      The original US design was not taken up by the USAF because it was so bad, they gave it to the army to be used as a ground attack aircraft but was so bad it couldn't even do that job very well.

      @@pablitopabs3866 None of that is true. Before the war appropriations money was very tight. The Army was out of money for pursuit (fighter) planes, but did have money left over for dive bombers. Thus the A-37 Apache (a combination of the aircraft later known as the P-51 Mustang + dive brakes) was born, it was actually a good, not great, dive bomber. FYI, at that time it was the USAAC (US Army Air Corps), not the USAF. Later in the war the USAAC would become the USAAF (US Army Air Force), and then after the war, the USAF (US Air Force). I’d love to see the sources you have for everything you said in your post because none of them is correct.

      @@Hackspear214 Do you mean ther A-36 Apache? I've never heard of the A-37 Apache. Could you site your sources for this please.
      The USAAF rejected the P-51 due to it's lack of high altitude capabilities among other problems. A US contract was signerd in 1942 for 500 A-36's but no others were sold and 6 or 7 were loaned to the RAF and rejected due to it's incapabilities to do the job.
      You stated "it was actually a good, not great, dive bomber" but how can you call an airframe as "good" if it can't be used exactly how intended due to it's limitations? The early P-51's and A-36's had one of the highest accident rate per hour's flying time of any USAAF aircraft. Combat units flying the A-36A were ordered to restrict their approach to a 70° "glide" attack and refrain from using dive brakes. Could you tell me how this is a "good" airframe considering it only got an order for 500 compared to 5,936 Dauntless and 7,140 Helldiver's and no other contracts were ever made for this airframe!
      The P-51 that every talks about for how great it was during the war was mainly due to the D version with it's RR engine and bubble canopy, all of which were British additions hence it being a British plane.

This wouldn’t change until the engine change from the Allison to the Merlin. It reached speeds of much faster than 400mph (487 to be exact). You say “an iconic dual-role hero”. The P-51D Mustang, an iconic World War II fighter aircraft, holds a significant place in aviation history. This essay will delve into its development, technical specifications, combat prowess, and lasting legacy.
    The P-51D Mustang emerged during a critical period in World War II when the need for long-range escort fighters became increasingly apparent. Designed by North American Aviation, the Mustang was developed in response to a British Royal Air Force (RAF) specification for a high-altitude fighter. First flown in 1940, the Mustang underwent significant modifications and improvements before reaching its final and most famous variant, the P-51D.
    One of the most notable features of the P-51D was its powerplant. Equipped with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the Mustang was capable of exceptional performance, boasting impressive speed, altitude, and range. This combination of power and endurance made it an ideal escort for Allied bombers on long-range missions deep into enemy territory.
    The P-51D Mustang was armed with a formidable array of weaponry. Its armament typically consisted of six .50 caliber Browning machine guns, providing the pilot with substantial firepower to engage enemy aircraft effectively. Additionally, underwing hardpoints could accommodate rockets or bombs, further enhancing its versatility as a ground attack aircraft.
    In combat, the P-51D Mustang proved to be a formidable adversary for the Luftwaffe. Its long-range capabilities allowed it to escort Allied bombers all the way to their targets and back, effectively challenging German fighters on their own turf. The Mustang's speed and agility also made it a formidable dogfighter, capable of holding its own against the best the enemy had to offer.
    One of the most famous units to operate the P-51D Mustang was the 332nd Fighter Group, famously known as the Tuskegee Airmen. These African American pilots not only demonstrated the combat effectiveness of the Mustang but also played a significant role in breaking down racial barriers in the United States military.
    Beyond its wartime exploits, the P-51D Mustang left a lasting legacy in the annals of aviation history. Its role in World War II marked a turning point in aerial warfare, demonstrating the importance of long-range escort fighters in achieving air superiority. Even after the war, the Mustang continued to serve in various air forces around the world, proving its versatility and adaptability.
    In conclusion, the P-51D Mustang stands as a symbol of innovation, courage, and determination. Its remarkable performance, both in combat and beyond, solidified its place as one of the most iconic aircraft of World War II. From its inception to its enduring legacy, the Mustang continues to captivate aviation enthusiasts and inspire future generations of pilots.

      Yes, fitting the supercharged British Merlin is what made the 'designed-&-built-for-Britain' P51 B, C & ultimately D model Mustangs into such a successful aircraft.

    Once again
    Do the research!!!
    Don’t depend on what someone else mistakenly said.
    The facts that you can look up are,
    North America Aviation designed the A36 Apache dive bomber and attack aircraft in a very short time.
    The A36 was in use with the US Army Air Forces prior to World War Two.
    The British military/ country needed any kind of fighter aircraft that it could get to fight against the Germans,
    So the US Government sent over A36 Apache aircraft with their dive brakes wired closed and gave them a letter code of P for pursuit a number of 51 for export on the lent lease program.
    They were originally designed with Alison engines in them which gave them great performance at low altitudes for their designed roll as A for Attack, dive bombers, and that was when the British pilots started calling them Mustangs, because they were a wild ride close to the ground like a young male horse 🐎, a mustang.
    But at higher altitudes they were under powered due to them not being designed for high altitude work.
    The British had a Spitfire with a damaged airframe and a good Rolls Royce engine and an P-51A with a burned out Allison engine, so in desperation for useable fighter aircraft they managed to mount the Rolls Royce Merlin onto the P-51A’a airframe. And the performance and range was so much better that the North American Aviation started up production of the P-51B made it California and the P-51C made in Texas but identical and interchangeable in every part just made in different factories in the US with Packard / US made Rolls Royce Merlin engines in them.
    If you want to see an A36 Apache and a P-51D at the same time you can go to Chino Airports Planes of Fame air museum in Chino California for the most part but I know that they are working on moving the museum to an airport further North and more by the coast of California to get out of all of the restricted air space, so look up their current location and air show schedule, because they have the very best war bird air shows in the world and every one should get the opportunity to see one.

      The Merlin supercharger was designed by Oxford mathematician and farm labourer's son, Sir Stanley Hooker. At Rolls Royce he had free range to do anything he liked and decided to improve the supercharger using fluid dynamics mathematics.

    400mph at high altitudes? What a lie lmfao. At 20,000ft (which is not high tbh) the Mustang was limited to 400mph IAS. If we skip to 30,000ft we get to a limitation of 325mph IAS and at almost it’s service ceiling of 40,000ft we get a limitation of 260mph IAS. This is because the P-51 is limited by it’s mach speed.

    • @Hackspear214
      @Hackspear214 2 месяца назад +1

      You do realize that IAS >< TAS, right? Also, limited by its Mach speed? WTF are you talking about? Maybe in a dive…

    • @phantomraven5044
      @phantomraven5044 2 месяца назад

      @@Hackspear214 Well, frankly I am aware the difference between IAS and TAS but I was simply referencing the manual. Mach speed, is a simplified way of summarizing the issue with the Mustang's compress-ability. Since you are frankly keen on more attacking my message than rather inquiring clarification or explanation I will go ahead and slightly elaborate here. Most WW2 fighters were limited by compress-ability of their frames. The average number is somewhere around mach .8 with some planes being higher (like the P-47) and others being lower. The P-51 was actually capable of ripping its own wings in leveled flight at high altitudes. This is why in the manual & in the cockpit is a plaque that lists the maximum speed for each altitude every 5,000ft. This is obviously because, the higher you go the slower you have to go to approach the speed of sound. In some versions of the P-51 manual they even ponder about the physics of compress-ability saying that it is not yet known why it happens. Of course, NACA was doing preliminary studies during this time.

    • @Hackspear214
      @Hackspear214 26 дней назад

      @@phantomraven5044 OMG, you’re seriously that clueless? When it says that at 40,000 it was traveling at 260IAS, that doesn’t mean ground speed. I can’t believe you don’t know that IT WAS traveling over 400mph above 20,000 ft, the P-51s top speed was 440 mph at 28,100 feet (source: Wikipedia, National Museum of the United States Air Force). The air is less dense at altitude which is why the IAS is lower than the TAS. That statistic you said was false was actually 100% correct.
