  • In China you cannot survive a single business day without the WhatsApp clone WeChat. Since WhatsApp hit the 1,2 bn user mark lately and since I ask the audience during all my talks if they use WhatsApp also for business stuff, I wanted to discuss if this app from Facebook could replace E-Mail someday or at least tools like Slack (HipChat, Teams etc.). Here are my thoughts.

Christoph is an entrepreneur since high school. After graduating from St. Gallen University, he co-founded a mobile phone reCommerce company which grew from 1M to 31M in revenue in less than 5 years. To scale the business he wouldn’t just add manpower. Instead, he was obsessed with increasing individual productivity through latest online collaboration tools and new work methods.
This new digital setup triggered many requests from fellow entrepreneurs to support them in building the same environment in their companies. This is how the idea for Blackboat was born. A tech-focused company designed to help leaders increase team efficiency by leveraging cloud tools and fast communication.
Christoph is also a keynote speaker and he shares his experiences, thoughts and ideas about #EndOf90iesIT and #futureofwork via his RUclips channel and Facebook page.

For those not using with what's app, you need to check it out. What he is talking about here will personalize the way you communicate. The nice thing about the app is that you can communicate without giving your cell number, which was discussed here. Tying back to a shared document is a must.

Thanks Christoph. Got me thinking about how to speed up communication at our widely dispersed consulting group. Especially the tip about group size.

Very interesting! I too observe a couple of start-ups and NPOs, that use WhatsApp intensely for communications. Good point on not sending actual documents, but links to OneDrive / google drive! Finding a well accepted, good working alternative however, that both works for people working inside and outside of the organisation, is quite tricky.

Yep, tricky and you rarely find the perfect solution, choose the one that suits you most :)

Interesting video, indeed! Most companies that I know have SEVERE concerns about information security when using WhatsApp. Also cloud computing is strictly forbidden in most companies. Would have been good to hear more about those concerns and actual facts in business enviroments. Just my 2 cent of course ;-)

Great video as usual i use whatsapp with my team to send over job completion notes so i can get invoices sent for jobs as they are working across the country and in france. I also use it to send there jobs for and other info they need i find it helps as the older people where i work tend not to be able to use email and other apps on there phone but most people know how to use whatsapp. I also use it to communicate with suppliers (that I know well) like you said its easier and quicker than email and helps build a better working relationship with the supplier i find its a bit more personal and friendly rather than cold with the "professional" layout and wording.

I agree Dean, I use email less and less, WhatsApp is faster and less formal :)

Well said. I have been using whatsapp here in India to run my own organic food growing and sales business. I save a lot on creating a website and have a huge leverage at place.
    You do nice videos.
    Danke!

hmmmm, I just advised a client to implement Slack to their workflow. definite food for thought!

Thx for your feedback! Thats exactly the point... It's not about the tool its about how you leverage them! Whatsapp will atm not replace Slack or Mail... But just have a look how you can use it with freelancers & co.
Btw. i also shared some insights about how we use Slack:

no, you dont have to think about an email structure, a footer, a title and so on … just write your message, whether ist a polite form or not, because that depents on your communication partner and not on the tecnical protocoll the message will be deliverd. I type short and stupid emails with my friends al the time.
