Jacob definitely got his ass whooped a few times when he first met Cynthia. He even says "my PTSD" in a panicked voice when he realizes what's happening.
He has it all to be the antagonist, the strongest team, a team almost identical to the champion of our nightmares, the knowledge of a modern time trainer, a legendary pokémon backing him up with two phases to beat and most importantly, a theme song that everyone relates to "prepare your a**s".
The feeling of dread you get in your stomach when you hear this theme and suddenly realize who Volo's supposed to be the ancestor of. Genuinely one of the best moments in my playthrough lol

It was always in the back of my mind that Volo looks like Cynthia. And I found his gible and Togepi a nice reference. But it was only when I heard that piano that I realized the monster in front of me.
it’s even better when you realize it’s a remix of Cynthia’s encounter theme and in Pokémon Masters, Renegade Cynthia has her theme be a remix of her encounter theme and Renegade Cynthia uses Giratina.
I feel this. I heard the opening notes when it zoomed into to say he wants to battle. The rest of the song doesn't play if you don't click past that and I just sat there for a full min with the silence pretending I didn't hear that and that it would be okay. The mind games alone of that theme made me lose all confidence as I got smacked around for not being as over-leveled as Jacob here.
I'm overleveled right before encountering Braviary (75 - 80 cause exploring is fun) and even I'm still scared of him atm. Doesn't help that my team comp is ass

Cynthia investigates mysteries and legendaries, even into future games like Black 2 & White 2. So she may have time traveled and Volo could be her descendant. We can't also discount the possibility of Arceus pulling this twice. Cogita could actually be Cynthia.
The theme of fear echos through the ages. No matter where you are; past, present, or future . . . You will never escape the terror that piano strikes into even the toughest trainer's heart

Gold 3 years in the future isnt even a meaningful challenge and cannot plan against the legend of PIF's Red. Cynthea immediately before him Looks upon PIF Red and makes him beg "harder Mommy"

*Suddenly, as if being snapped awake by a vicious chill. The one who conquered the region almost single handed felt their blood run cold. They’d beaten everything that had come before without so much as breaking a sweat, they’d managed to hold their own against the world’s very god themself.. And yet.. This odd man was what finally caused them to become unnerved? No matter. The trainer’s ace confidently began to move forwards, they’d crush this man like the rest, they’d protect their trainer as they always have. And by the time the trainer realized what was happening, it was to late to do anything more than reach out a hand and call for them to stop.* *With a resounding thud, the remaining five pokemon shuddered as their strongest member fell, and there the strange man stood, confident. Their trainer rushed over to their fallen friend and looked on in horror. Echoes of past lives, countless defeats, and one, single person to blame… Then when they’d thought they finally escaped… It turned out they just stumbled across that same indomitable spirit again in a different time.. Those haunting notes… They signaled doom for all… A shame nobody else could hear them on the wind, a small prelude to warn them of coming danger.. Though, it wasn’t as if that warning would save anyone either way..*
While it's no secret that Legends Arceus has a lot of role reversal, with Volo being the bad guy, and Cyllene being a good guy for examples, one big inverse I think gets neglected a lot is instead of facing off against a large scale and very visible team, your main foe is one dude hiding expertly in plain sight.
Other things that I realized that are reversed are: in Arceus, you work in the galaxy expedition team, in diamond and pearl, you fight against team galactic. In Arceus, Kamado, prof Rowan's ancestor, is not very helpful and doesn't trust you for most of the game, and I don't need to talk about what prof Rowan does for you in D and P. And also, and I think this is more like a fun fact than a direct role reversal between Arceus and D and P, in Arceus you hide in the tall grass so pokemon don't spot you, and in every other main line game up until Sw/Sh pokemon of course are found in the tall grass

its such a good theme, i still love that it connects with the BATTLE start, if you wait on the "volo challenged you" text the music stops until you start the battle, if you click through it properly, the piano intro lines up with the sound of the BATTLE text popping up and then starts again, its SO GOOD
Yeah, I rather like that he leans more towards one of his other five Pokémon. Garchomp's here but there was more attention on Togekiss throughout the game.
Be honest, it would hav been so predictable and dull if Cyllene were there instead. I'm quite pleased our ultimate antagonist for this game was the Cynthia expy and _not_ the Cyrus one.
I love this reaction, the gasp at first recognition, the fear, the piano, the strings, the realization and terror. All of it makes for a hilarious pairing with the dramatic symphony of Volo's theme.
