    People in the comment section who are saying she's wrong and that "disabled people are not an asset but a burden" must be incredibly unaware of how many people are given the label "disabled." A lot of times, disabled means "different from the norm." They just can't always see it. A lot of people with ADD are incredibly creative and provide a lot of entertainment on RUclips. The list goes on. One example of a more immediately apapparent disabled person: the leading designer for slaughterhouses in the US (being more humane, efficient, sanitary) is autistic. She got into the minds of the animals to a degree "normal people" couldn't fathom and thus used their natural behavior to our advantage. I'll leave it there but there are so many more examples out there.

    i’ve worked with and along side people with all kinds of disabilities for over 20 years. I have seen the great value of the majority of people I worked with and alongside over and over again. And much of it came from the very things talked about in this video. The key was figuring out how this person’s unique situation (both the disability and the skills and techniques they had to develop because of the disability, along with their natural strengths) could be an advantage, and finding the work situations where they could use this advantage to benefit their employer.

    We don't necessarily need to be amazed at what seems amazing to us. Perhaps, it's our first time to hear or see it but life is rich with a lot of amazing things. People with disabilities are differently abled. They can amaze us with their diverse and unique lifestyle and experiences. Just get AMAZED!

    I have Asperger's Syndrome, which includes executive dysfunction (characterized by disorganization and having a hard time multitasking and prioritizing). A lot of the mnemonic devices, organization methods, and other things I use to help me through school have been adopted by classmates because they realized it helped them too. People who say that the disabled are useless, burdened, or less worthy of life don't know what they're talking about. Diversity is more than just skin color and body type. Neurodiversity is important too.

      Asperger's affects everyone differently. I'm sorry you've had such difficulty with it, but that doesn't make anybody's experience less valid. And this is the 21st century. We have skyscrapers and airplanes. We have houses with heating and air conditioning. We have easy access to hospitals and emergency rooms. Basic survival instincts are still there and still important, but they are no longer the main deciding factor on whether somebody or something is useful or not. If right now all of our cities and houses and electricity and Internet were to disappear, probably 75% of humanity would die in a few days. Does that mean all those people are worthless?

    Most of the time something sparks a need to create something, and it is designed. Then as it is put through scenarios adjustments are made. Thinking about how to design it for disabled people would come naturally soon enough. Speeding up that process might be good, either it would happen.

    Disability creates a gap between the needs of the user and the information system. On the other hand, accessibility is the ability of the system to accommodate the needs and preferences of each individual regardless of any physical disability. This session explains how this gap can be filled with the inclusive design of web systems.

      Would you say stephen hawking is such a "struggling animal" or John Forbes Nash Jr.?
      Both have/had forms of physical and/or psycological disabilities and yet humanity as a whole benefittes from their respective geniusses.
      I think we must look at the development of a society as a more complex process than simply running away from a predator.

      But we've removed mostly ourselves the wilderness, we do not face the same problems humans used to. We live in a designed world, why not design it for everyone?

    • @ghostfifth
      @ghostfifth 8 лет назад

      tell that to the people who want abortions. if you allow bad genes to flourish your only spoiling your own genepool. thats why nature picks off the slowest and weakest. yes humans are supposedly different. that can be argued. hawkins would be a struggling animal if it werent for everyone slowing down to bring him up to pace with everyone else as far as moving functioning. if someone werent caring for him 24 7 he wouldnt exist. nature. and then we wouldnt have the advancements we have now, is that a good thing or a bad thing? you tell me? whos to say whats good bad, right wrong? if they didnt exist you wouldnt know what your missing. would living in a world without them be better? maybe.
      have fun telling me im a bad bad man...lmao

    • @ghostfifth
      @ghostfifth 8 лет назад +1

      its not going to stop being a human world either. yea go ahead design it for you. i dont care. thats what got us global warming, population explosion, animal extinctions... fun times with humans. i love man but by taking away natures power to make us stronger weve become weaker, mentally and physically.

    Hmm. I always thought deaf people had trouble enunciating words because, though they could see the shape you have to make with your mouth to say a word, they couldn't really hear the subtleties. It's interesting to me, then, that she lost her hearing starting from age 10. I'm not gonna pretend to understand how these things work, but it's interesting to note.

    • @MonikaWoodstraveler
      @MonikaWoodstraveler 5 лет назад +1

      Fair. That is a loaded question. Is it fair that you had access to clean water today and millions did not? Is it fair that we are brainwashed to think just because a person does not have material wealth they could not possibly be happy?
      Is it fair that the lipstick you use may have been produced with chemicals that destroy the environment? Is it fair that you are making a statement without research to back it up?
      Is it fair that you are typing about problems instead of out solving those problems?
      The only thing you really need is food, clean water, and shelter. Maybe clothes depending on your environment. So maybe everything you have in excess of this you should just give away.
      I just sent 4 bags of shoes and clothing to Kentucky with a giant load from our other friends going there too. Their mines were shut down because of the global alarmists who benefit off of fake laws and psuedo-science. Time to quit worrying about what's fair and do what is necessary. Love one another, take care of the earth and everything in it.

      And who becomes the one who decides what a disability is?
      Are we not all differently abled?
      Do we give that power over or do we just keep aborting and euthanizing people not deemed "normal"?
      2007-2011 in the U.S. an increase of 28% more medications were given to children for the psuedo-ADHD diagnosis.
      In a similar time frame in the UK the medical usage went up 56%.

      you are talking eugenics and is impossible by nature. It's a hate crime to kill off an entire group of people. The nazis tried the same thing and it failed and wrecked the enviroment so. You all sprouted from somewhere so its all the like possible that all humans can have 'unideal' genetics. We can only trace ourselves so far back. So dont be so gross please. you never know what life will hand you. Also your lack of empathy isnt 'ideal' either now is it? well if only we can appreciate what strength we have when we got it. If you want to improve humanity so much then, get up off your lazy bum and find a way around the problem. Think of this thousands of years ago humans never thought things that are possible today were possible then.
      Why dont you start by finding a renewable safe for the enviroment fuel?

      Pixel Fyxe
      "Disabled" means you can't do things that most people can do.
      I have autism, which means that unless something is very intuitive I can't learn on my own, and I physically cannot handle loud noises and crowds. I also can't filter out little noises at night, which prevents me from sleeping That's a problem if I want to live in a city, which is where all the jobs I want are. That is definitely a disability. There is no way around it. Unless I want to live out in the country and settle for a job that I hate but is easier, I'm gonna have to deal with a world that is inherently difficult to navigate.
      However, just like the TED Talk says, having to adapt to a different way of interacting with the world means that I (as well as other people with disabilities) learn to see things differently, which leads to innovation.
      I don't think anybody's suggesting we cater to people in that we give handouts or anything. I think the point is that we should find ways to make technology all-inclusive, in a way that doesn't inconvenience anyone but could actually make things better for everyone. People with opinions and perspectives outside of the majority, can see things from an angle that will improve the lives of the many.
