Is scary how good he may have been if he had Messi or Ronaldo mentality.

SAF always played Rooney out of his position which in turn made him a better team player and was as much a defender as he was an outstanding attacker but one must take into consideration that Ronaldo was also there and dare I say it Ronaldo had the flair that Rooney lacked but he more than made up for it with his holdup play and I think that the only other young player that came close to Rooney was the famous goals that Micheal Owen scored! I think that my generation was the lucky ones to watch the original Ronaldo r9 to the one that they call the Freak who of course is playing for the wrong team but hey we can’t always get what we want! 😢

557 games, 253 Goals, 154 assists, 5 Premier League titles, 3 League Cups, 1 Champions League, 1 Europa League, 1 FA Cup & 1 Club World Cup all for arguably the biggest football club in the world. Wayne Rooney was a monster of a footballer. Forget all the off field newspaper headlines, Rooney was a proper serious talent. Yes he might not have had the longevity of Cristiano or Messi but for me he’s the greatest English player of my lifetime. Some would also argue that Rooney is a bigger United legend than Cristiano can ever be. And I agree with that. The whole world remembers the name Wayne Rooney & he sits alongside the very legendary Manchester United all time greats & rightly so.

"Chaos" really does sum up Rooney, doesn't it? And no I don't just mean his life or his career. He was controlled chaos personified as a footballer. The raw aggressiveness of his play style that you mention was genuinely mesmerising to me, somehow even more exciting than any fancy dribble or tricks, and I can't really tell you why. Maybe because when you watch him press every ball, wrestle with his opponents, win back balls, and so much more over the course of 90 mins without losing a beat, you can't help but admire his energy and passion.
And my god what a right foot he had. Imo, the accuracy of Rooney's strikes were on the same level of fantastic football as watching Messi dribble through 3 people or Ronaldo running faster with the ball than people without it. I'll be called crazy for this, but I think at his peak, on his day, Rooney could go kick for kick with the aliens.
But that's the thing, isn't it? He didn't stay at his peak, and it wasn't always his day. He didn't last long enough to achieve the things he might have been able to, and it is saddening.
But as a united fan my entire life, let me just tell you this much- nothing made me fall in love with football more than the days on which this man delivered his signature stunning performance.
Thank you Wayne Rooney. You may just be my favourite footballer ever.

His achievements as a footballer are notable and is his testimony to the game. Listening on RUclips to the managers who managed him and the players who played with him, all confirm his talent on the field. Those of us, old men like me, (DOB: 1946) remember special players in the English league, season after season and I can't remember a player like him. We can all wax lyrical about his behaviour, but listening to him speak intelligently and articulately nowadays, in various videos, about it all in a calm and honest manner is interesting. He did well for his clubs and he did well for England, and I've really loved watching him play over the years.

Some players have a lot of fuel in their tank. Rooney used up everything and didn’t have much left as he hit 30s. He didn’t take care of his body well and it showed.

As a united fan this is fucking awesome mate. Brought it to the bare bones and gave the man the credit he deserves. Can I just advise people to go see the documentary on our all time greatest midfielder Sir Bobby Charlton. I know Scholes is wicked but just fit the clubs history and all time English legend he has to be the greatest. I mean if Sir Alex says he is then I must be in good company. All best lads and lasses get home safe and tell your nearest and dearest you love them because tomorrow is not promised.

I am just so happy someone mentions Wayne Rooney and his legacy, because back when I was in 6th grade, I would get laughed out the school for saying Wayne Rooney is my football idol instead of say Messi, Ronaldo, Ramos, Iniesta, Neuer, etc.

I understand his actions wholeheartedly. I did similar things to deal with my feelings and I never had nearly a fraction of the amount of pressure and public humiliation that Rooney had. He's a human being

You never realise just how good he was till you see many of his career stats in front of you, it's ironic given how much he won that somehow everyone seems to have expected more from him

I'm and Arsenal supporter and Rooney is the one United player I'd call myself a fan of. Even though he terrorized us lol. Great player.

Rooney not being the lean and skinny player most of the world expects makes me inspired when I feel I'm too big or heavy to be a class player, truly one of the most inspiring players ever (I'm 183cm 83kg)

One of the best to put on the Red. From his debut to the end it was amazing. Even when it wasn't, you still knew you had a chance with Rooney on the pitch. We need to stop judging our sports hero's like they are some kind of Clark Kent. Bobby Moore died a long time ago and Sir Booby just the other month, after them the Kent's have been largely absent. Wayne came from a different place and different time. I smile when I remember Wayne and I think he probably does now too. The rest is just embellishment.
