The symbol on the shield of the Spartans is not an inverted V,it´s the greek letter '' λαμδα'' (spelled ''lamda'') which is basically the letter ''L'' and stands for ''Lakedaimon'' which is what the Spartans called themselfs and the name of their homeland ''Lakedaimonia'' .The official name of the area of the Southeast of Peloponysus is even today ''Lakedaimonia''.
Also ''οπλιτης'' (''hoplite'') means literally: '' he who bears arms/weapons''.
Half Life? Lol
He probably just said inverted v because that's how we see it. Not that it's literally meant to be an upside down v
Since the root world "hoplon" meant "arms", would you say that "hoplites" could be transliterated as "men-at-arms"? After all, the idea of professional soldiers and militias, pre-dates the Late Middle Ages Men-At-Arms.
@@GrimSoldat Yup,that works also as a translation.
Keep in mind, with the exception of the Spartans, the hoplites were not professional soldiers but "citizen-soldiers",specially in Athens. It was your duty as citizen,to know to fight and be able to do so,when your city needed it.They would go on with their various professions and only take up arms during wartime.
Same concept that the Romans had, before turning their legions into a professional army.

The Λ is a lambda the greek L, Sparta wasn't called in this way in ancient times the city was known as λακεδαιμονία [Lakedaemonia].
I thought it was always called Sparta and the land around it Lakedaemonia?
Sparta ia the capital of Lakedaemonia.
@@vincentmalab3289 No, the region around sparta is called Λακωνία [Lakonía], it is true that Sparta was the name of the city but the ancient toponym was λακεδαιμονία [Lakedaemonia]. if you take for exemple the first book of the peloponnisian war you wil find that Σπάρτη (Sparta in Attic and modern Greek) is present only 6 times, the more predominant because the citizens of sparta were still called Λακεδαιμόνιοι [lakedaemonioi] because the term Spartiatoi meant something different from just a citizen of Sparta, the Spartiatoi where the only class in the city-state to have full rights and citizenship were as a matter of fact the aristocracy of the state (the famous 300 that fought at the Thermopylae )

I wanna see a video on Switzerland's military. I find it interesting that every man serves but when he leaves the military he keeps his service rifle just in case the country is invaded. I also find it interesting that their government pays for them to come back yearly for a friendly shooting competition to keep their marksmanship skills up.
It might have something to do with their stoic belief in neutrality and the fact that the banks and vaults of Switzerland probably hold most of the worlds money, gold, and or secret things that certain people in history may or may not of smuggled and or bribed officials to hide away.

Did any of the Ancient Greek kingdoms like Macedon have Hoplites or something different?
CLONE HD well yeah they had a similar unit called pezikarioi they were the heavy infantry. All though the term hoplite is referring to someone who has taken up arms, he who is armed .The shield was called hoplon so we can call hoplites even the warriors of the 1 B. C. E if we take that into consideration. Have a nice day
Maybe you are refering to the macedonian phalanx used most notably by Alexander the great, Alexander's father Phillipos was held hostage in thebes and there observed and studied the holy band wich was at the base of the phalanx. The major difference betwen hoplites and phalanx was the immense long spears
Makedonia used Hypaspits, they used the Aspis instead of the hoplon, that was heavier.
But DONT confuse hypaspists with pezhetairoi, those were pikemen and used an even smaller shield, the pelta.
