I am Zimbabwean & the best way to explain Black Tax is the entitlement people feel towards your money largely because you share blood or friendship. It starts by simply leaving the village to go live in te city, everyone assumes you have money & starts coming with requests that need end. If you happen to leave the country it turns to downright toxic entitlement because the assumption is because you have foreign currency you have money. Parents never plan for having kids so end up parentifying their first born kids which inevitably continues cycle. For every person you help with black tax you create another 3 entitled dependants.
black tax is basically when u start working especially if u come frm a not so rich/poor family, u become the bread winner, anyone who needs anything comes to you. It's toxic becoz sometimes ur family does not understand that u hv a life too and expences to pay. Sometimes it feels like they make u the atm. It's toxic coz sometimes u even get bashed by ur family when u say u don't hv money. My older cousins parents will even take a loan and expect him to pay for it without asking him first. He is a dad of 2 kids, they don't put that into consideration at all. He is depressed as we speak and they don't even notice. It's good to help but not to a point where u can't sustain urself and some families are so ungrateful. It's worse when the 'breadwinner' gets married becoz they send less money home becoz they now hv a new family. the family starts hating the new wife
The worst is when they don't call to check on you and how you're doing but SUDDENLY remember your digits the day before pay day, it's actually worse when you run your own business coz they think you are always flush forgetting that you need to breakeven, restock, pay employees etc etc
“Black tax” refers to the tradition of “giving thanks” to your family for having raised you, especially once you graduate and get a job. There’s an expectation that you will build your family a house, (especially before your own), help with groceries, those are the main things. They have coined it “black tax” because many black kids feel it incumbent upon themselves to do all that or they are made to feel guilty and seen as ungrateful children.

Yeah black tax is real especially when you are a first born and what we call a breadwinner or you are the one doing well at home. They will blackmail you into doing everything. You will send your siblings to school , take care of them etc and you are obligated to do it. That's why I work hard so that I will not have to demand anything from my kids. The emotional blackmail that comes with black tax is deep. Fortunately for me my mom knows that I do what I can and when I want to and no demands. We have gone pass the blackmail but we have been there 🤣🤣🤣. I feel so offended by going to the gym struu 🤞🤣
If you want to know how black tax works watch Being Marry Jane - (Gabrielle Union) where she always had to take care of her niece and her babies, while the niece decides she doesn’t want to work. It’s basically the same concept.
Black tax is a term that describes a situation that is widespread in African households. Whereby the the first person to get a job in that particular family, or the first one to get a higher paying job finds him/herself forced to meet other family members' financial needs. It could either be siblings or parents' needs. It doesn't matter whether you still stay in the same house with your family or whether you've moved out, you're still expected to fulfill that duty. The reason why it's called tax is because that duty is imposed on you. It's never voluntary. If the family feels like you're not living up to their expectation as a hero, they have a way of making you feel guilty about it. Parents are the worst at using emotional blackmail in this regard.
"But daddy you told me not to waste paper because they cut down trees to make the paper, money is paper so it comes from trees.".... I never used that line on my daughter again
It's more like you're their pension plan because most African countries rely on pensions that are often not paid on time, if not at all. As a result, some parents, particularly mothers, feel entitled to live off the labour of the children they gave birth to. I believe this is due to the country's economic situation. By the way, JESU means Jesus in Yoruba. So this is Black tax from a Nigerian perspective, at least from the Yoruba tribe, but i believe in the rest of the tribe too. Hence, why u see us Nigerians hustle with that get rich or die trying, coupled with by any means necessary mentality. Cos they got soooo much mouth to feed or else hmmm! let's leave that there.

I think for other African nations that have high levels of immigration, that's what it is... black south Africans don't immigrate as much- just like African Americans... Black tax in a nutshell represents the burden that successful black have/those blacks that get gainful employment or achieve success and come from disadvantaged backgrounds have to bear...in that all their relatives view them as the one that "made it", and therefore they have made it too... So you become the family's funder
