Snow has a way of appearing with little notice, adorning Hawaiʻi’s majestic summits with a glistening, ephemeral beauty. Inspiration for a mele can appear just as quickly -but unlike snow, a composition’s beauty can live on forever. Part of this mele was composed within 10 minutes of
Kalani’s arrival in Hilo to sing for Hula Hālau ʻO Kamuela’s 2019 Miss Aloha Hula contestant, who received high honors for her performance. Kalani later added a verse and bridge to the song to complete it. ʻAʻahu Poliʻahu honors Poliʻahu and Lilinoe, the snow and mist goddesses of Mauna Kea. From time to time, the goddesses travel to Maui to adorn Haleakalā with snow - mirroring the journey Kalani’s mother made from Hawai‘i Island to Maui. - T. Ilihia Gionson
