Nexpo did a great job at summarising this incident.
My father was one of the passengers on this flight for a business trip. Watching this makes me tear up for him, and for the loss of the 520 lives on board that day, and the 4 survivors who have gone through such a traumatic event.
I've spent most of my life studying and pursuing a career in aviation because I never want something like this to happen again. I've worked as both a plane maintenance worker, and am currently going through training to become a captain on the 737-type.
I've never once taken any shortcuts when attending to plane repairs/maintenance and have done everything exactly according to the standard procedures. This is something that all maintenance workers should do to avoid anything like this.
At my company, Flight 123 is one of the flights that is continuously referenced in inductions, in memory of the pilots and passengers and as a reminder for workers to do their job properly. What hasn't been pointed out in the video is that, against all odds, the crew all fought to the very end... they didn't show any signs of giving up. Their sheer will almost got them through this horrible incident and that's something I want to carry on on every single flight I'm in. They're probably one of the best few pilots I've ever known.
I'm happy to answer any questions that anyone has if you see this comment. Anything about my experience, technical details about the incident, or anything else.
I watch or read something about this flight like once every month, and each time I bawl my eyes out thinking about what they all must've felt going through this.
RIP Dad, Captain Takahama, Officer Sasaki, Flight Engineer Fukuda, and the other 516 lives lost that day.
you said you’re training to become a captain, how many years have you studied or how much experience did you need to begin trialing to become a captain? just wanna know the process you went through to achieve where you’re at right now
Not really. The video doesn't do as good of a job at showing the skill of the pilots at manipulating the engines as well as the 3d video showed
How old were you when this happened
do you know in what state the 4 survivors were found? How did they survive, I can't wrap my head around it
@@massivelegend3339 Nexpo didn't include lots of important information. They survived because about 3 seconds before the final impact the plane hit a mountain ridge which slowed down the plane and made it tumble, causing the people in the back of the plane to not land directly in the main crash site with burning fuel, but some meters away.
4 ppl tanked downward spiraling plane crash + 12 hour emergency response time
They're japanese, they're built for plane crashes
even more tanked it but the horrid response time killed them

@@ashuriaatojudoTbf, they were kind of on their home turf since the Andes are very close by to Uruguay lmao.
@@kommandantkillcode not even close, they are 700 miles away from the andeas. Their entire country is flat, they ve never seen a fking mointain in their lives, highest peak over there is 1500 ft only
The people responsible for the repair are directly responsible for life lost. Really really sad.
Boing Boing been testing the bouncing capacities of it's airplanes for 4 decades now
Boeing engineer are responsible here actually as in case of such damage caused engineers have to make a specific repair plan. Maintenance crew can unfortunately not do much other than do the repair itself. Most likely the initial crack was invisible to the eye and when the repair was done, maintenance crew could not even tell that it wouldn’t be effective.
Shhh otherwise boing will make you not want to be around anymore 🪆🪆🪆
thats literally exactly what he said@@olichamp5036
i wonder if this procedure was seen as safe before this happened
There's a video by green dot aviation which actually shows how good the pilots were. Many people have been given this scenario in simulation and nobody lasted more than 20 minutes. They managed to almost take control of a plane which was essentially doomed. Incredible skill and commitment. Dont think this doc does justice to their heroics.

Sakamoto Kyu was on this flight. Pretty famous japanese singer at the time.
The second week in August is a very important time in japanese culture called obon. During obon, families travel home to see their loved ones. Super tragic timing for this to happen.

There is some info on how they survived. Something about the rotation of a portion of the fuselage resulting in reduced Gs and just a lot of luck.
In reference to delta 191, it crashed due a weather phenomenon called a microburst. A downdraft of a storm that literally pushed it into the ground.
The crew almost saved it. Prob would've if it weren't for the water storage tanks

The company I was with had a family member or co-worker on this plane.
There was also a lucky person at that work place who had booked a flight but cancelled that flight because of a friend's invitation.
The sadness fades with time, but it never goes away.
imo this is the most terrifying single aircraft crash in the aviation history. they managed to fly the unstable plane in over 30 minutes that no one can replicate that in the simulator.
I know this is a video with a serious subject but "Activate Windows" is making me laugh everytime
Imagine flying the plane then all of a sudden “activate windows” pops up and now your screwed
They flew the plane for 32 minutes with just flaps and thrust. Their steering yokes were useless since there were no stabiliser and hydraulics. All 3 pilots received a Polaris award after the crash for their heroic effort. If the flaps didnt fail at the end too, they would have made it back to Tokyo just 100 km away (a few more minutes) but it wasnt meant to be
Same incident happened in china airlines flight 611 with a boeing 747. they failed to repair the bulkhead correctly after the tailstrike but it took 22 years to build up the crack this time compared to JAL 123 which is 7 years . the plane snaps mid-air.

You have to commend the pilots and technician for working as hard as they did to save everyone. I believe had help arrived sooner that their efforts would have been visible.
For anybody still intrested in the crash, its much more worth to look up the air crash investigation documentary of this incident, cause Nexpo overly dramatizes the crash so much, it doesn't do justice to the pilots. Seriously, go look up an actual documentary, if intrested.
what a reaction! i even forgot the nexpo video was playing in the background
The nacelle is the streamlined enclosure on an aircraft, typically holding engines, fuel, or equipment. It's commonly referred to as the "body" or "housing" of the engine. The nacelle plays a crucial role in providing aerodynamic efficiency and protecting the engine components. In some contexts, especially in casual conversation or among aviation enthusiasts, someone might refer to the nacelle or engine housing as "body gear."
I find it incredibly interesting how when I'm sitting at the airport I don't worry about flying but as soon as I step off those boarding things and put one foot on the actual plane every video like this and every episode of air crash investigation I've ever seen in my entire life come to the front of my mind.

you definitely can and should. there are a few factors why flying looks so dramatic:
since flying has a very low chance of crashes, the ones that do crash get investigated way more to find out what went wrong. Even by governments. More than for any car crash ever. if you disregard the overall tiny percentage of crashes, this can just look like disasters are allover the place cause reports are so detailed.
Also: Once an airplane does crash, that crash is way more spectacular. For example in a car if you slightly hit someone, nothing happens mostly. But for a plane, it is always falling off the sky which is deadly in and of itself. No matter how big or small the cause was. Also it then crashes in a spectacular manner ofc, resulting in headlines of any news organization.
Also, most of the crashes you will see analyzed on YT are old. Like this one from the 1980s, all these things have since been patched.
Flying is so safe. Anybody can get a drivers license and then do horrible things with it. But to fly an airplane, SO MUCH is needed. Anyone u will see sitting in that pilot seat now in 2024 will be a professional. Also auto pilots are so advanced by now that they literally are able to fly the plane mostly on their own, and also do. While cars still dont have systems even close to this.
If you dont fly a plane, then you sure as hell shouldnt be be anywhere close to a car. Even standing next to a street walking is more dangerous than flying.
Seeing the world from above is something that totally changes your world view. Its incredible and you should experience it. Also so many different cultures and lovely people are locked away from you if you dont. Please do it.
@@endlessdiep I’m a bitch pussy boy and can’t handle heights let alone being in a plane, I fall to my death every dream, I ain’t getting in one
Flying is much more safe than driving a car and statistically it’s not even close. Your more likely to get in a car crash each day you drive than to be in a plane crash in your lifetime
