Karl was kind of right with the chimp in space. It was trained in a simulator on the ground where there was a series of switches each with a light above it. They were trained to flip each switch when the light came on above it, and at that point it wold be rewarded with a treat from a dispenser. The switches didn't do anything but turn off the light above it.
This training was done because at the time, everything about physiology in space was unknown, and it wasn't known if a human could function at all while in space. Another thing they were not sure about was nutrition, there was some concern ( not a mot, but the possibility was raised) that a person could starve to death in zero gravity because the food they ate would float in the center of their stomach and wouldn't be absorbed by the body.

Around 40 minutes in... it sounds like Karl is talking about chastity belts. They were used in the middle ages.

In part, Karl is correct. The invention of the airplane, has made War more grim. It has made it easier to be involved... and has in a way, made it less personal. It made it easier to kill from a distance, instead of killing folks face to face.
As for the idea of the old person having the baby as they die... It sounds a bit like the idea of the Phoenix. The Phoenix is seen in native writings and art. It is in their stories. I guess that Rick and Steve wouldn't appreciate the beauty of the native American culture and their stories, if they think the idea of the Pheonix is rubbish to them...
So much for them being more educated and cultured than Karl. They seem even more ignorant than Karl, after hearing their comments on here...

Yes but long range artillery was available decades before the first powered flight ever took place. Just look at WW1, almost zero airplanes and shitload of howitzers. That is anonymous death from a distance.
