During Japanese invasion on Malaya, the Ghurkhas already empty the village by taking all the villagers to somewhere safe before the Japanese landed. When Japanese landed on Sabak Beach, only Ghurkha who fought and none of them survived. And British, they run to Singapore and then fled back to England. Now there's no one to defend Malaya from Japanese, so the Malays defend it themselves by applying guerrilla warfare.

Gurkhas are deeply badass. Their selection exam is apparently one of the toughest in the world and even SAS members (the SAS having its own ridiculously hard selection exam) said their fighting ability was astounding. There's a story from India in which a young woman was attacked by a group of about 30 men. Her rescuer happened to be a former gurkha and by the time the police arrived they found him calmly smoking a cigarette whilst 3 of the attackers were unconscious on the floor. The others had ran off.

He got up in the morning thinking he has not been detected until he began to walk and tripped- they had tied his laces together without him noticing

    • @EvilGremlin100
      @EvilGremlin100 5 лет назад +90

In basic training, i was told a story about gurkhas in some jungle based conflict, they'd crawl right up to enemy soldiers stood on guard at night without being detected and cut their throats, the only thing that determined whether that soldier died or not was how his boots were laced up. The gurkhas would stroke the boot laces to see if they were laced how the brits lace their boots up. If they were, that man was an ally and lived. If it wasn't, he must be the enemy, so he died.

An old friend of mine fought alongside these guys in Malaysia. And reckoned they were the toughest, bravest fighters he ever knew. ( He himself went on to become a Selous Scout ) He told me a story of a jungle patrol, where they came across a bamboo hut in the jungle. And suspected that there were rebels inside, but not knowing if there were civilians as well they did not want to open fire without scouting it first. One of the Gurka soldiers volunteered to check it out. He drew his Kukri held it in his teeth and with a primed grenade in each hand simply ran up to the hut and dived through the window. Apparently he confirmed that it was full of commie rebels because moments later he came flying out of the opposite window with only a bloody Kukri in his hand. Within seconds the grenades detonated, blowing the hut and rebels to smithereens.....

@andrew ansyon andrew ansyon wait what are you high on? First, I don't know why I am talking to someone hiding behind a fake name. Still, when you are over your blinding pride as well as hatred, Kumaon kingdom barely held barely any powers on its own region in early 19th century because of absense of a central power, even Rohillas had outrun it, so it was anyway no match for Gorkhas. Had Gorkhas attacked a hundred years earlier, it would have been real hard for them to go on across as easily as they did in 1790's. And, Gorkhas did commit horrible war crimes from Burning and looting of villages, selling people as slaves, forced labour and undoubtedly killings. It is noted by several historians, backed up by eyewitnesses and, anyway its merely 200 years, even today you can hear people making allusions to the cruelty of Gorkhali, so much so that English cruelty appears mild. And, by the way, which Rajput Clans from Rajasthan came and conquered, I would love to know. As far as I know, Gorkhas managed to hold the annexed lands for a paltry 20-30 years before British took over, and before that, they were barely a power anyone would have taken seriously. On the contrary, Chand, Pawar and Katyuri Dynasties ruled for centuries, defeating other kingdoms and sometimes each other throughout those years. In fact, Khas living in Kumaon were elevated to Rajputs by Chand kings themselves. And by the way, Chands were indeed outsiders, but by the time they had a secure hold of Kumaon, they were so assimilated that practically there was no difference and distinction, much like how Aryans are called Indians despite being outsiders.
Gorkhas were brave and world acknowledges it, including me, you are merely tarnishing it with slow wits.

My grandfather worked with a man who was in Italy with the British Army during WW2, he had apparently fought near some Gurkha's. Upon arrival, the British were told to never, ever trade their worn out boots for a pair of German boots (they wore gaiters over top, anyway, so you couldn't tell the difference from a distance). Turns out, when the Gurkha's would go on night patrols, they had a habit of crawling into the German lines to slit the throat of every other man. It's hard to tell one uniform from another in the pitch black, so they would feel the soles of the boots, as German boots had hobnails. So to avoid being inadvertently killed in their sleep by roaming Gurkha night patrols, Tommies made a point of wearing the boots issued by His Majesty's Government.

Late on in the Second World War, as the Allies were fighting their way across northern Europe, a battalion of Gurkhas was asked to provide some volunteers for a mission behind enemy lines.
The unit was paraded, and a staff officer explained the mission: “It is absolutely vital that you need to go in and secure the position. We only expect light resistance from the Germans. You’ll be dropped from an aircraft at 1200 feet.”
The Gurkhas’ own commanding officer then asked for volunteers to take one step forward. About half of the men stepped forward.
The British officer was surprised. “I thought the Gurkhas were supposed to be the bravest men of all,” he said to the Gurkha c/o. “And it’s not as though we expect this to be a particularly dangerous job.”
“True,” said the Gurkha officer. “But half of them have just volunteered to jump from 1200 feet. Perhaps you should tell them they’ll have parachutes.”

They sign up for 5 years and are known for harsh treatment to disserters. The Ghurkhas look very fit but they are disarmingly relaxed, friendly and happy guys. They used to sign up for 15 years, now 22 years and dissertion is unheard of.

the difference between elitist and non elitist behaviour.
elitist behaviour is usually rooted in a very deep lack of confidence and need for approval.
for example treating deserters harsh means you have the belief that if one does desert you need to inflict fear on others so that they won't follow or something similar. even if its something different. it is always connected with what some person thinks about what you are doing (lack of confidence). but if you have 100% confidence in your cause/group/organisation you don't care what other people think and are able to truly enjoy yourself independantly of people deserting or not (just as an example) :)

Some human beings, or groups of human beings have mastered the art of ignoring the fear of death in the same way that you ignore the discomfort that you feel while running on a treadmill for a long period of time. The gurkhas mastered the art of ignoring that fear, but I guarantee you that it was present because they were human.

I remember as a young teenager driving down the M6 with my Dad when we happened upon a military convoy made up of Gurkhas in jeeps, some of which were standing up in the back and out of the sun roofs. As we passed the rear vehicle my Dad beeped his car horn as I was glued to the window, the Gurkha driver of the vehicle looked across, saw me attempting a salute (Dad was former Royal Engineers so I had a slight knowledge of salutes and ranks etc) and was given a salute back. He beeped his horn, and as we passed each vehicle in the convoy, the drivers and occupants all saluted back.
I've met many a Gurkha over the years. Some working in security, others still in the army. I have the utmost respect for every single one of them, and am absolutely disgusted that the British government refused to grant most of them British citizenship and allow them to settle in the UK once their military service had finished. I was over the moon with joy when that was over turned in 2004 and they were allowed to apply to stay.

At first the Gurkhas had a bit of trouble keeping up with the taller British. But when they reached the immediate edge of the village, they gave a cry and charged in ahead of the Brits. After the village was taken, the Gurkha's rifles were found on the ground at the edge of the village proper where the Gurkha's had dropped them and gone into the village armed only with their knives.

My grandfather fought alongside the Gurkhas and saved one of their commanders. Because of that they gave him a kukhri and throwing knives....pretty cool

Is there a place where I could get the script for this video? I have to do a prepared reading exercise for school about something I'm passionate about and the way these videos are put togetherand the layout of facts (and the fact that I absolutely love khukuris) would be sure to give me a great mark (I would cite this video as a source and most likely bring a few subscribers to this amazing channel)
