I had a pet octopus, he would come up to the top of the tank and squirt water at me to feed him. He would eat from my hand and I could hold him and play like you are doing. You need to add more to the tank for him to explore and play. They’re highly intelligent and get bored and distressed easily when in captivity. I’d also recommend upgrading to a larger tank if you’re able. There’s a reason most people don’t keep octopi as pets, but since you do (and I mean no hate or judgement at all!), make sure you take good care of him. He needs live food and plenty of entertainment. He doesn’t seem to enjoy being handled. Maybe keep working with him and allow him to choose to bond with you.
Actually, octopi is incorrect, which seems surprising. However, 'octopuses' is actually the correct plural of Octopus. We don't latinize the word octopus because it is from Greek origin. Octopodes has also been speculated to be correct grammar, but octopuses is the Merriam Webster accepted term.

its so werid how they came from snails, basically they evolved to swim and grow tentacles around the same time (like a nautilus) then they lost their shell and gained a lot of intelligence (Like a squid) and finally octopi evolved even greater intelligence and lost their internalised shell. So yeh basically a super smart, shelless snail with arms, crazy.
It's interesting that if Octopus had longer life spans, they would be a more dominant creature and higher on the food chain. Many types continue to grow but with a short life, it's hard to say how big they could get with a ten plus year life span. Fascinating, effective and intelligent animals that nature has countered with short lives.
I used to work in the Biology dept at my college as an undergrad. My job was to feed the critters-mostly fish-including one medium sized octopus... Anyways, during my first week I noticed that he escaped. I freaked out! My boss told me don’t worry he’ll show up. Sure enough he was back the next day and 2 small trout were missing. That octopus would feast on the fish and such when ever he wanted to and return to his own enclosure.
I only found this channel cause I was looking at octopus vids after watching an amazing documentary called "My Octopus Teacher" 🐙 You got some good videos and your care & concern for the animals shows.
I love your octupus - one question though, has it bitten you with his beak yet? Happy 2020 to you and Houdini = gave you a thumb up for doing and posting the video and I hit the subscribed button as well.
My first thought was "you shouldn't keep octopuses as pets..." then you explained it and showed your knowledge and care in such a way that it made me happy. I know I can't read an octpus' mind, but I think that little guy is living a great life ❤ thanks for being an awesome pet owner
Houdini - " Man this guy has no clue...I'm just playing dumb waiting for the other fish to grow big and delicious. Haha thinks he has hidden my food I've seent it ! Seent it with my own two eyes!!!" - 2 months later..... walking up the steps... gazes into room.. " Wtf! " Houdini - " Mmmm sorry buddy it was time.. the food was delicious thanks for feeding them to be big and strong , now can you take my out of my tank its time to burn of few of these calories... "
Nah until we learn how to care for them better its twisted seeing Octopus in home aquariums. Extremely intelligent and emotional so they require near constant stimuli and their lifespans are so short in captivity.
They usually live longer in captivity than in the wild at this point, because of predation and delaying their mating process. Other than reliable reproduction, we are pretty good at keeping them in captivity. As he said in the video however, they are a massive commitment that requires a high skill level and time investment, especially considering how short lived they are. I’d also caution against thinking of them as emotional, because that is super close to anthropomorphism, which can prevent us from treating them properly.
@@Tinyvalkyrie410 In the wild and in captivity, octopuses have shown demonstrable emotions. They have personalities and have shown individual interests and relationships. Anthropomorphism is about applying constructed human traits to other life. No one in the field would ever deny that these are emotional animals. There is a difference between keeping a creature alive in captivity and keeping it happy in captivity
@@Tinyvalkyrie410 Yes I'd start with Sy Montgomery's story and accounts from aquarium handlers. The cambridge declaration on consciousness is really interesting too, and the way an octopus's brain(s) control its emotions has been shown to be evolutionarily similar to ours --> www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(18)30991-6
sicksailorz an octopusses first sign of stress is usually inking, which Haudini is clearly shown not to do. It’s very possible Haudini has started to grow a good bond with him being that he’s the one feeding him and taking care of his enclosure
Joris Kemp thanks for the answer!! I really hope it’s the case, he’s adorable. But just like we humans can have panic attacks, we can also be under stress without it going to an extreme.. lol if I make sense. Like how do we know for sure he is enjoying it and not mildly stressing out? No hate or anything but I can f.x see when my snakes are relaxed, mildly stressed and really stressed out.. or do octopi don’t really have “stages” of stress
sicksailorz im not aware of “stages of stress” within octopuses. What i do know is that their colour can say something about their mood, but this depends on the species. In cases like the Giant Pacific and Common Octopus, red is usually the colour that shows that theyre relaxed, and black is in many species a sign of “get away from me”. However, George owns a Carribean Blue Spot, so i can’t really tell, but being that Haudini doesn’t change colour when hes going from swimmin around in the tank to being handled, i think that hes quite comfortable.
ngl. i have a semi interest in aquariums when this channel was randomly recommended to me....will say this guy being attractive is what mainly had me watch the video :P
this neural brain IS the better template for designing AI. much better than what they developed from social media and an octopus would be better at driving than anything that they have put together so far. an soo much more inteligent to begin with . the octopus is astonishing..
Who should I watch to learn about octopus keeping? The first red flag for me honestly seeing that the octopus escaped on the plane so I went to the video to see what he was being carried in. Such a stressful situation;from what I found online it's really hard on these fellas when it comes to traveling
I went to Sealife Brighton a few months ago, and thought at the time that the tank they kept the octopus in was incredibly small and dull for a creature said to be among the most intelligent on the planet. It was locked in there with no other fish, no toys, no rocks, literally nothing that I could see. I was just thinking of this at the start of this video, and was shocked when you mentioned that particular Sealife - Ha! At least your tank has fish and I trust you to spend more time with yours.
Thank you for sharing your octopus with is again can you please make a feeding video on him that would be amazing to see but thanks for sharing George have a great Christmas and if this gets the commant shoutout happy new year too everyone

Where did you go? I saw women swimming with octopuses in pictures and I want to go there!
@@YumegakaMurakumo Jordania!
Long live Lightning Houdini!! Hands down my favorite cephalopod ❤️.
How dare you say that when Lily exists! 😂
Just imagine the amount of intellegence they would have if they lived to be 60 years!
Houdini is so cute! I never even thought that owning an octopus was a possibility 😍
its so werid how they came from snails, basically they evolved to swim and grow tentacles around the same time (like a nautilus) then they lost their shell and gained a lot of intelligence (Like a squid) and finally octopi evolved even greater intelligence and lost their internalised shell. So yeh basically a super smart, shelless snail with arms, crazy.
The level of intelligence needed to recognise fish in other aquariums as prey and figure out how to get to them in an alien enviroment is emense
Guarantee an octopus could achieve it.
It's interesting that if Octopus had longer life spans, they would be a more dominant creature and higher on the food chain. Many types continue to grow but with a short life, it's hard to say how big they could get with a ten plus year life span. Fascinating, effective and intelligent animals that nature has countered with short lives.
Finally. I was waiting for an update. Merry Christmas, George.
Really!!! Haha
Octopus never fail to amaze me!
„Houdini got a little crush on me“
Me: who doesn’t??
💯😍‼️
I only found this channel cause I was looking at octopus vids after watching an amazing documentary called "My Octopus Teacher" 🐙 You got some good videos and your care & concern for the animals shows.
Oh my god me too!!! I just finished that documentary on Netflix just now and literally went straight to RUclips to look up octopus videos lol !!!!
I love your octupus - one question though, has it bitten you with his beak yet? Happy 2020 to you and Houdini = gave you a thumb up for doing and posting the video and I hit the subscribed button as well.
You should watch My Octopus Teacher that just came out on Netflix, they really are very intelligent invertebrates!
They can actually JUMP too 🙂
Humans don’t live long either, 100 years give or take.
My first thought was "you shouldn't keep octopuses as pets..." then you explained it and showed your knowledge and care in such a way that it made me happy. I know I can't read an octpus' mind, but I think that little guy is living a great life ❤ thanks for being an awesome pet owner
Love your videos
Houdini - " Man this guy has no clue...I'm just playing dumb waiting for the other fish to grow big and delicious. Haha thinks he has hidden my food I've seent it ! Seent it with my own two eyes!!!"
- 2 months later..... walking up the steps... gazes into room.. " Wtf! "
Houdini - " Mmmm sorry buddy it was time.. the food was delicious thanks for feeding them to be big and strong , now can you take my out of my tank its time to burn of few of these calories... "
Nah until we learn how to care for them better its twisted seeing Octopus in home aquariums. Extremely intelligent and emotional so they require near constant stimuli and their lifespans are so short in captivity.
Their lifespans are short in the ocean too - not much different, really
Elias Timberlake could you share a source for this?
@@Tinyvalkyrie410 Yes I'd start with Sy Montgomery's story and accounts from aquarium handlers. The cambridge declaration on consciousness is really interesting too, and the way an octopus's brain(s) control its emotions has been shown to be evolutionarily similar to ours --> www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(18)30991-6
I've always thought they're soo soo cool. I had no idea you could keep one!!!! I'm obsessed
Cool vid
Such incredible creatures with such an unfairly short lifespan.
he hasn't escaped "again" yet 😂
Houdini's over there thinking to himself hold up there's other tanks and fish in here?! 😂🤣
I’m such a fan of Houdini, it sucks that they don’t live longer 🥺
How do you know handling him doesn’t stresses him out tho? 🥰
sicksailorz an octopusses first sign of stress is usually inking, which Haudini is clearly shown not to do.
This video made me subscribe. I’ve considered getting an octopus for a long time. They’re such fascinating creatures.
I never realized that their color change can be so evident, I always assumed it was a slight.change🐙🎨
You obviously haven't seen enough octopus camouflage videos. It's very commonly even dramatic.
ngl. i have a semi interest in aquariums when this channel was randomly recommended to me....will say this guy being attractive is what mainly had me watch the video :P
On the road to half a million.
this neural brain IS the better template for designing AI.
much better than what they developed from social media
and an octopus would be better at driving than anything that they have put together so far.
an soo much more inteligent
to begin with .
the octopus is astonishing..
That aquarium is to small bro
Who should I watch to learn about octopus keeping? The first red flag for me honestly seeing that the octopus escaped on the plane so I went to the video to see what he was being carried in. Such a stressful situation;from what I found online it's really hard on these fellas when it comes to traveling
The octopus planned that attempted escape 🐙🧐
Do update on your piranhas, like so he sees!❗️
⬇️
He about to eat those fish🤣
2 comment merry Christmas Coralfish12g I love your pet octopus
He’s gonna hijack your car and drive it on the freeway if he escapes
Nawww he's so cute.
Absolutely love your channel. They’re so informative and helpful. I always learn something new watching you! I even got my friends hooked. You’re videos are always so interesting and you can always notice your passion in them. Keep up the great work! 🐙💙
I see a random cute guy holding an octopus in my recommendations, I click.
I would have honestly said something bad if i haven't read your name.
If these things lived longer than 3 years, just imagine what they could be capable of
It seems to me like you are stressing the octopus, by changing his environment and by taking him out of his aquarium and "playing" with him - otherwise s/he would not be expelling ink.
Imagine your life confined to a public bathroom stall. That's how pet octopus such as this video feels.
