People did listen to him and he did gain popular support. The London dockers are one example. Unfortunately Edward Heath ran him out of the tory party after the European debate in the 70s. Mr Powell advised his supporters to vote Labour who were at that time opposed to Britain being a member of the European economic community. After this, Mr Powell left and became a member of the Unionist party in northern Ireland and disappeared into the political wilderness and the people went back to sleep. The only party that carried on the fight were the National Front who became Britain's 3rd biggest party. They imploded after the 1979 election after Margaret Thatcher and the conservatives promised to tackle immigration which they never did. Then we had the rise of the BNP in the 90s & early 2000s which again imploded around 2010. Now here we are.
