Making a french cleat storage rack for the spokeshaves, card scrapers and other two handled hand tools was a challenge tell I thought out and realized it was actually simple. I made this spoke shave rack with white oak and dowels. it hangs on french cleats and is easily moved to a new spot.

People are complaining about BLO? If you’ve found a finish that works for you, what’s the point in screwing with the formula? There truly is a hater for everything. Loving the videos James.
+Hakeem Hasworth lol yup. It takes all kinds
Most guys like racks and you have several nice sets. It's your shop, if you like BLO, then use BLO. Let the complainers use their finish of choice. Merry Christmas James and to your family as well.
thanks Thomas. same to you and yours!
Loved the Oops. Who hasn't done that at some point trying to get a project completed. And a nice simple fix too. Merry Christmas James and the family....
+Patrick thanks Patrick. Same to you and yours.
Once again, very nice work James! Always enjoy watching someone who really knows how to use hand tools & put dowels in the correct way the first time................ :)
lol thanks man.
Thanks for keeping it real and showing how you can workaround the mistakes we all make. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
+Richard Wright so true. Is is not about being perfict but fixing your problems.
It's fine it's shop furniture.
I just put in a small cleat system over my work bench and seeing how you tackled the bevel and how you're making these holders is giving me some ideas. Such cool stuff!
+lujanjd sweet. There are so many ways to skin a cat.
OOPs. Been there done that. My Frustration is not normally child friendly. At least it was an easy fix. Getting close to filing that wall James.
thanks Peter. yup, I have a plan for every inch of space!
Called it. Looks good James!
+Peter McKinlay lol thanks Peter
Awesome job, James. It has been a pleasure watching over this last year. I appreciate the way you respond and interact with your viewers. I'm sure it will become more difficult to maintain as your base grows, but I'm sure you will find a nice ballence in the new year (and I'll see you on patreon starting in January.)
thanks Donley. I hope to respond to most comments as long as I can, but we will see. thanks
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !!!
Thanks for all the great shows and ideas !!!
thanks Terry. same to you and yours!
I could hear the disappointment in your your voice about the upside down pegs 😆
+Clay Foreman lol yup.
Nice James and an excellent recovery. In my last project at least two of the tennons were sideways ... I decided that it was a feature ☺
yup. that is how you find your style. unfortunately, my style is always leaning to one side and looks like a beaver family moved into he shop.
Ops! Who has not happened ? Another good addition to the wall!
thanks Daniel!
Good timing on all these storage videos: I'll be moving into a new work shop in a week or two :)
+leif52pickup sweet man. Looking forward to seeing it.
Great video and BLO is also my good to for most everything.
right on. Thanks Adam!
Nicely done James! 👍👊
+Fred McIntyre thanks Fred!
Put them all upside down- "OOH SHIIIT!" . This had me rolling on the floor lol
listen again. I did not say that. different vowel. LOL
Wood By Wright lol
Merry Christmas James. Nice tool wall. I've enjoyed watching you building it. Good way to "fix" your oops. BLO is a good, fast finish, I also like using shellac, super quick drying out here. Looking forward to next year's videos.
right on. thanks Ken
Yay, I'm not the only one to put stuff in upside down. X-D thanks for sharing, great video. You've been a great inspiration this year, and I look forward to next year. Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and yours!
+The Z-Family thanks. Same to you and yours.
Good Video. Hope You and your Family have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
thanks Jeff same to you and yours!
Nice! Even with the original cleat cuts that have a "slide off" feature.
+Jim Dockrell thanks Jim.
The tool wall is looking great that's a great way to hold spokeshaves i would of never thought of doing it like that. And who cares if you like to use BLO tell them people they can put whatever they want on the stuff they build LOL
+Holly Helton lol thanks Holly.
You are almost out of wall. Nice save.
+Bill Hart yup. I have a plan for every square inch.
James, the Rack-oholic :D It seriously looks fantastic :) Merry Christmas to you and all around you ॐ
thanks man. same to you and yours!
Hey James great job I'd say you had a nice rack but you might take it the wrong way hahaha Merry Christmas my friend and happy holidays to you and yours!
LOL thanks man. same to you and yours!
Looking good James...rr
thanks Richard.
What is a good spokeshave make/model that would be worth restoring? I have been picking up old Stanley planes and bringing them back to newish, I love it!
Try making your own! I love making my own tools :)
there really is not a bad one as they are so simple. and once you get one you will want more with different sizes and shapes. each one has a personality. but a great starting point is the Stanley 151
now thats the kind of mistakes I make James, sometimes even worse.
lol yup. the stupid little ones!
Get me the fluffy cushions!!!
+Brian Prusa lol. This is not a sewing channel.
“Rack Attack,” Jimbo
+Charles McCants lol yup
Approximately what angle are the dowels set at? I'm guessing 22.5 - 30 degrees?
They are only at around 10 degrees or so. The more angle you put on them the less space you have to store things. And I don't need much at all.
Comment down below!
Measure twice...reminds me of a joke about laying sod down in the yard. Green side up... Great video James. One of these days you will finish a tool, rack or other piece of wood with some other natural substance other than Boiled Linseed Oil. For us who are allergic to Linseed. Just a suggestion. (right now, I use mineral oil and paste wax) PS: Is it a personal joke that you misspell one word in each of your video titles?
Welcome to the inside group. I always do something funny on the opening card. I always like it when people try to correct the spelling there. I am thinking I will use a shellac on the side table I am about to make but I am not sure. I will probably do a combination on it with Shellac, BLO and then Poly to get the color I am looking for.
Cool. About the opening, I was actually thinking about '...more racks than a Los Angeles plastic surgeon' but this is a family show.
LOL I thought you were going BDSM
you have to many spokeshaves i need one lol
LOL one can never have enough spokeshaves. I still can not find my missing ones. did you take them?
i didnt get em , that would be a sin to snitch hand tools my friend
Red dowels ?
Ya need some pasties and even a pushup to hang on it.....
Whats up with that pencil ?
yup red oak dowels. I thought of making my own white oak but I have so many 1/4" red oak dowels on hand I could not see a reason to change. the pencil is actually called a Lead holder. I use it for a lot of rough layout lines. a friend made it for me last year.
2.0mm ?
or 1.3 ?
2mm
Cool, I have a store bought, also a 1.3, I have seen colored sticks for the 2.mm I'd like to try when i get a secondary one.
should have used the mistakes glued into the bottom of hanger
I thought the same thing when I saw them on the bench.
a good mechanic can make a nearly invisible dutchman
not quite sure what you are saying.
Too Much BLO and paste wax! Who said so??!!
LOL I know right!
Never heard you swear before.
LOL that is about as corse as my language gets!
Usually it is "Stink!!!!" But "shoot" works well too! :)
I would have used a few colorful combinations. Unless my kids were in the room.
people are always surprised when I hit my thumb.
