I have a BCBGMAXAZRIA dress that looks VERY similar (it's quite a bit shorter though!). I bought it solely because when my boyfriend and I first started dating, I wore another black dress (from H&M lol) and my boyfriend said I reminded him of the painting :)

I agree, and there are a few reasons. Evening dress in the 19th century tend to be sleeveless and display some amount of your decolletage, however, they tend to have very wide straps with pleats, frills, lace and all sort of embellishments. I don't recall seeing shoulder straps look this skinny, like on Madame X, and they make her look almost uncover at her shoulder ( it's a more modern look). Secondly, the whole gown is soooo un-decorated, if you look at contemporaneous fashion prints you can see there were no shortage of frills and draping and bows and embroidery and shit.. on the skirt. That possibly makes the gown fit into the streamline, clean aesthetic we tend to see nowadays. Feel free to correct me or add more :)
I remember reading about a critic that liked it with the fallen strap because "one more struggle, and the lady will be free," meaning her bodice would fall down. To which Amelie responded that the dress had boning- you know, like normal 1880s formal gowns -and couldn't possibly have come off. Which just goes to show that creepers have never bothered to understand how women's clothing actually works.
This is great because it goes to show that he obviously doesn't get laid, or else he'd have probably held a dress in his hands before and known at least a tiny bit about something like boning... Eyy that was an unintended pun.
I guess you all's husbands/boyfriend's/brothers/etc must be perverts also, because I'm sure they've thought the same things.

@@user-ty1cz5kw3s Yeah, most of the time it is hard to have a proper translation for these kind of "slang/meme quotes", for us(Turkish) as well. But in this case, it needs to be in Polish for my joke.
Actually I prefer it in english, i found out she was Polish(yes ive seen surname but I just thought she was second generation of slavic family in the UK for example) months after Ive discovered her. First time I heard her speaking I thought it was a commercial 😂

@@verybarebones Ah! Typo. More like 38 inches. But the purpose of the project was to extrapolate the materials and construction, not to match the measurements (who really knows what they were?). There were some other problems. You can't corset a mannequin and cinch its waist, so I had to pad the mannequin out at the bust and hips. I was stuck with the 22 inch waist.
I'm envious.
I would so love a tshirt with NIEOGARNIETA TYPIARA written all over it, with some classical painted ladies xD

Sargent is one of my favorite artists, and this "scandalous" portrait was one of the first of his works that I fell in love with. Haters are always gonna hate, but true talent and beauty always stand the test of time!

The story about the painting of the porcelain-skinned French lass and the famous painter was quite interesting and, as you mentioned, much like something we’d see play out today, where people are all too ready to let everyone else decide for them while we then sit back in satisfied removal to judge from our self-appointed lofty perches.

@Natia N.N yep! Portuguese has very similar sounds! In Russian you pronounce words in little another way than in Polish, even though many words can be similar.
Moral of the story: Any press is good, either bad or worse.

I bet you've spent more time translating this than making the actual video. And, obviously, a meme at the end only your polish viewers can understand, so you gave up :D

As a non-Polish speaker, what do those words mean that they are so hard to translate? I've tried learning Polish from Duolingo but stopped, currently looking for good lessons that will actually teach me the language, but I'm still a beginner so I don't understand at all xD

doesnt really make sense even with the explanation. fallen straps were very common at this time... it probably had something to do with them just not liking her very much. On a different note, Besame cosmetics does make a lavender setting powder, wonder if that would be good for pale folk

Loved this video and I have zero problems with you speaking polish. It's a beautiful language and the subtitles are really well done. I'd be perfectly happy to see more like this. It's amazing to see a dress that at the time was probably thought of as drab and common looking but that would match today's idea of high fashion that the super rich and fashionable would absolutely wear.
