oil, but haven’t tried it yet. Should check it out. Have had great luck with the aerosol crc electrical cleaner on the E units of the postwar stuff.
Thanks For The Tip Zack, With Zack You Can Have Clean Track. The Mr Clean Pads You Can Get Them Anywhere, So Cool.
In the uk we use a relco unit. H0/00 work on dc voltage if the engine stalls because of no power (dirt on the track) the relco unit switches to ac and burns the dirt away
Yes , I used the same technique but I turned your wheel simultaneously You have to clean your rolling stack regularly. I try to keep a schedule of the maintenance. On my Clipboard and all the ruins that the status of the car when it was cleaned when it was repaired reinforced modified enjoy. I don't have a complete set of anyone lying but I am. A myriad of rolling stock from post era, my ML MGH and other manufacturers.
But cleaning the motor is important too. But the fly little motors can be intimidating with their little brushes.
But I want a lot of your videos.Gave me the confidence to work on the engines. The little motor With flywheels thanks
LOL... OMG! I had no idea there was two layouts!
If im being honest, this is actually a really good idea!
great idea with the car.. may I make a suggestion, I used to do the same thing but then I started using acetone to clean the track and the wheels works 10 times better then i cote them both with crc 226 which is an electrical lubricant and my trains work better and the track stays cleaner longer thank you sir.
I’ll have to give it a try. I can definitely see the acetone doing a bit better job.
@@CountryBunkersTrains it does and the crc-226 helps keep the moisture out, works great
Great Stuff.....
Zack, try wiping a very light coat of Ford Mercon atf on track. Supposed to greatly reduce oxidation. Outfit called Tinman3rail uses it on older track. I use a wood block I attach a cloth to with a 3/8 inch dowel about 4 feet long glued at an angle. bloch
Good video. I have hand access to most of my track. I take a dry cotton cloth, with no nap, and wipe the track. Most if the gunk comes off. Then I run the track cleaning car. Then I wipe it again with another clean cloth. I clean the track every 2 weeks. Amazing how dirty it gets. Cleaning car wheels is tedious.
It is surprising how dirty it gets, and so quick!
Great track cleaning method, & cheap too!
Cleaning car wheels a chore, also MESSY! Has to be done now & then!
Like to see you run the GT gp9 diesel. What make is It?
alcohol actually atracts dirt when it dries and acetone does to but not as much as the alcohol so thats why i seal it with the crc226
Cool I do same thing but I use a real railroad spike for weight
Well Owning 2 Layouts Can Be Challenging But Fun you might change For a something But Loving 2 Layouts Is Fun This is How You spend your Money Or you Might Flip Flop Something like Buildings That May be cool looking. I Will Never Stop Being a Dual Layout Owner My Wife Will Soon Be A dual Owner As Well.
I used a rag frist aid alcohol 🍺 to clean 🧽 my track 😊
Nice!
Hey Zach,
Hope your well, love the videos! Have you tried No-Ox-Id Special A? It’s a product I’ve found in my short while in the hobby that works well at adding conductivity and reducing maintenance due to oxidation. It’s a product used very sparingly but also if added to the frogs of a turn out it helps them throw better too! Would love to hear your feedback!
Thanks Ethan!
I’ll have to check it out!
I only lightly clean my track it rusts very easy maybe due to age because its pre 1922. So I leave just a little grease on it to keep it from rusting
That’s some old track! Sounds like you got a good rhythm for keeping it going though
What if you got like a cake pan pour that cleaning agent in the bottom of the cake pan deep enough for the wheels 2 be covered with it and let's the cars just sit and soak in it then no scrubbing time and you can go and do other things just let them soak for a half hr. Or so and see what happens
Love the car track cleaner di do I'm. On it
I want to get some of those trestles. Shoot I'd pay u for those....lol your layout is serious
They are very easy to make, just some 1x2 wood cut to size, screwed together and painted.
Got my tracks Done Now I Am Glueing and Grassin My Ho Table Then I will Be Putting Down the The Track.
I’m sure it is looking great!
In All Due Time It Will Be Done.
Thanks I have to make a cleaning car try it out thank for your idea
How do reprogram my Kansas City Southern legacy locomotive
Good
Does your oil contain mineral oil
Zack and Caleb, that track cleaning car idea is fantastic! I really like it. There is another guy online who goes literally bananas screaming about never using isopropyl alcohol on the tracks. He admits it cleans well, but claims that it actually attracts new dirt quicker. He is his video; ruclips.net/video/1r2L8NSxOnQ/видео.html He also makes a very good argument for using electrical contact cleaner (CRC). If the magic eraser will support the CRC--might be the way to go? Unless you're a chemist it is hard to know what will eat what else. He also warns vehemently about using track erasers. I think we have all heard about never using steel wool as they leave a lot of metallic fragments that can later get sucked up into the trucks and even drive mechanisms of the locomotives.
I have heard of some disadvantages of the alcohol, however I can’t say ive seen the track get dirtier due to it.I’m sure the crc would be a great alternative being electrical cleaner. I’ll have to check him out, thanks!
Love the Fake News stand....
If they don’t have to clean the track. They must not be piling there engines
Just likeo a real railroad, there's plenty of maintenance n a large model railroad.
Denatured alcohol works better.
