Great video. Question when adding the initial sculpt how have you managed to not leave any finger print marks on the armour? Its an issue I frequently encounter
I'm getting ideas on what to do when I want to customize a Gundam kit or Frame Arms Girl/Megami Device kit. I wonder if it's feasible to add plastic pegs (for example, spare plastic from runners/sprues) to the clay and drill holes into a figure/kit so (with a pin vise) that you can take off what you're sculpting (for example, taking off armor). Or if it's possible to do a peg/hole system for whatever you're sculpting. Either way, you would have to put a layer of something over what you're sculpting so that the clay doesn't stick onto the figure just yet. Perhaps saran wrap or sculpting over a zip lock bag. It would help when you need to disassemble something for say painting separate parts different colors (because I hate masking). Is this feasible or am I off my rocker?

Without seeing it I can't really help. So I'll cover a couple things. When taking plastic figures apart I use boiled water, be careful. Added bonus, part of the the duplication process should be able to produce a positive that you can mold/cast against to make removable gear.
It's a great point you bring up! I've thought about it before, but there are a lot of little parts that make up any articulate figure, and to cast each part would not only be tedious but without a pressure pot I'm afraid the parts wouldn't be the best quality. Hey AC, Quick question, do you do any sketches before you start sculpting or do you work on improvised inspiration as your'e sculpting? If you do sketches can we see some samples?
Hey! I do both! For this current wave of MOTU figures I did concept sketches of the direction I wanted to go, and for the most part the finished product reflects those. I don't have any experience with He-Man figures (which is about to become apparent), but I do have plenty of experience with anxiety, so I was wondering if you've tried to find a way of non-destructively (or near enough) disassembling the figures so that you can make molds and duplicates of parts to go really wild with the customization without worrying about going through a too many classic He-Man figures or blowing a ton of money on the the new "classic" figures?
Added bonus, part of the the duplication process should be able to produce a positive that you can mold/cast against to make removable gear.
It's a great point you bring up! I've thought about it before, but there are a lot of little parts that make up any articulate figure, and to cast each part would not only be tedious but without a pressure pot I'm afraid the parts wouldn't be the best quality. It is something I'd like to try one day!
Do you know how to make a helmet for your action figures 6 to 7 inches
What kind of helmet?
@@AdamCrohn any kind of helmet just one that could go on the action figures head
@@Xeno-mv That's really vague, but I'm sure I can do it.
@@AdamCrohn ok thanks but for specifics a helmet like halo or a knight
What is the water. Material that you use
In this video it's just water, but now I use Aves safety solvent. I'm actually doing a giveaway for some on my Patreon next week! www.patreon.com/adamcrohn
@@AdamCrohn ok thanks
In 1-3 do you dry brush the sculpt or you just sit there and don’t dry brush the sculpt
Hi, what do you mean by "1-3"?
@@AdamCrohn I for got I mean like hours
@@BeauMan2 If you're talking about cure time before you can paint the apoxie, I let it cure over night then sand and carve what needs to be cleaned up, and then do all my painting last.
@@AdamCrohn ok got it 👌🏻
@@AdamCrohn I also mean like when your done sculpting
What color was that use on the Armour
I mix all my own colors. The base was cobalt blue 👍
Genial bro 👍
Do you use a heater gun or just let it dry by it self 🤔
A heat gun won't make it cure all the way through. So I just let it sit for at least 4 hours before I sand or mess with it 🤙
This is awesome to see you sculpt like that! Have you considered becoming an official action figure designer? :)
Thank you! Glad you dig it. I'd love to be one but it's a hard job to get. Put in a good word for me!
hi newbie question can i use a polymer clay? instead epoxy?
Hi! You have to bake polymer clay. So you can't use it on plastic figures like this or you'll melt the plastic when you bake. You can use clay by itself.
@@AdamCrohn ouch... thank u for reply :)
@@seanjohn14 Any time!
@@AdamCrohn hi last question.. can use a milliput also?
@@seanjohn14 I've never used it because it seems really messy, but I know a lot of artists like it.
hi AC, just wondering what type of paint you using?
Hey! I mostly use Testors Model Masters acrylics, but I throw in some Vallejo, Citidel, or P3 from time to time. I do a lot of paint tips and tutorials on my Patreon if you're interested. Thanks for the question🤙
Random question, what do you clean your tools with? Incredible work on the detailing of the armor. Appreciate the simple tutorial as well!
Thanks very much! For sculpting, since I'm using Aves apoxie I use Aves Safety Solvent on my silicone tools.
@@AdamCrohn Thanks for the fast response. How about the metal sculpting tools? Aves Safety Solvent as well? Thanks again!
@@EyeSurpri Solvent or I just scrape them clean.
@@AdamCrohn xD Thanks!
Do you do custom work from drawings for a fee?
I do! You can pay all at once or break it up over time on my Patreon.
@@AdamCrohn What is your fee for a 4” tall figure in black and white?
Hey AC, Quick question, do you do any sketches before you start sculpting or do you work on improvised inspiration as your'e sculpting? If you do sketches can we see some samples?
Hey! I do both! For this current wave of MOTU figures I did concept sketches of the direction I wanted to go, and for the most part the finished product reflects those. I usually try to always have a concept worked out before hand, and if it's a pre-existing character I always have concept art or sketches of some kind to work from. There are those rare times I just jump in and see what comes out! I post all of my concept designs and behind the scenes stuff on my Patreon, www.patreon.com/actoydesign
Great!
You do commissions by chance?
Hi, I do! I have a large waiting list, but I'm always available. Email me adamcrohn at y mail dot com with pics and details. Thanks!
@@AdamCrohn Awesome! I sent you an email.
@@8-bitBishop I didn't get it. Are you sure you sent it to the correct email?
Thank you for giving us a glimpse into how you mod your action figures! Question, what tool did you use to put the details into the small piece on the right side of the chest ( small holes and lines)? Was it just with your Xacto blade? It was so clean and precise! Really dug the "reveal" shots at the end, too, especially the blue waves/splashes!
Thank you so much for this message! Glad you liked the video. A lot of the silicone sculpting brushes have different sized steel tips on the opposite ends. Almost like ball tips. Really good for making indentions like that. I'm pretty sure I linked to some in the description 👍
Anywhere to direct me to events on toy sculpting courses ? Or communities.
Hey Anthony! Other than local art and sculpting classes near you, and other RUclips videos on various channels, I post behind the scenes tutorials on my Patreon from time to time. On RUclips I like Ace of Clay and Tony Cha.
Getting motion sickness watching this.
I thought the holidays were for hauling.
Amazing I make my marvel figures with real clothes and repaint there skin with a flesh tone
is it safe to use without gloves?
It what safe to use without gloves?
