  • 🛩️ The legendary P-51 Mustang is considered one of the most iconic aircraft of WWII.
During our visit to the @FlySnF Aerospace Expo, we had the opportunity to speak with Louis Horschel, a Partner at @stallion51fltops, who was proudly showcasing "MadMax," a modified P-51 Mustang.
He offered insight into the Mustang's history and its unique attributes that made it such a well-known aircraft. Renowned for its speed, range, and agility, Louis also shared his firsthand experiences of piloting this remarkable machine! Dive in 👇

@@belleriffraff Oh dear, another case of confidently ignorant.
NAA was approached by the British purchasing commission in 1940 to build P40's under license. They suggested that they could do one better & have a prototype ready in 120 [I think] days using the same low altitude Naval engine that the P40 was using.
This aircraft was put into production FOR the British & was named the Mustang Mk1 by the British.
The US govt. suddenly realised that there was something going on &, in essence, confiscated two aircraft from the first production batch.
Long story short, the US govt. had no funds from that fiscal year for fighter purchases, but DID have funds for dive bomber purchases, so the built-for-Britain Mustang was modified at the design stage to also be a dive bomber, named by the USAAF as the A36 Apache.
The Mustang 1 & A36A as well as the later P51A performed very well at low altitude with its designed-for-the-purpose low altitude Alison engine, however, European air battles were fought at 20,000 feet & above. The Merlin with its very efficient supercharger was tested by both NAA & Rolls Royce in a Mustang airframe & subsequently put into production as the Mustang 2 & P51B & 'C' models.
So, a designed-for-Britain, built-for-Britain & powered by a British engine aircraft became one of the worlds most iconic aircraft of WW2,

@@JesusFollower7559 the british consulted on FAR FAR more than what engine to go in it, for example, early p51's did not have a rear view window, and later models did, you can thank the british for that, theres changes and to the airframe and fusalage, and the design itself is largly from the british experiance during the years of war britain had before the p51, and of course, the name, mustang, britain gave it that name, no one really named vehicles like the british did, and the brits dubbed it the mustang.

Well its how Americans have played it since WWII taking credit. But the aircraft was built to meet a British design specification and development was funded by the British who then ordered the first 600 airframes paid for in cash. The British even gave it the the name 'Mustang I' and it entered service with the RAF in early 1942.
The 'P-51' title came when the USAAF finally bought one although it was known as the A-36 'Apache' at first to use funds for a ground attack version when funding for a fighter had dried up.

So the British gsve Packard motor company (an American train manufacturer if I'm not mistaken) to build and install in the P-51. Over time Packard kept adding upgrades to the point the British started calling it the Packard-Merlin engine.
It was an American manufactured plane that the Americans used, but it was initially made for the British

    • @1chish

@@corporalpunishment1133 Yes it is so and no it is not referred to as a licence deal.
      For example:
      1. Rolls was the sole vendor of all Merlin engines regardless of where they were built as shown when the first deal was announced in July 1940 by 'Time Magazine'. Packard Motor Car Company was selected to take on the $130,000,000 Merlin order (equivalent to $2.83 billion in today's Dollars). Note it was an 'order' not a 'licence'.
      2. The first generation of US jet engines were all licence built versions of British engines. They were built by GE and others under those licences and THEY sold them to customers not the UK rights holder and even competed for export orders fitted to US built aircraft. Like the Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire engines were licence-built in the United States as the Wright J65 and sold to many customers.
      3. The Martin B-57 Canberra was built under licence from English Electric and had free hand to 'Americanise' it to suit USAF needs. The US Government ordered their B-57s from Martin not English Electric.

Yes I'm not sure if I posted this b4 , but did he say , " most iconic fighter of WW2"? Hmmmm , the Super Marine Spitfire mark 4 might have something to say about that , more power with a genuine Merlin motor, faster turn circle and bigger guns ! The P51 yes nice , but using a copy of a Rolls Royce Merlin motor, was very good , but Spit Fires won the Battle of Britton a year before the Americans were even in the war , not to ever leave out the German jet fighters that would pass them like they were standing still !

It was the P-51D with its long range that gave the Allies air superiority over Europe in time for the Normandy landings. The Spitfire was an excellent plane no doubt but it simply did not have the range to get to the decisive battle space.

One of our customers, at the Watsonville, CA airport had one of these in the late 50s. He burned a bearing and we had to replace the engine. He found one in Texas, in a can, like Spam, covered in cosmoline. I was the shop flunky and got to remove all that cosmoline, and filter all the silver out of the oil radiator. Such a beautiful. He was from San Jose and would bring his girlfriend over the hill to have lunch. I could hear that plane as it crested the hill and came down to the airport. He'd make one low-level pass and then go round for landing. What a sound and what a sight!
