I think Shannon didn't have the self-confidence to help the translation. That's why she refused to help in the first place because if you agree to help and fail, then it builds up the notion that she's useless. That's why she brought that line up when Sayid got angry and said "this was a mistake" after she couldn't figure it out. When people tell you you're useless and you try something and fail, your mind goes to "are they right about me?" or something like that...
Yeah, that's totally it. Poor girl... what we see in the surface hides buried feelings.
I love this episode. One of my favorites of season 1. No matter how often I've watched it, I'm equally as excited every time I watch it again. Great fleshing out of Kate's character . ...

I always wonder what could have happened if Kate had given Jack a false name on their first encounter. On one side, she was shaken, so maybe she just forgot. On the other hand, maybe it's a sign she's not monster, and trusted Jack with her real name in a place far away from her problems
I like that she never lied about her name on the island. Everyone gets a new life there hahah
We see her pause for a long second or two right before she tells him her name. So I feel that her honesty about it was a genuine decision, rather than being a shaken/flustered mistake.

Quando Kate estava segurando o avião em suas mãos, pareceu-me então que Jack começou a gritar com ela fazendo perguntas porque Jack começou a suspeitar que ela sabia algo sobre o acidente de avião. 21:00 I get it, I think the reason why I cry every time like a baby here is because I initially completely forgot about the episode where the plane thing is explained. Like, when I first watched the show. And then, one day when I went back to watch some of it again, I watched this episode and was confused.
I was like: Yeah! They NEVER explained that plane thing. Another one of those mysteries without payoff!" But then I finally came across that other episode again. (Don't wanna "spoil" too much, but I don't even know myself off the top of my head. Was it 21? 22? Or what? 20?) I don't know if I just missed that episode the first time or if I wasn't paying attention but it's a cute little character piece and explains everything so beautifully, I can really feel for it. It just sucks a bit that they would tell everything so out of order and with so much other stuff inbetween. I think it gets better when you're already familiar with the show, so that you remember most of what happened.
I'm just saying, if you pick up on every detail that's in the show AND you remember ALL of them until their final resolution..... That's impressive!
You know, that's one of the reasons that many people love Lost so much AND at the same time why other people dislike it. The level of detailing rewards the attentive and consistent viewer. But it scares the casual one. Even more so when so much happens in between the mystery presentation and its resolution. I absolutely love it, but I admit multiple views did it for me.

I think starting a LOST rewatch while you're in mid 3rd season and continue two runs together is a better strategy :) I know it's challenging and it sounds ridiculous but I really believe it helps both to enjoy the rewatch and to understand the later seasons better :)
I think a lot of us did the rewatch when a new season started, right? And that was really useful!
It's weird. Something's changed. For some reason when I turn on subtitles, it automatically switches to German. Which is understandable of course, I am German after all. 😅 But I'd much rather keep watching in English. I had to manually make that switch now for 4 videos, I think. And I don't know why that changes or how
....
Anyway, German is a harder language than English and the subtitles reflect that. When I read the German subtitles it does not sound like any conversation I ever had or could ever imagine having. 😅
But if they're automatically translated from either English or Portuguese, that's just obvious.
Your English subtitles sound completely natural. Almost 100% perfect ALL the time and I just wanted to take this opportunity and compliment you on that.
I think that's the case because someone puts in extra effort and makes them. Like... a real human, who well understands English... typing them. And adding that to the video. 😊👍
I would have never been able to watch this channel, if that wasn't so. Although, Portuguese is the most beautiful language in the world, a fact which I also was able to learn since then.

@@reatores Erm... Maybe... For the time being... I love how you care. But I must say, it's kinda hard to follow the German ones, harder than following the English ones. But I can of course only speak for myself. Maybe it did help a few other German viewers who DON'T understand English that well. And I wouldn't want to diminish the access for those...
So, I'm kind of indecisive here. I can also live with making the switch every time at the beginning. I kind of already got used to it.
We would need more feedback from more people than just myself.
I would say, maybe give it a few more weeks try.
If nobody says anything else up until then, I think it would be safe to turn them off again....

I think Shannon's reluctance to help with the translating is due to low self esteem. We've already seen Boone tell her she's useless and if you keep putting people down, they'll internalise these judgements.
The thing that annoys me about Jack is how he turned down Kate's initial offer to tell him what she did, but then continually acts like she's never even tried to be truthful with him. Saying things like "tell me the truth, just this once". Well she tried to be honest with him and he rebuffed her. So his sanctimonious 'baiting' of her later on really gets on my nerves.
Everyone on this island has secrets, things they don't want to tell the other survivors. I don't see why Kate should have to be completely transparent about her past when nobody else is transparent about theirs.

I get what you're saying, but I've another point of view: I don't know how many days they're already are on the island, but it has past more than a week and Kate still tries to lie to Jack, Sawyer and others, so I don't believe she was willing to tell the truth on day one. She said she could tell him the truth when they met each other, but probably it would be just another lie.
@@Maria-qn7xo Well, she was honest with Jack about her real name, so that's a good sign that she was willing to tell him the truth about what she did.
Not being completely honest with him about what was in the case seems different to me, as (without spoilers) it involves her very painful/deep feelings about someone that she loved.
And in terms of her not being open/honest about it with Sawyer, would you be?
He comes across as the kind of person who would use information against you/hold it over you. Kate's understandably too wary of people to risk being honest with someone who rings alarm bells for her.
But I do believe she wanted to tell Jack what she did, because they had already emotionally bonded when she sewed up his wound right after the crash.

If I was Jack I don't think I'd hold her arm or anything but I think I would still insist she'd tell me why the toy plane is so important to her. Asking me to help and trying to fool me after digging a body etc... I would also think I deserved some openness and honesty. I guess I wouldn't get an answer more than "it belonged to the man I loved" without getting physical like Jack but that would fairly and temporarily satisfy me I guess. I'd maybe ask more about it if we've developed a closer relationship on the island after a decent while.
By the way, I also think the guns were also important. So Kate's "we have a problem" line wasn't that far from the truth. They just realised some island person infiltrated them since 1st day of the crash. That makes opening the case and getting the guns more important and also the guns shouldn't be with the selfishly hoarding asshole con-man. On the second thought, if I was Jack I would question if Kate actually tried to hide the key from Jack for keeping the guns for herself instead of a toy plane. I might have questioned is she just acting like she only wanted the plane because she wants to make me believe she doesn't care about the guns. We as the audience know she really (and probably only) cared about the plane because of the flashback but Jack doesn't know that. He could be suspicous if she in fact wanted the guns.

I am biased because I love Kate. But yeah, Jack deserved to know, after all that. Possibily I would have done just as you described what you would have.

Sempre me irritou o jeito como o Jack haje com a Kate, como se ela tivesse obrigação de dá explicações sobre o passado dela. O "corretíssimo" doutor sempre me tira a paciência com esse moralismo dele (pelo menos nessa temporada).
Sim, acho que o jeito que ele trata a Kate (que tentou contar pra ele antes por que ela foi presa) é um dos pontos baixos do Jack, que é um personagem que eu amo...

Fala Rodrigo, recomendo uma minissérie de 5 eps apenas chamada "white house plumbers" com o Justin Theroux o kevin de leftovers e o Woody Harrelson de true detective, esses dois tem uma química absurda como dois detetives bobões nessa mini série, além do humor sagaz, se trata de um escândalo em watergare que aconteceu na vida real.

Also, the conversation when Sawyer tells Jack "however she talked you into doing this, she lied, brother" doesn't help matters.
Yes, we know she wasn't completely truthful about the case contents (although I don't think she should have to divulge such personal things to people she's only just met), but Sawyer's words stick with the audience and unconsciously influence their view of Kate. It's the same with everything that the Marshal said to Jack about her.
These are only the naturally biased perspectives of characters (who, interestingly, are all male, which I find very significant) and shouldn't be taken as gospel by the audience.

Now, maybe there could be a third person who knows about Kate: Sun. She is there when Kate talks about the Marshall who escorted her. Even if she walks away from them, she may have heard. She doesn't know what she did but she knows it was serious enough to have a marshal with her.

@@reatores Sei qual é, tb não gosto desse momento do 2x11, porém esse do 1x12 já acho mais compreensível ele ser rude por conta das manipulações dela... Desenterrar um corpo pq ela pediu, pra no final das contas pegar um brinquedo, é no mínimo irritante. Mas o Jack é chato, isso é inegável kkk
Lost é uma série que pouco se dá ao luxo de ter um filler por conta de vários plots que vão acontecendo simultaneamente, mas esse da Kate, olha... chega a ser até besta.
Hahaha eu até gosto desse episódio... mas mais pela dinâmica entre ela e o Sawyer na ilha do que pelo flashback.
Jack chatão, faz as coisas pra si também q nem todo mundo mas arrotando um moralismo que coloca ele num lugar superior de td mundo

This is easily my least favorite episode of the entire series, no razzle dazzle or tattoo included. The writers did Kate no favors in this story on island. She went from a strong woman with a plan and motive but failed to see that just mentoning what was in the case -a personal item-would have ended any problems. But then we wouldn't have an episode.
I actually like this one... The dynamics between Sawyer and Kate, and Kate/Jack is kinda fun. But I can surely understand you.
Esse pra mim é um dos primeiros episódios "inúteis" de Lost. Aquele famoso episódio que não leva nada a coisa nenhuma e que claramente só tava ai porque o pessoal era forçado a fazer mais de 20 episódios por temporada.
Haha, olha, não posso discutir muito, mas posso dizer q ainda gosto mais desse episódio do que dos próximos 3
