  • The serial entrepreneurs and founders of Angel Studios talk about growing up poor in a family of eleven, how they went from selling potatoes door to door to being the ad agency of record for Poo-Pourri, Squatty Potty, and Orabrush, how they survived a $62 million lawsuit from four of the biggest studios in Hollywood, and how their Angel Guild is cracking the code to finding the next big film.

I grew up with 8 sisters and four brothers. We never knew we were poor either. Had so much fun growing up! Dirt, rocks, crab apples fights, etc. were our toys. Suburbia Detroit and many neighbor kids. My first bike was a frankenbike. Pieces we garbage picked and made into a working bicycle. First gas powered lawn mower we pulled out of someones trash and rebuilt the engine. We fielded our own baseball and football team and played against other neighborhoods.

We grew up figuring it out ourselves. Kids nowadays need it all figured out for them. Bo matter how hard I try, I can not get my kids to do the same thing. My kids have electronics, but I rearly allow them on it. Its got to be the food and medicine we give them

I grew up playing "army" with siblings and friends using sticks for "guns" and walnuts (we had trees on the property) for "grenades". We had bicycles we bought for nickels and dimes, which we earned picking beans and other crops, from a family friend who ran one of those now extinct businesses called a second hand store. Had a lot of fun, and only knew we were poor because a few of the more well to do kids at school really seemed to enjoy pointing that out.

Love these guys. Great work ethic. They never would have had this ethic and stick to it…if they had store bought toys and were not encouraged into using their own creativity growing up. You know the one your mom said…go outside and play and don’t come back in until your chores are done and the sun is setting. Oh, and don’t kill each other. What would the neighbors think?

I really enjoyed watching this! These two guys were so interesting. It was nice hearing how they grew up. When I was young, the neighbor kids all got together outside, and we invented games to play. We stayed out until our Mom's called us in for dinner.
Kids are missing out staying on their devices. We humans are made to create, to do, to be, and not to sit for hours in front of a device. I too spend too much time in front of the computer. Kids tuning into this show would really think about what these two guys were saying about their childhood. It is in children's DNA to realize it would be a lot of fun making and building things. I think they would enjoy it so much more than be on their devices for hours.

I’m just passionate about what they are doing with The Chosen. After watching this I am so proud to be a Guild member and I will participate more. I am even more disgusted by what Disney has become also. Thank you Mike. I’ve been a fan of yours for a long time. I subscribed.

Is this their model? To sue and tie up good content? Sounds like their Hollywood lawyer gave them this advice and counsel.

My mom was an early homeschooler. She was a teacher. She started thinking about homeschooling us when she was teaching in New York. They were really failing my siblings. A teacher even told my mom that my 5 year old brother wasn't college material. It continued to be an issue in Texas. She'd come home from teaching and find my siblings hadn't learned anything and she'd have to teach all over and then do homework till 10 pm. After we started homeschooling in 1996 it took 2-4 hours to get school work done. She used her teachers certificate to get us good curriculum. And to this day there's a good amount that I'm more knowledgeable in then my husband who had a positive public schooling experience. I tried putting my son into public school because I figured the district was a better one. I was wrong. When your 6 year old has a panic attack every single day about going to school, that's just not right. 6 months later and he's still processing the trauma, but at least he's happy and he's ahead where he was behind. Not even 7, 6 months homeschooling, and he's already working on mostly 2nd grade material. Oh, and that brother that a teacher said wasn't college material, he has a phd. All 3 of us are happy, have stable families, college graduates, and are financially secure, and all 3 of us are homeschooling or having every intention of homeschooling our kids

    Brilliant! Unsung heroes righ there.
I remember being in Germany, with the military, and we bought our first VCR. It was used and came with three video cassettes, which had three movies recorded on them. One was a great movie, but had a few vulgar words, so I erased the movies. A few weeks later, we were at a friends home, and we were watching a home recorded VHS western movie, and suddenly, a bad word was 'bleeped'. I said, "how'd you do that?" And he showed me how to do it with the recorder! That was about 1982-83. I have wished for such tech since then, and now you've done it. Well done you!

I’m so grateful for all of you guys! My daughter LOVES Tuttle Twins! I purchased the homeschool curriculum- both history books and the economic curriculum, plus almost every other book (I have to catch up on the newest ones). We can’t get enough! 😂 Also joined the Guild after seeing Sounds of Freedom with my husband on Independence Day last summer. Such an important movie! I was not aware of the present day slavery in our country and around the world. Hollywood, being a big part of that slave trade, obviously won’t produce movies that may end their evil involvement in it. So thank you Angel Studios for your bravery! I pray it has already helped to stop some human trafficking 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I LOVED The Shift - I’ve watched more than once! Cabrini was really interesting. We haven’t watched much of the Chosen, but it is by far the best depiction of Jesus that I’ve ever seen and I’m planning on binge watching the series as soon as our homeschool year is over 🥳🙌🏻😁Thank you, Mike Rowe, for another great interview!
