In this video, we explore the unique operation of Standard Gauge iron ore trains in South Australia, featuring Distributed Power Units (DPUs) at the rear of the train. These DPUs are used exclusively on loaded trips from the Wirrida loadout to Whyalla, as seen at our first location at Lincoln Gap where a single locomotive leads the train without an inline fuel tanker.
The train's journey begins at Spencer Junction, where it enters the yard, undergoes a crew change, and departs for the Wirrida loadout located 540 km away on the Tarcoola to Darwin Railway. We catch up with the train south of Tent Hill, the first crossing loop on the iconic Trans-Australia Railway.
At Wirrida, a balloon loop ensures the lead locomotives, inline fuel tankers, and crew car are correctly positioned at the front of the loaded train for its return trip. Once back at Spencer Junction, the rear locomotive transitions to the lead for the final leg to Whyalla. The unloading at Whyalla also takes place on a balloon loop, enabling the locomotives to seamlessly face the right direction for their next journey.
Come back on Thursday to see a loaded train head down to Whyalla from Spencer Junction!
