  • Paul 'scruffy' Martin visits Portmeirion which has served as the location for numerous films and television shows, and was "The Village" in the 1960s television show The Prisoner. Portmeirion is also a tourist village in Gwynedd, North Wales. It was designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975 in the style of an Italian village, and is now owned by a charitable trust. The village is located in the community of Penrhyndeudraeth, on the estuary of the River Dwyryd, 2 miles south east of Porthmadog, and 1 mile from Minffordd railway station. Portmeirion has served as the location for numerous films and television shows, and was "The Village" in the 1960s television show The Prisoner.

I came over to the UK from Canada last year to attend my father's wedding in Liverpool. After the wedding, I spent a week travelling around North Wales and visited Portmeirion on my way to Caernarfon. It had the creepiest vibe imaginable, in the best way possible. It was January, distinctly in the off-season, and the place was almost completely empty. The juxtaposition between the delightfully colourful and unusual architecture and the still, quiet desertedness of the place was palpable.
I had an audio recording of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" by H.P. Lovecraft on my phone, which I had been listening to as a bedtime story every night during the trip, and certainly, a story about a seemingly near-abandoned town, which played host to a hidden population of human-fish-frog hybrids, had a hand in priming my mental disposition regarding the place; a connection that was only accentuated by all of the mermaid sigils and murals scattered throughout the facade town.
Visiting in the summer, with all the flora in bloom and a much higher tourist population, looks like a lively experience. But visiting in the winter months definitely has its own unique feel to it, which I highly recommend.

We were there, again, last Tuesday. Love it. Our youngest daughters boyfriend proposed there in the Chinese Garden. You need to watch the TV series The Prisoner, it was filmed there. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Portmeirion never fails to inspire me, the colours, the imagery, and it’s feel as you walk around. We are hoping to go again this year, social distancing allowing.

I taught my 2yo son to say " I am not a number, I am a free man! " And I think he has carried that idea ever since. He 20yo now and will challenge anything that he disagrees with or doesn't believe is right. He would argue black was white, IF it mattered to him.

Be curious! Portmeiron and his so lovely and flowery cookware... Typically English and so beautiful (ullllllllllll). Such a prosody with the English beautiful accent. And such a nice accent of the presentator.

It’s Clough Williams-Ellis’s daughter who started designs for the pottery. I bought my first piece of my tea set at Portmeirion in 2012, and then built it up.

If this makes sense. I like the town of my imagination from watching The Prisoner. It had a different make believe feel to it. The real place is obviously very beautiful though

I knew, Sir Clough and there are at least two glaring errors here.
1.He was born in Gayton, Northamptonshire NOT North Wales (He was educated at Oundle School in Northamptonshire).
    2. He died at his family home 'Plas Brondanw' , Carreg, Llanfrothen, which is roughly five miles from Portmeirion.
I really do wish presenters would get their facts right.

A New movie of the prisoner shot in PortMeirion using Drones, Cell Phone camera's, (and instead of badges), people wearing numbered mask would be appropriate for the 2020's!
