    The problem of emancipation has more to do with the inability to get a mortgage because of “temporary” contracts. The whole contract system needs reform.

    • @pedrofmc0000
      @pedrofmc0000 3 года назад +3

      To get a mortgage you have to have at least 25% or more of the appraised price and saving those amounts is very difficult or takes a long time. The usual thing in many European countries is to resort to flats or apartments for rent. An alternative that doesn't require a very high initial outlay.

    • @FirstLastOne
      @FirstLastOne 3 года назад +7

      The whole contract system existed in minor form as far back as the mid 1990's but when the meltdown of 2008 happened, businesses took full advantage of contracting work out and never looked back. The notion of a job for life is almost impossible to find now because the majority of companies see employees as 'tools' with no thought for the toll of that 'tool's' existence should they decide to toss it in the bin.
      Now businesses have the gall to complain that workers don't show loyalty to the company and just leave as soon as they find something better. The irony.

    My observation from 40+ years working in various companies and sectors of the (US) economy is that there is a difference between a “boss” and “leader.” Leaders listen and support and motivate through clear communication of priorities and goals. Bosses tell people what to do. The idea of a boss is someone who thinks employees are not actually working unless they can see them (literally) doing something and can directly tell them to stop doing something and start doing something else. This is especially true if the employee is an hourly/wage worker. This leads to a lot of “busy work” or “make work”, whose only purpose is to appear to be busy doing something. A really dysfunctional management culture makes this even worse. $0.02

    Peter West asking you to block certain named people because he thinks they are offensive/abusive is ‘rich’ coming from him! Yesterday I replied to a post re the ‘Brits leaving in droves’ according to a U.K. paper. I gave my opinion as to why and who may take their place eg Scandinavians, Russians and Americans. We got into a conversation where he ended ‘calling me stupid’ and that I didn’t know what I was talking about! So if you’re going to block people, maybe he should be added to the list.

They are most likely vacant paying no taxes and contributing nothing to society. Real estate is an asset class but above that it’s a dwelling for humans. It has a utility and a purpose for society. I have some concerns about the cap on rents in Spain and the penalty for having vacant units . My concern is that actions such as this effect capital growth and income all at the same time. It seems to me that the responsibility for the provision of social housing is being transferred in part to the individual property owner . In my view the government should be providing social housing in a bigger way so that everyone gets access to decent housing.
    Spain seems to have a big problem here and it should look hard at the question.Rent controls are not the answer in my opinion.

    Public housing: there should be a "last resort" for those who need a place to sleep.
    250 Euros for young people: 250 euros is not enough to afford rent on one's own in Spain. Period. This strikes me as little more than a discount coupon for those better off, while poorer people won't get enough to strike out on their own.
    Price cap laws: mixed; these have been tried before in New York, Paris, London, Hong Kong, and elsewhere, and by themselves, they don't solve the problem of not enough supply.
    Civil servant pay raise: Their wages should rise with inflation too.
    Animals: I wonder, if I move to Spain, what this will mean for my cat.
    Police being armed: In America, police have guns because there are 300 million guns on the streets. They easily argue (and win) that they need protection too. During the Wild West years, Billy the Kid killed two officers at once because he carried better hardware than the cops did.
    Getting Spanish citizenship is long. 10 years of accepted/recognized residence and you might cough up your previous citizenship unless you were born in a former colony of Spain or are of Sephardic Jewish ancestry (in which you can skip the 10 years, though you still have to apply for it and "claim" it). Portugal and France only require 5 years and they also allow dual citizenship.
    Working from Home: I only did this once, for a credit card contractor. It was OK, I was disciplined enough to always be on time, but not everyone else was.
    Journalism today is sensationalistic because it tries to sell ad space. This was true even back in the 19th century when Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst were selling sensationalistic material over the Spanish Civil War to Americans.

    I think the housing issue is the only way to be. People should be penalized for holding empty apartments when there are homeless people who are struggling to even keep a roof over their head.
    Rent should have a cap on it, because everyone should have a right to a house. I believe the measure of a society is how the lowest paid people are treated. If Spain has a problem here then maybe they should equalize the access to housing, food, and clean water.

    Subsidizing rent is a typical stupid socialist idea that creates more harm than solving problems. I also do not agree with the complete hands-off approach of the right-wing parties here either in this case b.t.w. The problem with rent subsidies are multiple:
    1. That money is not free. The government needs to print if (or have it printed by the ECB). The actual value of your income is a fraction of the total amount of money floating in the economy. That means that every time the government prints/borrows money, your income (even though numerically constant) becomes worth less along with your savings, and inflation increases. It's also a cheap misdirection attempt by the government to blame inflation of wage hikes which are in reality a consequence and not a cause.
    2. Rent subsidies effectively increase rental prices and in turn purchase prices. Rental prices are effectively dictated by the supply and paying capacity of renters. The government can cap rental prices, but the renters will then cap the quality, sizes, and services to/of what they're renting.
    3. The problem in the long term when the government finally figures out that their interventions do more harm than good, is that reversing those subsidies cannot be done without harming many low income renters.
    4. It creates government, and in particular socialist party dependence, which is a slight of hand in what should be a democratic society.
    5. It's the mass rental corporations (investment funds, etc) who are a problem and not the little guy or old couple who are renting out a second property to fund their own pension. This is where I disagree with the right-wing parties too on this matter. Simply tax those corporations (and not the private individuals) at an increasing rate proportional to the amount of properties they exploit. That way, it becomes less lucrative for them, and at the same time more properties will flow into the private market, increasing market competition which leads to lower prices. But even this has to be thought through carefully for loopholes because those corporations are smart at finding them.
    In any case, if you've ever worked with someone with good intentions but who broke everything they touched up to the point that the boss just has to fire them, well that is the impression that socialist governments leave on me, time and time again.
