    Great video! So happy you did this on hydroponics! I've only grown in soil but I've heard this is such an amazing method, especially for increasing growth and yields. Thanks so much for sharing!

    I’ve thought for a long time that people’s Roofs are wasted space and should be used to grow food, imagine walking down a street and seeing Greenhouses in every roof, collecting rainwater to irrigate plants. Then the water could be used a second time by running it down to the house for toilet flushing etc.

  • @joeb8167
    @joeb8167 6 лет назад +6

    Very cool. But... I imagine the infrastructure for the one location must go into the 100ks of dollars. Seems well worth the investment though to bring super fresh nutrient dense food to urban areas. Much better than big ag model of shipping thousands of miles degraded food grown in polluted depleted soil using tons more water.

    • @epicgardening
      @epicgardening  6 лет назад +4

      Yeah, definitely a large setup cost to get the greenhouse, the team, the tech, etc. I view models like this as the early pioneers of something that will become the "norm" in 10+ years

    • @nwinburn
      @nwinburn 6 лет назад +1

      They have raised over $31 million. the 100ks don't even come close.

    • @joeb8167
      @joeb8167 6 лет назад +1

      Assume $31M is entire enterprise beyond the single site in NYC, which given Mr. Bezos resources, pocket change. That said, major investment for sure.

      The dispensaries here in Vegas also use a similar type of hydroponic warehouse and the cost is in the millions.

      This has to be affordable for everyone, the country is so unhealthy. I say this because she mentioned selling to high end restaurants and now this facility is on top of a Whole Foods. Walk into a Whole Foods and you won't see much diversity unless you are looking at the lettuce. I will consider this a success when its attainable to everyone.

    People really, really, really should learn how to do something like this, of course on a smaller scale. Reducing The amount of time from farm to fork.. is an awesome concept. This would create a lot of jobs, industry and should drive the price of food down.

    • @epicgardening
      @epicgardening  6 лет назад

      That's my thought as well. I think we'll see a drastic reduction in CERTAIN types of produce due to projects like this.

    I really like the concept. With simplification it might solves some food problems here in water scarce Northern Mexico. What kind of plastic is used for the channels to avoid its leaching into the irrigation water? Would it be the same for an aquaponic system with fish?

    • @epicgardening
      @epicgardening  6 лет назад +1

      The plastic is likely to be an HDPE channel, which is the safest plastic for garden use

    • @brooksanderson2599
      @brooksanderson2599 6 лет назад

      !Gracias! I will try to find HDPE. The common plastic here is PVC but, its my understanding that it is not UV stable or safe for food and drinking water. !Saludos desde Saltillo, Mexico!

    Man I really love this Green house. Only thing I don't understand is , I thought whole foods was big on organics and natural food. That being said Hydroponics is not natural. it's the complete opposite. I mean don't get me wrong I grow hydroponically but don't claim organic. Hydroponically is a really cool awesome way to grow .

    Hydroponic veg tastes bland IMO, not a fan. That said, I can see the need for an application like this in some places--food deserts for example, but I am interested in growing my own for taste JMHO.

      omfug Not to mention that growing your own gives you certainty of the cleanliness and quality of the entire process. I’m NOT saying WFs would do anything unethical, but on that scale, there is no way to be certain
