I adore this painting, and the story behind it. I have seen it at least 3 times at the Met this year alone.

Madame X is so pretty. Her features are so elegant. And she does not have huge full lips. What a welcome change!!!!!!

Madam X is my favorite painting. I saw it in the MET, and was standing behind a tour group and heard the story that went with it. I don't think I would like it so much without the story.

A wonderful painting, as were the others you showed in the video. I've never really paid much attention to Sargent before, but now I'm now going to have a closer look.

Amazing. So glad that I found You and that story. It might soud a little crazy but recently something was pushing me to post some paintings on an Instagram. I was scrolling and scrolling and I clicked on Your Instagram and I saw Her... This painting has every single emotion. I am speachless... Just look at her. Her smile ironic, self confidence, a strong beautiful women. My God why no one ever make a movie about it??!! Anyway THANK YOU ❤️ and sorry for my english 🙏 Madam X is shining.

What I was taught in my art history classes in college was Sargent originally painted her shoulder strap fallen down off her shoulder while she was waiting for her lover ( not her husband ). The public saw it as overly-sexual and provocative, It led to a scandal in Paris society and ruined Sargent's reputation eventually making him leave Paris for London. He did change the painting and put the shoulder strap back on her shoulder, but by that time it was too late.
The painting of Gautreau by Courtois in 1891 with the fallen shoulder strap was Gautreau's embracing of the stir she had made in Paris society by the Sargent painting.

      When France wasn't morale.
Following and marrying peoples wife's, same as husbands having or using their wife's as hores.
I remembered a French president around 1890, very short man with beard bad for this and died in office

Wow, he was a much better artist than the others, no comparison. What was wrong with those people? Maybe because she was born in America, thus not 'really' French. 🐸 And he, born in Italy, raised in America? 😶🙂
Very informative video. Thank you! 😊
