Hey Clint. An awesome review as always. Just arrived is a new 830 to replace the old 810 that finally retired itself. It sounds like I got the right model. Keep riding buddy!
I like the K-Edge combo mount. Garmin Edge 830 on top and Garmin Varia UT800 light on bottom. Love the Climb Pro feature for courses. The HR and Cadence graph data fields are interesting.
Please do a video with how to use trail form on the Garmin Edge 830. Please cover setting your course and simply just free riding, but with the Garmin showing your location on the map at all times. Thanks
Great, great review! I have watch so many reviews of this device but none show the use of the mobile phone and the touch features as well as this review. Thank you @Clint Bibbs
I have been using the new 530 for a few days of mtb riding now. Today it's GPS was so inaccurate multiple times. I had uploaded a pre-determined route from trailforks and the Edge 530 was telling me i was hundreds of meters off track at times, or it would drift hundreds of meters STRAIGHT down the mountain and then curl me back to the position it was at before. Weird navigation, was almost useless as a way of navigation. Also it effected the location of the trailforks app on my phone. first time The Trailforks app on my phone was ever that inaccurate on these trails, but first time I used both the app and the garmin edge in contention on these said trails. Thinking I will return it. However everything seams to be working perfectly fine on city roads (Navigation etc)
I second this request. I've had my 830 for 3 weeks now, and have yet to successfully navigate an MTB course I created from Trailforks or Garmin Connect for example. I can't make it tell me where to turn when I get to a fork (Turn guidance is on). Worse, it keeps telling me to turn on every bend in the trail, and mtb trails are full of bends. LOL.
Thanks for showing some clear benefits over the 1030. Now I am 100% sure I made the right choice with the 830. The larger screen has never worked for me on the 1000. Its hard to pick out fields when you are moving along and I use a Varia Vision anyway as an extra display (I have impaired hearing so the heads up radar display is my most appreciated feature of all!).
Anyway you can do a vid on the ForkSight feature please? ForkSight for Dummies: 1) Power on Edge 830 2) Load trails 3)... IOW show what you talk about at around time 5:30 in vid. This is what I got the device for, but couldn't seem to make it work the first 2 times out on a trail. Thanks!
I get it now, you don't really have to do anything. Go to a trail system that's in Garmin maps, and start ride. When you stop at a fork, Forksight pops up.
The responsiveness of the 830 is miles better than 520, nice improvements there. But the interaction with the device is so 20th century compared to Wahoo :(
Nice 👍 video, I just got Garmin 530 bundle.... I sweat too much and get too dirty for Touch screens..I prefer buttons also I think 🤔 you forgot about the speed sensor 2 and cadence 2 and heart rate sensor 2 ... works with Zwift now !!!!! Kudos
Clint, is the brightness of the screen on the 830 just like the brightness on the screen of the 1000? I also have the 1030 and I find out that screen looks very dull in brightness compared to the 1000 and I have the settings correct
The heart rate monitor on the Garman watch, at least the Vivoactive 4 that I have, is not very accurate after 120 bpm. The chest strap is much more accurate and can pair to the watch.
Is the battery of Garmin Edge 830 replaceable? If so, then from where should I buy the battery, what should be the specification of the replacement battery and how do I replace the existing battery ?
Hi. Is Garmin useful for long traveling, or really any better than Komoot or other appli on phone for travelling? It seems by your review it gets really useful for training or short and sporty ride. More precisely, is it worthwhile to buy it when your main interest is to travel? Thanks for your good work and advise.
Yes. The battery life is around 15 hours but you can get an external battery pack (called Garmin Charge Power Pack) to clip on the back of the Garmin which extends the battery by an additional 24 hours. www.garmin.com/en-US/p/571552

Great video! I've been planning to get the 530 but am now wondering if the 830 is better. You came from the 520 so touch screen or buttons? Pros / cons?
I have the same questions. Which did you end up getting ? Touchscreen seem easier to navigate but don't know if it works with gloves/mud/rain while mountain biking. I am also interested in exploring the map of the 830 (unplanned route or bike trails)…
I just purchased the new trek domane sl 5 road bike. i am considering a bike computer. i have used a cat eye on my hybrid bike for trail rides. do you think the 830 is a good choice over the 1030 version? only reason i would need a bigger screen may be due to better visibility.
I love the amount of screen real estate of the 1030 but 830 is fine. Keep in mind if you also want to put this on a mountain bike I would definitely go with the 830, as the 1030 is so big it moves around unless you put it on an out front mount or a top mount
I like the video overview. I am trying to decide between the Wahoo Roam and this one. I've had horrible experience with Garmin in past so just wondering how their software bugs and fixes have been with this? Usually they release a model without all the kinks worked out and then all the new adopters are the beta-testers more or less for the first year. Was hoping that wasn't the product cycle approach taken with this new iteration now that Wahoo is a serious contender to their marketshare.
The software is definitely getting more refined. I've had issues in the past with bugs on older devices, but the 830 seems to be pretty solid. No matter what electronic device you're always going to get some glitches here and there. But I would think you're going to be pretty happy with the 830.
I recently purchased a Garmin Edge 830 - first purchase of a Garmin product. My display seems blur, in particular the the large text/characters in the main menu with white background. Annoying, a bit uncomfortable but not dramatic. I don't know if this is a defect or if I am used to better screen in general (i.e. iPhone). Are you experiencing the same? Thanks. John
@@ClintGibbs The blurriness is more noticeable in low light environment (i.e. in the shade or inside a building) and when the backlight is on. When the device is in direct sunlight, the display/text become suddenly crisp. Makes a huge difference. Maybe some sort of anti-reflective or screen optimization for outdoor use? Have you noticed the same thing?
Hi Clint, very good video. Thank you. I would like to mention that the Pre-climb functionality is not working as precise as expected. Some climbs are not identified as climbs - some steep climbs are missing at all. Compared to the Fenix 5 the functionalities are very limited as well. There is room for improvements for Garmin. Again, thank you for this consideration of the 830 in this earl stage after market disclosure. 2019_06_28, Cheers Ralf
I have been considering a Garmin as an upgrade over using my iPhone for MTB Strava rides. My main reason for the upgrade is segment accuracy. Have you had any experience on the accuracy of the 830 vs phones or other devices?
@@ZillaYT 530/830 has a basemap which includes all Trailforks data. You need to select that basemap, it's probably not set as default. You don't need TF app for that.
Hi. I can't seem to find information about a following issue. I am thinking between the Wahoo Bolt V2 and Garmin 830. With the Wahoo it is all clear, since I have the V1. But I don't know if the following is possible with the Edge 830. Lets say I am navigating with a pre-loaded course onto 830. But half way through I decide to change the route, and need to get off the planned (course) track to get to one place. As I have read, I cannot upload new courses to 530/830 from a phone/app while an activity is in progress. But what if I select an address/POI or even a point on a map during an activity and selected course already? Will this work? Won't the current activity stop/end ?? Thnx
I'm pretty sure you're going to have to stop the current route and then load another one that you already have saved on your phone. These devices work by planning a route in advance versus a GPS where you can program an address and navigate to it. In those cases it would be better off to get a phone mount and just use your phone.
@@ClintGibbs yes, if I have a saved course I can select a different one from the device. But I was asking about selecting a point on a map. This is my guess that I have to stop the current course, then choose a POI to navigate to. And still this shouldn't affect a running activity.
@@Cycling.Doughnut For what I read I think you could do it with the 830 but not with the 530. Because with the 830 you can plan your track right on the edge through waypoints. And if you change course during navigation it should be able to recalculate not just to go back on track from the point of deviation but also to go on finding a variant track, like outdoor apps. This the same question I am wondering and asking on you tube and reading reviews it is what I found. But I don't know exactly if you can modify your course during navigation without stopping the ongoing ones like komoot does.
Im considering buying the 830 due to the fact that ive been using my phone and the freaking gps always gets lost in the mountain plus several times my cellphone has died as i was returning home. The garmin gps is better?... it would know where i am anywhere??? I do a lot MTV
Yes, the Garmin GPS is more accurate. There are a couple different types of GPS you can use in the Garmin. Plus you're not draining your phone battery as you use it.
Clint are you still in love with the 830? I am comparing the 830 to the 1030 in order to purchase one.. In my research it seems like the 830 has a better battery life than the 1030 even though GARMIN claims they are the same. Can you give me your opinion based on you usage of both?
To me it actually seems like the 1030 has a longer battery life. I still like the 1030 for my gravel bike since you can display so much data on the screen. For mountain biking I would choose the 830 for gravel and road I would choose a 1030.
It's just going to depend if you want to use the device for other activities such as running, hiking, kayaking... In those cases the Fenix would be better. For pure cycling the 830 would be better. In the next few weeks I plan to do a review of my vivoactive 4 and talk about why you would want to use that over a pure cycling computer.
@@ClintGibbs 830 turned up today 😁 on create course does it only use roads? Im wanting to do xc rides via footpaths etc and trail folks isn't very popular where I live.
@@keaty1984 to be honest I'm not really sure. I have not looked into it. But you can put the trail forks app on your 830. It's sort of helpful at times but obviously you can't plan a ride on it.
Hey Clint, amazing video bud. After a long couple of months of comparison between the 830 and 539, I decided on the 530 as I didn't like the logistics of using a touch screen during rides. Did you make a similar detailed video of the 530? Keep up the good work 😃
Never used a bike computer. Yesterday I rode a new area with trails out in the wilderness. I found myself pulling out my Iphone using Trailforks every 5-10 mins to ensure I was heading in the right direction. If someone has no interested the training features of a Garmin would it be nuts to use an old Iphone 5S as my "trail computer". I would use a handlebar/stem mount to hold the phone. Would this work or does the Garmin do a better job for GPS/Trail locator?
For Navigation, where the Garmin excels is planning a route and then follow it.. Also you get close to 20 hours of battery life which will never get out of a phone keeping the screen on. That being said, the map will not be as detailed as it is on the trail forks app on your phone.
CB I have a question for you. I recently purchased the 830 (coming from the 1000) based mostly on your recommendation. So far I am loving it but I have noticed that when the connect IQ is open ( as you recommended) and my phone is connected to it my phone's battery tends to drain very quickly. Today I did a century ride and last week a 70 miler and on both occasions my phone battery was down to 15%. My question is have you noticed any excessive phone battery drainage like I just described? BTW I have a a Note 8.
Hmmm, I haven't really noticed that but I don't use the IQ apps much when I'm riding. I will pay attention to that. What I use most often is a heart rate monitor and a power meter
I rather have the "washed out " version than I blind eying screen the softer is better for the eyes than brighter btw satellite is also fast enough the 1030 works with 3 overlay maps so yes maybe a little slower but the gps is spot on also nagivatie spot on when you ride a tourride and you decide to ride it again also that is spot on
Strava live segments...how do I just see the KOM. I don’t care about the last time I did it the last follower that did it my PR I just want to see the KOM. No other nonsense. Strava live Segments on the 520 was simple. This 830 is just stupid.
Phones work for some people, but I would not trust putting my phone on the handlebar for a rough mountain bike ride. Also the screen would only lasts a couple hours in bright sunlight. Finally, if you're going to use a heart rate monitor, power meter... a Garmin or Wahoo head unit is the way to go.
The only thing I don't like about bike computers is their interface, it always looks so outdated and unresponsive compared to other mobile devices we have nowadays, why?
Would like to see a deep dive into MTB Dynamics (Jumps, Grit and Flow)

@@ClintGibbs sorry I meant Garmin Connect app
Yes, Trailforks is great. But one I’ll never use is that stupid Strava crap. WTF is that?
just bought edge 130 which is on much better price point imo. 530 and 830 are just way too expensive
Nice review but my phone does the same thing 😏
Phones work for some people, but I would not trust putting my phone on the handlebar for a rough mountain bike ride. Also the screen would only lasts a couple hours in bright sunlight. Finally, if you're going to use a heart rate monitor, power meter... a Garmin or Wahoo head unit is the way to go.
The only thing I don't like about bike computers is their interface, it always looks so outdated and unresponsive compared to other mobile devices we have nowadays, why?
Different screen technology. Your phone would last 3 hours in bright sunlight. A Garmin can last up to 20 hours constantly on.
