3 years on, British still talk about Brexit. In the meantime, the EU moved on and turns out, it doesn't really need Britain.
You are totally right but obviously a lot of Brits thought that they were more important than they actually were.😅
But as a whole, the EU would be even stronger had the UK stayed. But the UK is just left in ruins so to speak, while the EU continues to go about it's business. I am sure it is harder to get product and people into the UK then it was before. But again the EU has the rest of EU to trade and visit, the UK has no one in that regards.
I can appreciate their willingness to stand alone, but not their shortsightedness and straight up lies to it's people. Even children know fundamental math and common sense situations. You can not leave your friends and still be expected to have all the benefits you had before. 😂

The Scottish and Northern Irish people voted to stay in the EU.
The Scottish people were forced out of the EU by Westminster which has 533 English MPs and Northern Ireland was allowed to stay in the EU that gives them access to the EU single market.

I'm not happy about Brexit because I'm retired in España. my uk generated pensions are subject to the rate of exchange, perhaps freezing. Since 2016 the rates have been terrible...they hover around 1.10-16€ nothing like the pre-brexit value....For all brits in similar circumstances Brexit is a deserter...Plus there is no telling what a British Government will legislate in the future....Brexiteers shot themselves in the foot when they thought that freedom of movement and all that went with that didn't apply to them......they screwed it for everyone..

There has been no Brexit. If ypu understood Parliament at all you would know that. Very few people do understand it, even fewer admit they font understand it and none of consequence challenge it's illegal rule.

Ben Habib seems to have missed that the purpose of the EU was to reduce regulations by agreeing a common set of rules. He wants a world where all the rules are in the UK's favour, missing the fact that other countries have to agree to them for them to work. He wants a win lose dynamic with our trading partners when only a win win compromise is possible.

Notice the same rules for travel in EU for EU citizens are the same as the current fake brexit rules for UK citizens. Notice both UK and EU citizens only have 3 months visa free travel in EU...after which both have to apply for a work permit and prove they can support themselves. Even EU citizens can’t work in another EU country without permission or a visa. Just like Brits now.

The EU is a political union forced upon member states in the 90s. I say forced as its constitution, its creation from the EEC was voted down by both the French and Dutch. They were ignored, a new constitution drawn up (same as before mostly but now a different name, the Lisbon Treaty) and that was not given to the French and Dutch to vote on.
The Irish did and they too voted 'NO'! They were ordered to vote again.

Unfortunately people with no money listened to people with all the money that were quite well off and had nothing to loose. Nigel Farragh is doing quite well on his E.U. pension given to him by an organization that he didn't believe should exist. Immigration is at record levels despite the promises. The NHS is a mess and everything people were told that they'd benefit from has not materialized. Like they couldn't figure out that they were being lied to. We deserve exactly what we get for thinking that we are somehow superior to other nations and don't need them.
I should imagine that swing parks and the rate of knots the EU were allegedly closing them has been affected, mibee the daily mail or the sun would have some evidence on that , then again perhaps not

Brexit has been a great success, just not for the UK. Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Luxembourg have all experienced huge flows of inward investment. The French stock market has gone from half the size of the UK's to larger than the UK's. European countries have also strengthened economic co-operation between themselves, and the Bloc's engine is running better than ever in the absence of the UK. There is also the mismanagement factor of the government in the UK to deal with as well
Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands all have higher inflation than the UK. They all didn’t give as much during the pandemic, to it's citizens and they all are lacking tens of thousands of workers, because after the pandemic many people changed their careers.
The agenda is to blame Brexit, but the reality is, most EU countries have worst problems than the UK, but they blame the pandemic and war. The people with an agenda in the UK, who never respected the democratic decision to leave the EU, blame Brexit.

I left UK after 15 years before Brexit in part because I saw an increasing hostile attitude against European. I never thought Brexit would have a referendum but when done I thought it had a chance as I saw many people blaming foreigners. I am very sad that happen and as I was working in the health sector I saw poverty and I am almost crying when old friends are telling me poverty is on the rise.
Everyone blame the minorities even though they usually do not make enough people in the country to be the ones at fault. Meanwhile I have seen plenty of the British people themselves abuse the social systems that GB has to help people. But instead looking at the enire picture it is easy to blame the immigrants who are doing the most laboring jobs for very little money. Let us blame the man off the boat who is working in the shipping yards instead of the people who are actually making the decision that actually matter.

Sadly it is easier and more convenient for many to blame immigrants and refugees for the national woes. They are blamed for housing shortages, draining the NHS, bleeding us of social security.
We have a housing shortage because of deliberate underinvestment in housing since the 70’s . Funding of the NHS and staff levels have more effects on waiting lists than immigrants. As for Social security, it’s easier to blame the cost of feeding and housing immigrants a drop in the ocean less than 1 % when compared to the cost to the country of benefit fraud, housing fraud, tax evasion, tax avoidance to name just 4. Far easier to blame immigrants

True .I Used to work 12hrs shifts at home care ,(no benefits), my husband 12hrs also. No benefits till pandemic.I heard one of my British colleague say how disgusting was a lot of foreign people getting benefits..but the most of staff there wasn't British.(so ,we are no taking locals jobs ) and almost foreign my circle doesn't take any benefits.. But I understand that British are not comfortable with immigration there.I'm very grateful for the opportunity and experience..I'm out uk 2 years now,happy to back home and missing UK also.
The pound was valued at US$ 1.50 in June 2016 at the date of the Brexit referendum. Today the pound is US$ 1.19, a currency depreciation of 21%. Thanks, Messrs Farage and Hannan.

@@philiproscoe2968 I know many people who voted leave, 65% did so where I live: one voted leave "to stop black people from coming into the country", another one voted leave as he was upset "at the EU imposed banana and strawberry regulations", most other ones I personally know voted leave to stop all kinds of immigration, for which they squarely and solely blamed the EU. Some said the EU was Germany's fourth reich. Despite what you say, the vast majority of voters had no idea about the EU at all, aside from they heard from the likes of Habib, Farage, Johnson and the right wing rags. The most Googled search in the UK the day after the referendum was "what is the EU". Talk about sheep...The negotiations with the EU proved that even our politicians had absolutely no idea what the EU was all about, hence the "we hold all the cards" and "cake" mentality, which was proved wrong at every step of the way, starting on day one.
So does anyone who thinks that the rest of Europe is doing well.

Ireland has done very well for itself by being the EU, you must know that. Ireland is much stronger as a member, like all member states are, it allows them to punch above their weight. That is just one of the many things Britain has lost by exiting the EU in such a hard way.

Uk's current gdp is still at 2019 level. It's the only European country whose gdp hasn't recovered. Even poor countries like Romania have and on top of that it's the only European country in a recession. It's neighboring country the Netherlands, who brexiteers claimed would be hit the hardest by brexit, grew by 3% in the last quarter alone. Brexit was a scam.

A pay model of "You get 116 on days you only actually work rather than 100 including those you don't" assuming 25 days holiday, 8 Bank Holidays, 5 sick would be income neutral for the individual and transparent.

@@danielwebb8402 I must have imagined the civil service contract I was asked to sign on promotion, which took away 5 days paid leave and expected me to work an extra hour a week, so effectively meaning I paid for my own pay rise. Lucky I didn't sign it and lucky a class action tribunal deemed them to be unlawful, because you can't treat established CS as new entrants just because you have promoted them and moved them to a new office. And this happned BEFORE brexit. Even the CS don't play with a straight bat anymore. Everyone is in a race to the bottom.

To be fair only 37% of the electorate voted Leave, versus 35%. 28% didn't vote. And given how undefined Leave was, they didn't all vote for the same thing. We had Farage ranting on how rich and free Norway was outside of the EU before the vote. Now many Leavers say a Norway deal is really Remaining. As for voting in Johnson, I agree, I shudder to think how anyone would. But we have First Past the Post, which masks the will of the people. The majority of actual votes in that election went to Remain and second referendum supporting parties, as compared to Leave parties.

So Ben didn't get the Brexit he wanted. That's the problem, everyone knew what Remain was, but not every Leave voter voted for the same type of Leave. There never was a majority for a single type of Leave, that's why the leavers were vague and contradictory. As soon as anyone tried to define it, it turned out that most leavers didn't want it either. An informed vote on a single defined Brexit should have been held. Of course Leave would have never "won" if they had defined it. As such we all lost.
Separatist groups like the Brexiteers will always have an advantage by arguing for some imaginary future that will profit everyone without cost while not having to prove anything, while the defenders of the Status Quo can only defend on the basis of what exists now which will have its own obvious failures. When separation fails as with any ideology the ideologues will claim you have failed to follow the ideology far enough. This what the separatists in Quebec did claiming essentially they could retain all the benefits of the confederation while being in an even better position to extract consesions from Canada tried and they only failed by a small margin. They even claimed that Canada would protect their dairy industry in the Canadian market if they separated and they could not only retain the Canadian dollar but they would have 50% of the say on how it would be managed. When they succeed in the divorce they whine about how bad the other side is like someone who demanded a divorce and is now complaining about losing bedroom privilges.

The referendum was a simple majority vote.

My bet is that, in 20 years time, the UK will apply to re-enter the EU: with no rebate, no opt-out, and with the Euro. And they will also need to properly learn usage of the metric system and stop driving on the wrong side of the road!
There is a total of 43 countries that drive on the left not all are Commonwealth countries (Japan for instance)! I’m finding it hard to believe the UK will last that long and will find it very,very hard to be accepted back into the EU after endearing themselves to so many who live there. One of the biggest fallacy’s was presuming Britain would stand taller as a single country rather then being one of the leading powers within a united europe.
The world is interconnected and there’s no such thing as true independence as we all work within given rules.
A large proportion of the EU laws were actually devised by the UK; the Irish issue was “resolved” by the concept of an EU and the open border making it a separation acceptable to the powers that be; a united EU, with the UK at the helm with former foes France and Germany, is a great counterpoint to the Other large powers: USA, China and a blossoming India… let’s not even begin to talk about the economic strength a united EU brings.
I’m a dual national English/German and love both countries and as a financial futures broker, who was involved in the markets since the early 90’s, have seen how the closer economic and social connection benefitted all and sundry. Such a tragedy that brexit occurred which harmed the UK and the peoples all over Europe.

The EU isn’t perfect and there are quite a few things that need change. However changing from within has always been a better choice then sitting on the outside as a 3rd country. Why stop at the EU, why not leave NATO or any one of the many 100s of alliances that make a small little country part of a greater group. The UK had a pivotal place within the EU and had any number of special deals that had been worked out, with the UKs help, over the past 80 years and thrown asunder due to local concerns of the conservatives losing votes to the far right. The far right was just that that England fought so valiantly against during WW2.
Things will literally get worse as the UK, as do all the g20, will see the combination of lower birth rates and the demographic shift lead to crisis levels of understaffing by 2030.
Back in the early 2000s my bank did a study on how Germany needs at least 8 million immigrants by 2030 to keep the pension system and Labour requirements at a functional level. That’s why they accepted 1 million Syrians and now a similar amount of Ukrainians. Immigration is a difficult political subject and the crisis that required massive refugee movements made the immigration politically viable.
People need to understand the bigger picture and not just look to the edge of their own personal soup bowl.
The UK is better off without being in the EU, long term it will show.

It’s not just about employment, but the loss of freedom which Brits enjoyed as part of the EU to work and travel within the EU for as long as they wanted.
The UK has record low unemployment levels at 3.5%, check out the likes of Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece etc - high unemployment and a lack of jobs, I would rather be in the UK which has plenty jobs available no it is outside the EU than in the EU with no jobs.
@@californiadreamin8423 That was great for the other 27 EU members who used the UK as a job store but it was actually bad for the UK as the access to cheap labour drove down UK wages, the freedom of movement attracted crime gangs, slave labour and sex workers and turned many cities into crime hubs.
I forgot to mention too that the EU workers often sent their earnings back home so the UK economy was even losing out as well as the tax man.
Since Brexit we now have the lowest unemployment since the 1950's wages for the lowest paid increased as companies lost access to cheap labour and had to increase the pay to appeal to UK citizens.
Freedom of movement works well for poorer nations with high unemployment as they can find work in better economies but there is always the negatives which the UK suffered many of.

As a Yank living in the UK (dual citizen), the refusal to have another Brexit vote is shockingly undemocratic. US States have constitutional referendums all the time for the specific democratic purpose of letting the voters override undemocratic laws ... even including prior referendums that have become unpopular in hindsight. The key point is that referendums only are democratic if you allow them on a regular basis as demanded by voters, not the political overclass. Ironic that this basic democratic fact is lost on the Brexiteers, whose stated goal is to become more like the USA!

people can vote differently as they age. I would have been more in the center in my 20's (UDF in France) but over time values such as sovereignty, protecting our identify, preventing ethnic/religious tension/ splitting the country, has led me to vote to the right (FN, reconquete) And I think it is a pretty common phenomenon. I think Britain did great in exiting the EU. Look at Japan, they have 0 growth for decades, salaries are low resisting the pressure to open the door to mass emigration from the IMF. But it is not all about wealth; there is a sense of unity in Japan, very low criminality too. It is not Bosnia Herzegovina, Lebanon or North Macedonian with different ethnicities / religion fighting with each other and bringing down the countries. The melting pot that the EU is promoting is not that great. Imagine a moment that France has a war against Algeria or Germany against Turkey. We almost cannot. We would be stabbed in the back. Now granted, the UK has introduced mass immigration well before the EU, so it was not solely a EU issue. But the EU is defo promoting more of that.
It was never discussed openly with the public, how brexit should look like, yet voted about.

It still makes me feel sad when I see the images of the British flag being removed from all the others within the EU. Something is going wrong if as a European country you don't wish to be in the concert of European nations trying to work for the benefit of Europe as a whole.

A company switches to just-in-time delivery and the supply chain becomes more vulnerable. Regulations are the free market of society competing against business with people demanding outcomes.

For example - the argument that EU officials can not be sacked?
The UK WAS a member of the EU. Which meant that it sent elected officials from the UK to represent UK interests in the EU parliament just like all other EU member countries.
And yes. UK votes can not fire Spanish EU members of parliament. Just like English voters can not fire Scottish members of UK parliament.
Going on - unelected EU officials can be fired for not following EU regulations. Same as UK unelected officials.

Quite a legitimate point and question! Have we - in Britain, losing trust in Brexit? Actually, the conclusions supported by this - are partially fanciful! Yes, there are those of us in Britain who believe that a mistake of choice have been made! And may even wish that the decision had gone the other way. I am however - a very reluctant acceptor that the decision has been made! And there's no quick or easy way back from that mistake! I voted for remain in Europe. But I am saddened that it went the way it did! I now have no further arguments to offer, except to say that we are seeing some of the consequences of this choice. We will have to suffer from the miscalculation, there's simply no further arguments or choice..
After brexit - even Paris stock market has overtaken London! What a joke!
