I read this in Law School in 1966 and I always thought the smoke ball was large with a wick that you lit, and it medically treated an entire room.Apparently it was an early form of Vicks nasal inhaler.

Yes. I was in the BBC's "Victorian Pharmacy" and displayed the ball - about the size of a golf ball.
