- This campfire sure helps keep the mosquitoes at bay!
I ended up placing several dozen large rocks around the base of the fire as usual.
I know I hadn't when I made the video but I'd just gotten the fire going.
Hopefully my northbound train will stop in the siding sometime tonight.
Rest in Peace Mark, 'The Wizard of the Railyard.' your insights and humor will be deeply missed!
I didn’t know he had passed away what happened to him
@@randyspencer5937 It appears that Shoestring had a bad reaction to medical treatment he was under. Drug reaction. Left him 'scatter brain'ed, and he walked into a lake behind his apartment and drown. Do a search on Bing or Google under Shoestrings full name. There are a dozen press stories on it. He will be deeply missed by the RUclips Community and thousands of fans he had.
@@randyspencer5937 It's been since April when they found him passed away in a lake and I have yet to see any results or findings. Either way it's just horrible. RIP
@@wiseguy9202 yes I hate that happened to him may he rest in peace
The world needs more shoestrings. RIP Shoestring
I also can't ever enjoy a cold beer with a friend ever again ,but 36 years sober feels great too.
11 sober one day at a time. Best years of my life. And I remember it. By the grace of God. Thanks shoe man your the best.
How are you doing today I always love all of your videos and stories on RUclips on trains everyday they are good train videos and stories on RUclips
Same here. Boy i would enjoy a cold beer. But, i know all too well I would be right back where I left off. Thanks to the kindness of of G-d and the fellowship of AA; I have 22 years clean n sober.
How do you get to hobo a train about getting caught by police officers. I am not trying to be rude are nosey are personal creepy are anything. I just asking a question. I would like to hobo a train one day.
36 years too. Never regretted quitting. Not saying I don't miss it occasionally. Wake up every morning knowing where my wallet, car, and glasses are.
Red wing boots..awesome choice..damn comfortable boots and last forever..
I used to work at a super 8 motel. $8.88 when I first started, soon went up to $11.88 and everybody complained so bad.
Really like your stories.
I just can't get enough of listening to the stories of your life! Awesomely entertaining! Stay well and safe Shoestring!
He definitely needs to put his life story down on paper. There's got to be someone out there that would be willing to help him write a book
@@lorettashepherd. my exact thoughts!
I'm the same. I could sit across from a campfire and listen to him for hours. I respect his openness and honesty.
Hi Hobo friend, I've been listening. Not sure if I've ever commented. That was a scary story ,,,, get running boy. Sure glad you survived that ... and so much more. Peace and love to you, Kathy in INdy
You really had me laughing with that "machine man" routine at 29:06. Thanks String.

Alcohol is the worst addiction I ever had to kick. It will be 6 months now without a beer and I am 50 years old
It is definitely a bad addiction, I know. I am only sober since May 5 2021 but I will never go back
I am 68 yrs old
Hang in there friend!!!
Ya ive slowed down. Got to have a cold one everyonce in a while. Its the shits getting old. Time machine anyone?

Are you still sober?
Also, R.I.P. Shoestring 🕯
My brother I'm just so glad your clean and rid of the poison of alcohol, and you have tales, of wonderful story to tell, bless you man, I can hear the camp fire burning...... Yep, I remember the cold one after cutting lawns on a hot day, SO, now I drink Lemonade w/ a sprites of club soda .... cools a man right down.
Bo-String, don't take the golf ball thing too personal. There's a LOT of just plain ole bad golfers out there!
How to say there were trying to make a hobo in one
My dad was a high-functioning alcoholic, but the alcohol abuse eventually did kill him. Sadly, he never found the courage like you to acknowledge his addictive behavior and avoid drinking. He lost out on a son and his son lost out on a dad because of it. My mom stayed with him through all those years, but his death eventually lead to her passing as well just a few years later. I was in my 20s then. I'm 40 now and it still haunts me
I deeply respect your courage and making a daily choice to abstain and live fully
I'm sorry for your loss and the difficulties dealing with an addict. I hope you're doing well.
@@stanparker9556 thank you. I am doing better now thanks to some professionals who specialize in treating PTSD. However, the lost time and opportunities lost are sometimes hard to bear
@@macbuff81 I myself have had family members with addiction issues as well as personally having had to endure PTSD. I unfortunately didn't seek the help of a professional so I've made some mistakes along the way. But I'm also doing much better these days than when I was a younger man. God bless you brother, I sincerely hope that things continue to get easier and better for you.
@@stanparker9556 thank you for your kind and sincere words. I hope you have been able to find a resource to help you deal with the PTSD. It took me a few tries to find a person that understood what was going on. There is no easy fix. Like you, I also made many mistakes along the way especially when it came to my career and love life.
Thanks again for your kind words and positive vibes brother.
@@macbuff81 of course brother. I find it helps realizing there are others who have been through similar situations and have been able to push through it and piece their lives together. I've had a good long stretch of doing pretty well and no longer self medicating, but if things start to go the other way again I'll definitely look for a specific resource for the PTSD. I feel that was the root cause of most of the other things that came with it.
After a long aggravating day at work. Watching Shoestring videos helps me calm down and relax.
Worked in our Provincial detox center for 12 years and I can say you got it sir right "one is too many and a thousand is not enough " God give me the wisdom to know the things I can change and the serenity to know the ones i cannot ...God bless shoestring

I am glad that you explained about the cement rail ties. I was wondering about them because they are different than what you normally see.
I think you saved my best friend. It may have been about 6 months after I subscribed to your channel that he mentioned to me about seeing you on YT. Right after that he finally stopped. I think you had an affect on him that no one else including myself could.
The only thing that saved me 30 yrs ago, was to walk into an AA meeting. Seeing there were others like me.
Then was eventually able to help guys like what you were going thru, and helping them.
Thank god you made it.
Any. Way you can do it brother.
*I was 16 and would go to support my father at AA meetings. It was tough seeing him struggle so hard. He lived another 3 years. He was 43 when he died. I was 20. I learned a hard lesson and do not drink ever. Not even socially. It's been almost 30 years since he died. I hope you are hanging in there and still sober. I wish you the best*
This makes me want to just sit with you all night and listen to your stories Shoestring!! We got the good, the bad, and the ugly stories and it was awesome listening to them! Thank You for sharing them Shoestring!! Should have threw the dam golfball back onto the course! Great video!! B Safe... Shoestring Nation #1...
I appreciate his stories, too. And it was meaningful for me to hear his previous reflections on Jim Stobie. Somehow hearing the accounts of how other people cope with the circumstances of their lives brings greater meaning to our own struggles, especially while we are spending some of our time alone, or while suffering a personal
loss.
Yes it would be amazing to sit back and listen to the stories he has to tell
I needed to hear this.

As wild as I can be off the tee it’s completely possible it was an accident that a ball almost hit you. A slice or a hook off the tee can go 100 yards in the wrong direction.
Easily, have done it myself many times when swinging a long stick it's easy. Damn slicing-:(
Hell, back when i played in high school i could drive 300 yards out, but sliced 300 yards to the right too 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Greetings from Brazil my friend. Stay well and safe!

I'm sure it is erie to be in a railyard at night! The few times I've been in a cemetery at night sure was spooky!
Sounds like someone almost got a hobo in one🤪
Shoestring, you said something about "a cold beer after mowing the lawn" or something like that and it struck a chord with me. I don't drink much beer anymore but when I come in from mowing on a hot day I find that necking back a cold can of flavored seltzer gives 80 or 90% of the "cold one" satisfaction.
I can relate to this. It burns so good
My Dad worked at the Port Huron yard for 40 years. When I was a kid, the kids would catch out as the trains were leaving the yard. We were to "chicken" to ride for any distance. We would jump off as the train accelerated about 1-2 miles out of the yard. Fun times.
My Dad would always help out riders by giving them a ride to the store or giving them a few dollars. After 9/11, the Port Huron yard has a full crew of Federal CBP and Bulls that inspect every train entering and exiting the yard. There are many arrests due to the proximity of Canada. While the Bull is thick, there are many catch out placed just west of the yard that are not patrolled.
I still live very close to the yard. On a warm summer's night, with the bedroom windows open; train horns are rather peaceful and remind me of my youth and my Dad. We also have the luxury of ships navigating Lake Huron/St Clair river and their fog horns are majestic as well.
there's no good that comes in a bottle I've been sober for 15 years and never want to go back rip shoestring God bless your family
Your story @11:01 is frightening. It never ceases to amaze me how gutless some people are, even full of hero juice.

Hey Shoestring! Hope you are still feeling better. Good to see you out in the fresh air and rail
You should do guided hobo situations . Charge a nominal fee, say $100 a day and show folks how to do it.
Thank you for sharing Shoestring. My nephew just got out of the hospital after nearly dying from alcohol. Praying he’ll go to rehab.
WOW, Shoestring, what stories you have to tell and thanks for sharing some of them. That Casper, WY. story sounded especially scary. Glad you survived that night and got away from those people who may have wanted to injure or kill you. And I live in Albuquerque and glad you got some help here with your alcohol nightmares. I always wonder if you have had any encounters with wild animals or reptiles like rattlesnakes since you sleep in terrain where they live. Maybe you can share those stories with us another time in another video. Be safe out there, my friend, and MERRY CHRISTMAS from the 'Land of Enchantment.'
You should be proud of telling your DT story. You kicked your demon's ass.

I was surprised a flatbed car built in 1969 is still in use today! I guess railcars were built to last back in the day. Also, if you want to help your liver out, go to your local health food store and ask them what herbal remedies / concoctions they would recommend. Sounds like you need to take a multivitamin and some milk thistle every day.
I lived by a golf course once! We had golf balls hitting our cars and even landing on our 2nd story deck! Some golfers really are that bad! We were 100 yards from the edge of the green.
Worked as a groundskeeper for a few years, can confirm!

New subcriber here. Found Shoestring just a few days ago. I have ridden trains a couple of times. Back in the late 1960s and early 70s. My first time was needing to get from eastern Washington to Seattle after picking apples around Brewster. Can't recall where we caught the train ( I was with a friend ) but it took us to Everett. We rode in a box car. Had to cross the Cascade mountains, and I remember going through this long tunnel. When we entered that tunnel it was dry, sage brush and pine country. When we came out the otherside it was wet and green country. Rainy and cloudy. Don't know if it is true, but we were told that tunnel is the longest in the northern hemisphere.
The day in the life of a Hobo. Let's see, walking around talking to people who aren't really there, "us fans"!!!! Dodging a golf ball while checking out the local area. Then being spotted by the passing train. How you could tell, well there is no crossing, so he whistled when he saw the infamous Hobo Shoestring bucket. Then settling in next to a cozy campfire to have a can of chili and listen to nature!
I have definitely spent far worse evens in far worse conditions!!! Glad you are back on the rails Shoestring. Hope you have a great trip, you stay safe and looking forward to all the information you share during your adventures.
