Furthermore, a large proportion of the UK population feels deceived and the country remains deeply divided on the issue. How did it come to this? Thomas Johnson, a French-English filmmaker, and Eric Albert, a journalist from Le Monde London, set about to understand better British public opinion.
They also interviewed politicians who were involved in the Brexit decision, such as Nigel Farage, an extremist in the Leave campaign; Tony Blair, the former British Prime Minister; former French President François Hollande; and Michel Barnier, European Chief Negotiator for Brexit.
This documentary reviews the lies, fake news and political blockages that may have contributed to the referendum result. It also delves deeper into the workings of the “Leave” campaign and the complex and rarely cordial relationship between the United Kingdom and Europe over the past 50 years. What does the post-Brexit project look like? Could this political earthquake threaten both the unity of the United Kingdom as well as the stability of Europe itself?

What is not mentioned is that the EU was about to put a stop to offshore tax havens, finacial fraud, money laindering etc.
The City of London could not have this happen, ie the banking establishment. They could not afford an audit by OLAF.
This was the true reason for Brexit. So what if an entire nation suffered because of it.

Before all you people chatter on about the EU go compare the last 25 years between the USA and the EU, you will be shocked how Europe has declined in almost every economic metric, IMF Figures not mine. So much so that even the poorest States in the USA are better off than the French and they pay lower taxes. If the EU had been a success and improved the standard of living across Europe it would not be in the terminal mess it in. But it has been a dreadful failure.

Cornwall received €650 million EU subsidies over a timespan of six years, since Brexit.... £one million from Westminster as "compensation" for the losses of EU subsidies...
Cornwall (still is now, but without EU subsidies now/subsidiesed by the EUs infrastructure fund, to support poor regions) was one of the five poorest regions in the EU, from which the four poorest where ALL in the UK.
Guess what, Cornwall also voted leave.... AND still claimed for EU subsidies AFTER Brexit 😳 in Brussels.

Rather sad, most of "social /kids/youth projects" had to be closed down, because ALL of those projects were paid by the EUs "social/regional fund", as the British Gvt obviously doesn't bother about its own children.

Yes and my last firm produced industrial machinery, sales went up after we left Brexit because the pound devalued so much and most of our customers were outside the EU. However, if you worked in a FMCG business your costs will have gone through the roof and your sales down massively. FMCG makes up a far higher proportion of UK output than any Machining production. That's why we have measures like GDP which overall is down 4% after Brexit.
Thats not because of Brexit and you know it. The flu epidemic that closed the country down destroyed the economy and it still hasnt recovered.

I think it was later than the 1960s. In the 1960s UK governments were building a lot of infrastructure projects such as the motorway system, and these tended to push up UK wages. Plus, the Wilson government introduced exchange controls, which limited people's ability to exchange Pounds or Deutschmarks.
The famous UK TV series about British workers in Germany, "Auf Wiedersehen, Pet", was made and set in the early 1980s. That's a more realistic date.

Living standards were rising; car ownership rose from 40% to 60% across the decade, and home ownership rates rose too. The average house cost just £4,328 in 1969.
The UK economy underperformed relative to its continental rivals, and this led to trade deficits and devaluations. There were various reasons for this. We had to pay our war debts to the USA, debts the defeated and occupied countries didn’t have. The Marshall Aid money we’d received after the war had been spent on current consumption (e.g. the NHS) rather than investment in plant, machinery and infrastructure as in continental countries. The continental countries all still had large rural populations, which only started moving into their cities after the end of the war (France was 30% rural in 1945, compared with 2% in the UK).
Rather than British workers going to work in Germany, the larger tendency in the 1960s was for people to emigrate to Australia. The “Ten Pound Poms” reached their peak in 1966, with over 250,000 UK emigrants.

As someone who is pro-EU and from Denmark, I am wondering whether Brexit also happened because Labour supported Leave and half the Conservatives supported Leave and the right wing supported Leave. Even Cameron who suppossedly was in favour of the EU was always sort "above" the rest of the EU leaders. Nobody of significant impact in the UK truly supported the EU. It is quite incredible that almost half of the population voted to remain.

I can assure you that in no way did Labour support leave. People voted to leave because, whichever way you cut it, the EU is incompatible with the British notion of sovereignty and self-governance, as seen clearly through the lens of immigration and fishing quotas. That is not to say there there were not benefits from EU membership, but those were the reasons. It also doesn't help to call the voters thick, old and racist.

No that's not correct. All of Labour wanted to remain, as did nearly all the Liberal Democrats, as did most of the Conservative party. Unfortunately the voters including a big proportion of traditional Labour voters did not follow this pattern, they bought into the xenophobic immigration rhetoric and the other lies about making Britain great again.

@@littlepantherlp The principal difference is that the EU need not accommodate the English. They used to get one special treatment after another and still it was not enough. It became known under the term "exceptionalism". This suited the Little English perfectly as they consider themselves to be the chosen ones, especially after a few beers.

Cameron thought he could bully the other EU members into making concessions. He could not and that made Britain look weak. It did not work. As it turned out, Brexit made the EU stronger and Britain considerably weaker.
Says who? How do you measure that assertion? Two back to back once a century do disasters has meant that the country is at a standstill since March 2020. The EU won't exist for much longer because German demographics and no Russian gas means the country is going down the tubes. Germany can't pay for the rest.

Brexit has made me so much more aware of being an EU-citizen than I was before. Being able to live, work, study and travel freely throughout the Union is such a fantastic thing. It baffles me the British actually choose to get rid of this. How could one actually choose to have less rights and freedoms? I have even become proud to have 'European Union' on my passport. Last month I travelled to Rome and seeing EU flags flying at so many magnificent historical buildings, I felt so proud to be part of this Union.

You have to remember that the People of the UK were massively lied to for 40 years by the Rupert Murdoch lead right wing press and polititions. When things went wrong itvwas always the EUs fault. As he was growing up I told him he had over 20 countries to live and work in. Now he is grown, and seeking citizenship in another European Country that has not thrown away their European advantages.

Brexit is the result of Britain never being IN the EU. Britain wanted a trade union it could lead. Failing to succeed creating its own trade union, it joined the common market out of spite. British politicians used the EU as a scapegoat for decades: it was always the fault of the EU or of the French. This corroded the EU-UK link that was not very solid in the first place.
On the whole your video does not cover the REAL motivations of the small number of influencial Brexiters (Brextremists). Why did all these Farages, Johnsons, etc did all this for? You don't cover this! Anti tax evasion laws? dogmatism? Sheer hatred of non English-speaking nations. In 1973, Britain flatly abandonned Commonwealth countries and it will abandon them again at the first opportunity.
I have to say, we, in the EU have learned our lesson and except for a drastic change of opinions (both qualitatively - supporting the full EU project and quantitatively - not a few percentage points to decide UK's future) and motivations, Britain will never join the EU.
Good analysis. During the last months i have changed my mind - from a, the UK has potentially a chance to join again in perhaps 50 years, after they have solved their basic problems to a, it is better they stay out, and perhaps they will never be able to meet the entry conditions again.
Perhaps people considering the situation should more often think about the UK EFTA membership period!

I am a British immigrant to France. I've been here for 20 years but after the brexit vote I applied for full citizenship. Ibelieve totally in the European Ideal and can't understand the mentality of people who demanded the right to........ "Lose so many rights"
To this day most enthusiastic Brexiteers still don't understand what rights they have thrown away. Just look at some of the ludicrous comments on videos such as this. They just repeat sound bites they pick up from right-leaning media, not understanding that the very same media is acting on the interest of those funding them, not the interest of those ultimately voting for it.
At the time you moved you were not an immigrant, You were a Community Worker with free rights to work and move as you pleased. You are now a French citizen.

We are immigrants with (slightly) more favorable preconditions, as we get a work-permit *_automatically_* and fairly unbureaucratically, and have the right to search for work during a three months period in each member-country.
But immigrants we are (just like Nordic citizens are, since the mid-1950s, when moving between between jobs in Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland. It was a good inovation back then. It remains a good idea today.)
That is your perception which is how is used to be. Thanks to the EU open borders the EU member ex-nation states ,which used to have control over their own borders and decide and impose their own laws , no longer exist in the EU. I'm a Brirish immigrant in germany; at the time of the referendum I was getting my professional qualifiation here and wasn't sure what would happen next; thankfully the German government was extremely helpful to British citizens and helped us retain our UK citizenship when we took on German citizenship.
What many in England never seemed to have noticed was that our 'friends' in The Commonwealth had demanded that we drop the word British many decades ago. When the UK objected we were told either you drop it or we leave so we dropped it. Because many British people are ignorant of the history of the Empire they are totally ignorant of the fact that much of The Commonwealth despises the UK for their actions during the days of Empire. There are politicians in these countries that are demanding reparations for the economic harm we caused them. Some in India have demanded that a condition of doing any trade deal with the UK should involve the UK paying reparations.
In an effort to try and convince Brexiteers that the promises made are coming true we have signed two very one sided trade deals with Australia and New Zealand that will bring real harm to people who live in areas that voted strongly for Brexit. If you visit a hill farm in the Lake District or Wales then you visit a sheep farm in New Zealand you will quickly realise that even with shipping costs those UK farmers don't have a hope of competing. Now there are government ministers who have gone on record as saying that our farmers produce a better quality product and we will be able to compete in other markets. Again if you go to New Zealand and order lamb at a restaurant at the first bite you will easily recognise that what you are eating is of a much higher quality than what you get when you buy New Zealand lamb from your local supermarket. Guess what the Kiwi's are already selling that high quality product in the markets our government ministers feel we can compete in and they have lower transport costs and they have been selling there for years.
For the whole time the UK was a member of the EU we sent trade delegations often with members of the Royal Family around the world. We were targeting the same markets that other EU countries were but we couldn't get deals then while those other countries could so what is going to change now?
Let's not also forget that all the so called red tape that was stopping us doing business was the same red tape that applied to every other EU country and yet they could get the deals while we couldn't why? The answer may well be that on top of all the EU red tape central government in London added even more red tape. This has become very noticeable since we left as more and more UK businesses complain about all the extra red tape they have to fill in now we have left. That can't be blamed on the EU but the mandarins of Whitehall.
Has anybody noticed that as Brexit has lurched from one failure to another many of those who were very prominent have now gone very quiet. In the documentary it kept commenting on the fact that even though things have not gone well the British have kept their sense of humour. However there is another British characteristic that is not often mentioned and it is a dark characteristic. We in the UK have tendency to become very angry and bitter to those they feel have lied to them. They won't blame themselves but rather look for a scapegoat. If things keep going badly do not be shocked to see the very media that lied and were strongly in favour of leaving begin to try and distance themselves from their recent past and look to blame others for fear that the British public will turn on them and chose to get their news elsewhere.
Now there were some of the Leave campaign that said if it does go wrong we can always go back based I'm guessing on that now disproven lie of 'they need us more than we know them.' However I think Stammer this week echoed reality about us re-joining, because it would not be as easy as even Remainers like to make out. First the EU will treat us as a new applicant rather than a returning member. So the conditions of re-joining will be very harsh, we will have to agree not to try and gain the concessions we had before. We will probably have to make a financial deposit to pay for any losses in case we change our minds again. Then come the huge hurdles as laid out as a basic requirement to now join the EU, we will have to first of all accept the EURO as our currency and will have to join Schengen area. The second is against the very anti-immigration lies that were told in2016 the second id agreeing to give up one of the very basic identities of sovereignty.

1) The ability to pass our own laws? we already had that just as every EU country does. The only rule was that we couldn't put other EU countries at a disadvantage as a result of those laws. Now we can pass the law but if we want to do business with any EU country we will have to put that law to one side and of course if that law puts any EU country at a disadvantage they may pass a law that puts us at a disadvantage with every single EU country.
2) The ability to negotiate our own trade deals? we could already do that, did you never noticed all the Australian and South African wine in supermarkets or the New Zealand lamb in the freezers? Now we have a trade deal with Australia and New Zealand that puts our farmers at a significant disadvantage.
3) The ability to create more red tape for British businesses than they ever had before.
4) The ability to scrap all the laws that aligned with EU laws? You know laws that stipulated the length of the working week and the amount of paid holidays you were allowed to have each year. Laws that are now under threat with the Retained EU law that should be in force by the end of this year. Well at least if they enact it and the company you work for scraps or cuts your holidays next year you can always console yourself that you got your sovereignty. Just like all those ferry workers who were replaced with cheap contract workers, an action that would have been illegal under EU law, but they have their sovereignty.
5) The ability to spend hours sat in a traffic queue while we wait to get all the required stamps to go on holiday in the EU? or the ability to stand in long queues at airports as we wait in the non-EU citizens lines?
So tell us all what this sovereignty actually is that you claim Brexit was about.

A fund that allows small and medium businesses access to funds to carry out research into improving their products without having to pay that money back. Only to have it replaced with having to pay for that research out of profits or bank loans which if granted has to be paid back with interest. That same fund that in the final round that we had access allowed UK companies to receive a little over €7 billion in grants while the UK only contributed €5 billion. That same fund which now has just over €70 billion available to all our EU competitors. Tell us all again who has the interests of the British public at heart again. That same UK government that said funds previously granted to the UK by the EU would be matched only for them to decide we didn't have the money after all.
I'd love to hear what you think we have gained that is at least equal to what we had before.

If what you say is true, why then are so many people trekking all the way through the various countries of the EU from Africa and the Middle East to effectively break into the UK? What I mean is, why are they not stopping in France or Germany.
On the face of it, the EU seems the better prospects for migrants as it has freedom of movement and freedom to work anywhere in the EU, if legally settled in any other EU country. Does it not make more sense for them to become naturalised in Greece and then have the choice of the rest of the EU to live and work?
The answer is that the UK is a more attractive a prospect than the EU countries for whatever reason. Why that is the case, I have yet to find a definitive answer, but people outside the EU clearly fancy their chances better in the UK.

In 2016 Brexit was supported by 17 million people in the UK - in 2023 Brexit is supported by over 400 million people in the EU.

It seems that those that voted to leave the EU are those who still believe that the UK is a power to be reckoned with. By following the US, the UK government seems to want to gain some favour from the States in terms of trade and so forth - however successive US presidents warned the UK government that the use the British had for America was as a member of the EU. Should Ireland reunite as one country - should Scotland eventually leave the UK - one can only suppose that England and Wales will in some way find it expedient to join the States, maybe in the same way as Puerto Rico is part of the US.

The trade deal with the EU is mutually agreed, just as all other deals. Yes, we accept EU marks and papers on their goods - but so do they with ours. And it makes little sense in the UK devising new and complicated markers and papers when we have been accepting EU ones for decades.
However, the major difference is we were forced to accept these before with little to no say. And also forced to accept we could not go elsewhere for free trade.

Rubbish you don’t repeat a referendum whether you like the result or not. Had remain won, it would have been minimum 10 years likely a lot longer before another referendum would be allowed if ever. No affirmation was required, it was clear as day leaving the EU meant leaving the single market and customs union and all that entails. The efforts of remainers to stop democracy, or to keep the UK tied to the EU as closely as possible only emboldened the Brexit side to succeed. Sadly we haven’t had a real Brexiteer Government to carry it out.

Did you know that before we could have an EU referendum, mp’s had a vote in parliament. At the time, the House of Commons was split 50/50 between Remain and Leave so you would have expected the mp’s vote to show a similar result. In fact, the 2nd reading of the EU referendum vote went 10 to one in favour or having a referendum. This meant that approximately 275 Remain supporting mp’s voted in favour of the referendum but when the result didn’t go the Remain way, they tried every way possible to overturn it. Who would have thought that mp’s could be so dishonest? - Answer - Just about everybody in the country who isn’t a politician.
I am going to highlight Corbyn was a Brexiteer and the majority of labour constituencies voted for Brexit too. Clement Attlee didn't want to join the common market and the Labour party wanted to leave the EU in the 80s with out a referendum.

@15:43 as someone who has two white English housekeepers in Abu Dhabi, ever since 2020. He's absolutely right. Both of them are from the Northeast as well, and don’t want to even go back. A few weeks ago, they told me they didn’t even want to use their 30-day annual leave in its entirety, and that one week of flying back to the UK, to visit family, was more than enough. Unlike the Filipino staff, who tend to fly back for 30 or even 40 nights worth of annual leave.

I doubt there will be more violence in the North Ireland. Its more likely that Ireland will reunify. The people in the North who were behind the violence and their culture are dying out, the younger generation see the benefits of EU membership and what they have lost by leaving. The way the voting was pursued was the problem and the reason we left because the government knew England was the only count that mattered. It should have been done by country percentage as the 2 nations all voted to remain but it was most of England where the populations are the largest that won over the vote.
If you take the 4 percentages of each nation to Remain, add them up and divide by 4, we would still be an EU state, as, it adds up to 52.9% but the government knew that was too risky so set it as population, as they had riled the population of England up as they always do.
England is 85% of the population of the UK. Many Americans think the Electoral College is unfair, because it reduces the influence of a populous state like California relative to a less populous state like Wyoming. But if California had 85% of the US population, the Electoral College would be completely indefensible.

Post WW2 immigrants from Ireland, the West Indies , Africa and South Asia were welcomed by employers but not by the general public. That also applies to political exiles such as my parents. The same happened post 2004 with Eastern European entry into the EU where the UK government declared an open doors policy due to labor shortages. Those EU migrants were in the UK legally. They were not made welcome once the Tories came to power and particularly post 2015. There was and continues to be a lot of nasty racism evident, particularly in England though rather not in London which is very much a cosmopolitan international city.

@@gzhang207 I, like many other “Leave” voters made up my mind about wanting to leave the EU at least 10 years before a referendum was even talked about. So, whatever Farage said made no difference. What do you have to say about all the Remain politicians who voted in favour of the EU referendum. They must have thought that leaving the EU wasn’t such a dangerous choice that they would vote against us having a referendum.

@@Mesamedusa I’m not reproaching Remainer MP’s for giving the people a chance to have a say on EU membership, I’m pointing out the hypocrisy of them saying yes we can choose, then trying their best to overturn the decision because it wasn’t the one they wanted. Remainers talk about lies told by Johnson and Farage but a hell of a lot of Remainers lied when they went to the polls and didn’t accept the decision of a vote allowed us by so many Remain MP’s.

Look what happened was the Statue Quo throughout in Europe, after Mr. Trump was elected had lost some its power to make the rules. Of course, a great deal of the business owners were happy being in the EU because they were doing well with the way things were and did not want to see a change, since it would have a affected the bottom line in a negative way. You can debate whether Mr. Trumps policies were good or bad all you want. However, they upset the Status Quo in the US and worldwide. Some of the strengths of the EU as well as in the U.S. were that they prospered because of cheap labor. Now people in some countries were complaining the jobs were going to immigrants. So, they were angry and now saw a chance to limit the influx with outside workers which in turn may provide jobs. The businesses now would have to pay more to workers which again would affect their bottom line. Most likely when Covid hit all the plans that would have contributed to smooth transition were affected such as trade deals. It was never given a chance to succeed and as a result it appears to have been a failure. Now it is a battle between the Status Quo and real free trade to gain power. Since Covid ended end every country has experienced difficult economic times. So now the people who had their power center weakened have seen a chance to bring up all this alleged evidence to show all the flaws in leaving the EU to regain their power. It is all just a power struggle between the people who had all the power and want it back and those who want to reduce it. There is one problem with You Tube or Google or any modern information search engine. People can produce mountains of evidence to support their point of view. For example, the Moon Landing, for quite a few years there was not much challenge to whether it occurred or not. However, over the last 30 years or so much information has been produced to the contrary that now whether it happened or not is up for debate. And just like this video is trying to point out all kinds of proof is being brought forward to show what a scandal it may have been. , We have reach a point in time where almost anything can challenge or manipulated to support a point of view. I do not know why I waste my time when issues are discussed because now anyone can say almost anything about any subject and make it appear it is a fact. As a side bar, the tape is clearly leaning toward a leftist point of view. I am not saying if that is good or bad ,just stating an observation.

The interesting thing about Brexit is that most British who voted for it did so to regain sovereignty especially to keep out immigrants arriving en masse to the EU, whereas most non British UK passport holders voted for it to keep out European immigrants. With hindsight, the latter were the sole winners.
