In small towns like this the schools are normally kindergarten through high school seniors. All under one roof. So it just makes sense for all ages to ride the same bus because they are going to the same location. For example my closest local school has a senior class of 20 the whole school might be 100 students.
I guess the moral of this movie is, no matter how goofy you are, just do your best and don't care about what people think. You be you. It will all work out.

I'm from the hometown this movie was shot in. Preston, Idaho. When I grew up there we had a little over 3,000 people living there. Now I think it's close to 10k. I went to that high school. I was in the military when this came out and when I talked to my sister she said that when this came out the city had parked Uncle Rico's van on main Street so people could get their pictures taken.

They did a great job of showing how many small towns during that time hadn't progressed much in 20 years. That is how my hometown was in the 2000s. Visited this town in middle school right before this movie was made. My buddy had moved to my home town that year and I went back with him and his fam for their “dairy days” celebration. I entered the spelling bee and won the whole thing with the word “Mortgage”… good times

But it's also so totally genuine and doesn't try to be a "big movie" or follow the rules. It's just a funny little story, but it was a cultural PHENOMENON back when it came out. Mannn this one came out when I was in middle school. Perfect timing. It’s such a unique movie. And yea easily the best worst dance of all time.
Also as someone who loves movies in general, always always always look up each movie online during the credits to verify after credits. So many people miss out on some good scenes! Just saw sonic 3 and they killed it during their end credits

The game they're playing is called "tetherball." The object of the game is to keep hitting the ball until it has enough momentum to wrap itself tightly around the pole. If more than one player is playing, players take turns hitting the ball. Whoever gives the ball a "winning strike" wins the game.
