A few important points for beginners like me: the removable-media app can only read from /media and /mnt directories. Also, Nextcloud snap works with root:root permissions. This means the parent directory of the external drive where the data folder is located has to have root:root as its permission.

Excellent tutorial playlist! I already watched parts 1-3 and built my setup. I have sdb1 mounted to cloud1 directory. Now, if I ever want to replace that sdb hdd with a bigger one, would it actually be as easy as removing the old sdb, then create partition to the new hdd, then copy the old hdd's files to new one and the push the new hdd in? Thanks, regards!
Awesome! Yes, but I would probably go about it slightly differently: Insert new HDD and mount it to a new directory, e.g. cloud2. Then copy all the files and simply change the data directory in the Nextcloud config to cloud2. That way you can first test if everything still works as intended while you could still go back to your old HDD if need be.
Great Tutorial. Hands down one of the best. I managed to install nextcloud on my server and access it locally. However after setting up the ddns with noip(.com), it just redirects to my router. What has to be the problem? Couldn't find any solution so far. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
@@TechGuides Yes. Or else I wont be able to access the site using a custom domain right? I actually can access using the url from another wifi network, but if I access from the same network, it just redirects to the router.
After changing my data directory and allowing nextcloud to search for external directories I get an internal server error. "The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator if this error reappears multiple times, please include the technical details below in your report. More details can be found in the server log." Does anyone know how to fix this?
You don't have to use your router to update your A-type record. Just use a small bash script on your server that updates that entry every day or so: www.cloudns.net/wiki/article/366/ Make sure to port forward 80 and 443 through!
Thank you for the video. I'm a newbie and only want to use Next Cloud as a backup at home. I did not do any port forwarding, DDNS Domain nor SSL Certificate - like I mentioned I only want to use it at home. Should I be worried about outside hacks? Do I need to turn off any port (not that I turned any on)?
"The partition you want to use must be mounted somewhere in /media/ or /mnt/. These are the only locations the snap can access under confinement with the removable-media plug."

@@TechGuides Yes indeed, thank you! Oh, I wish I had thought of that back then. Altering the table is indeed a simple and elegant solution :) as compared to having to restore from a backup. Really appreciate your advice!
oops, I meant "not so elegant" haha . Well I just googled it because I got stuck and wasn't able to alter individual table entries that caused the error.
You said that you need a somewhat fast internet connection. Can you please tell what's yours?
Yeah, I guess I would recommend having an upload speed of about 50mbps. I mean you can also have really bad upload speed - if you only access nexcloud locally that does not matter at all. I have 10gigabit (complete overkill but that's the only fiber plan we can get).
Hi, thkx first for your wonderful job. So helpfull. im blocked at 'lets encrypt': The command line returning this: 'Timeout during connect (likely firewall problem)'
An idea for this issue?
Danke
Thank you, sir, I have found you and subscribed
Awesome thank you for your support!
Can someone tell me What's the easy way to see the storage usage across all users.
And how can I make the SSL certificate work with Ubuntu 20.04. etc?
Thank You!!!!!!
Make sure to sub if you found this helpful ;)
wow, must snap disable and enable ?!!! i make same for my system nextcloud with domain name in config.php but not run. thank clips

I get "no such file or directory" when navigating to /var/snap/nextcloud. till snap it navigates but when i try to get into nextcloud folder it says this no such directory. on the side panel of mobaxterm nextcloud folder is present and i can navigate to config.php but cannot open permission denied! please help me only domain adding step is left for me. Everything works correctly.
Okay all was good until it wasn't. I was able to fuse my two hard drives together and I was able to successfully use next cloud with the desktop app and my phone app all connected to my raspberry pi running Ubuntu server. All of a sudden without touching it or doing anything with it it says that the .OCA data file couldn't be found and all of a sudden now my next cloud doesn't work. Anyone have any tips on this I have followed this tutorial and demonstration to the T
Hi, great video, I followed everything well until the step where you need to copy everything from default nextcloud data dir to the new data dir. The problem is I have no 'common' dir in 'nextcloud', I couldn't even find where 'data' dir is. Could you help me out?
Are you sure that you're using snap? Or do you just use the regular installer? The config file would be located under /var/www/nextcloud/config in a regular install
@@TechGuides Thank you! I have followed through and finished the installation. I have another question if you don't mind! Now I am using one single HDD for storage, hence I did not do the 'combining step' in your video. However, if I decide to add another HDD in the future, how do I combine the two HDDs without losing any existing data? What steps should I follow?
hi there awesome video, i have a linksys router and only accepts Dyndns and tzo damn , is there anyway can someone point out a solution thanks in advance
i wish that he was more precise, explained what he was doing, why and slower for a newbie like myself. Good video, though not user friendly.
ok everything is working untill i reboot the server i get error ubunto you are in emergency mode after logging in type journalctl
I follow all of your steps and they are successful until the end when I try the let's encrypt command. It has the "network unreachable" error. Anyways, thank you for your instructions.
Does anyone know the name of the program he's using as his fancy ssh client? Looks pretty nice even though i'm not a windows user.
Mobaxterm
Hi! Do you know how to unban an ip from the nextcloud snap instalation?
nice one thanks...
Thanks!
@@TechGuides You're right, that's the smart way to do it. Thanks! 👍
Great Tutorial. Hands down one of the best. I managed to install nextcloud on my server and access it locally. However after setting up the ddns with noip(.com), it just redirects to my router. What has to be the problem? Couldn't find any solution so far. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
Did you port forward 443 and 80 to your home server in your router settings?
@@TechGuides Yes. Or else I wont be able to access the site using a custom domain right?
I actually can access using the url from another wifi network, but if I access from the same network, it just redirects to the router.
After changing my data directory and allowing nextcloud to search for external directories I get an internal server error.
"The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator if this error reappears multiple times, please include the technical details below in your report.
More details can be found in the server log."
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Hi there! At 2:22 what program do you use?
MobaXterm. Its only for windows but I absolutely love it!
thanks so much! @@TechGuides
install snap next cloud ok but can not load web interface, please help
on my router i dont have user defined option for ddns then what should i chose
You don't have to use your router to update your A-type record. Just use a small bash script on your server that updates that entry every day or so: www.cloudns.net/wiki/article/366/
Make sure to port forward 80 and 443 through!
Hi May I know how to change the serving port of Next Cloud?
I dont have the "User defined" option in my router for the DDNS...
Then you will need to use one of the options that your router supports. I can also recommend no-ip
Dont worry, if you do not forward any ports to your homeserver in the router settings, nobody will be able to hack into your server :)
well done
Error: Your data directory is invalid Ensure there is a file called ".ocdata" in the root of the data directory.
"The partition you want to use must be mounted somewhere in /media/ or /mnt/. These are the only locations the snap can access under confinement with the removable-media plug."
@@troymayers5588 Hi my data is mounted on /media/ashrith/NetworkStorage yet it gives me the same error
@@tractionist Been fighting with this for couple of days now, seems to be impossible to change data directory if you have installed from snap, have to try the manual way now
@@Caranthir84 so i ended up installing on docker with ngnix proxy manager. works like a charm!
What software is that you are using with Kyrill in the top left? I haven't been able to find it.
Kyrill is my server's name. The software is called mobaXterm
@@TechGuides Ha ha. No wonder I couldn't find it. Thankyou.
I do not understand that after I installed SSL, my domain did not open (connection refuse). I need help
Thanks for the tutorial really easy for a beginner like me to follow. ClouDNS automatic update is not supported by two of the router I have. I got to use No-IP. I have questions, I installed it on Laptop, how I keep it running even after lib is closed?
Hey! You can also update your public IP on ClouDNS via wget commands from your server. Not sure how this works on no-ip
@@TechGuides depending on which system you use it you can either use you router and enter your no-ip adress that you want to update in you dyndns router settings or use their script for linux or install the dyn dns updater for windows.
hi, im setting up nextcloud as a intranet (meaning its not going to be connected to the outside web) on my office because i need its features. My question is do i really need the ssl certificates or am i fine without them? The problem is that i sometimes spend along time away from the office so i wont be able to renew the certificantes in time before they expire.
Thx for the help and great tutorial.
Hi! You don't necessarily need SSL. I simply recommend it when people access their nextcloud instance remotely, i.e. over the web.
Having issues with setting up lets encrypt. Its says timeout to connect (likely a firewall problem). I have forwarded both ports 443 and 80. I also am unable to access the nextcloud from out side my LAN. Any help on this would be much appreciated!
