1. we normally don't fully open windows (urban areas) and for awhile houses have been fitted with oscillating windows (you open the top to ventilate). So unless it's a bug prone area we don't have them (or the characteristic door beads). But the main reason is that majority of Europeans don't even open there windows, leading to poor air quality and health problems (there are studies confirming it) and for this reason there's an EU directive coming up on new housing for mandatory VMC's 2. Many houses have one key for all doors....just need to go to a locksmith and change them all. You only close the door from the inside if you want, normally main house door can't be opened from the outside even when it's not locked from the inside. You also won't see many Portuguese worried about a fire inside the house (we normally don't even have smoke detectors and statistically it's a non issue); with kids you can remove the keys from the inside doors, with adults you leave them in (specially bedrooms and bathrooms)....it's called guaranteed privacy :) 3. just don't use too much salt...lol 4. Indeed the law needs a refresh; even though you can film in public it's true you might have issues with fixed cameras (CCTV's, dashcam's) on "constant/looping recording", if filming beyond your property and if someone calls the bureaucrats at CNPD (even then they can't get inside your property to verify what area you are filming so they need to file a complaint with the justice system...it would need to be a blatant misuse of such system, for that to happen or if it happens in a condominium). Yet many have them (i have 4 at home, one in the office and a dashcam in my car...and you see Teslas going about) and never been bothered (except if you live in buildings/condo's....must be a unanimous consent or no CCTV and normally there isn't). And no if you are filming with your phone (not constant/looping recording device), no one can tell you to delete it or stop. And also no, any footage of a crime (legal or illegal...the footage) can be shown to police and can be requested by a judge as proof and can be used as evidence. The reason doorbell cameras are "live feed" (and many very archaic....mainly used for talking because the image quality is ****) is because we don't have the habit of installing cctv/dashcam/etc in a domestic environment, not because of the law (remember nobody knows if your doorbell camera is "looping" and CNPD is not going to bother petitioning the justice system). 5. I use one (cold) program i think nobody really knows what the rest of the programs are for. Fridges, there's the classic slim fridge/freezer unit, but there are "Americanized" versions (think they are still smaller then yours) on sale. Dishwasher....I just place washing detergent. Unless you are in an area of "hard water" (the salt people 😂have a map www.calgon.pt/conselhos-dos-especialistas/como-saber-a-dureza-da-minha-aacutegua/) there's no need for salt.
Hello! Wow that’s a lot of information! The video was made in a light hearted manner as we love our life in Portugal. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! Cheers! M&D
I agree with you on the washing machine/dryer settings. It seems that all over Europe, these machines have symbols or little pictures that you have to figure out what they do. And who washes their clothes for 3 plus hours? The last 2 Airbnb's we stayed at they didn't have the manuals for these machines which made it very difficult to figure out what the setting was. Also, one dryer in our unit had a drawer that filled up with water in a cylinder that you had to empty out. It took a while to figure that one out. Another airbnb had a bubble window that captured the water that you had to empty out. That was very weird.
A big part of the difference in the washing machines comes down to energy efficiency and drying. These front-loading machines do a great job of cleaning, use very little water and electricity. Also, the clothes come out a lot drier than a top-loader typical in the US. That helps a lot for drying. Dryers are not nearly as common, so using a drying rack or hanging is super common. We have a dryer in out place, and it doesn't have a vent, and runs off of regular electricity, using a heat pump for evaporation drying. From start to finish, a load definitely takes longer, but uses a lot less water and electricity. Something I found weird; our dryer has a water tank we need to empty every few loads (optionally, we could hook up a drain hose).
Hello! Ha ha yes the 3 hour wash- apparently it saves on water and is very efficient! So we will try to use it more often! Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D
Fun video. I wonder if many Europeans would cite the same 5 things (but in reverse) if they were living in NA for a year or two. I love your screens! I also had to check our front door lock since we never lock ourselves in at night. That made me wonder if we had left our door unlocked for a couple of years. Luckily ours doesn't work that way and it works the way I was used to it working. All in good fun.
Hello! Ha ha no doubt Europeans would find some weird things to them in North America! Maybe even the reverse! Lol! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts and for getting the “ tongue in cheek “ lightness of the video. Cheers! M&D
Totally agree on the door lock situation! Interesting perspective on the camera subject. Portugal may seem restrictive, but they do rank higher in public safety over the U.S. or Canada. Maybe if the their safety ranking falls, their view on cameras may change. Hopefully they won't. As far as the washer, our washer in the U.S. has 14, multi-function buttons and one rotary knob with 13 positions. providing well over 27 different, possible wash combinations. However, it does lack a paint remover option. 😂
Hello! Great comment - think you’re right about how their safety ranking influences their views on cameras. At any rate it’s all in good fun and we will let you know if we ever use the paint remover setting! Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D

Hello!! Ha ha we love the quick wash option but we will now try the 3 hour eco option as well! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! Cheers! M&D
One thing that I found weird about Portugal is in the shopping stores you can only get most of the time small bags of flour, sugar ,rice, pasta , and the list goes on , not like here in Canada, the keys in the doors is also another thing that I can not get used to even though I am Portuguese .
Hello! Ah that’s interesting- also in Australia! It’s very different for us- we don’t have any interior keys to open doors or the ability to lock someone in a room! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Cheers! M&D
Hello Sherry! Yes all in good fun! 🤩 Siri is a good way to get those temps right without remembering!! I’ll give that a try! Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D
Not so different to the UK, I’d say. We went metric here when we joined the EU, however, I was always converting back to pounds and ounces. I have no idea how much a cup is. Can you tell me? It sounds a ridiculous measure to me. Like saying you could buy fuel by the canister, or milk by the jug 😂🤷♀️
Hello!! Ha ha that’s true …. A cup is so random! I guess we all convert back to what we have gotten used to! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! Cheers! M&D
@@PedroLamyLaranjeira 1 cup is 8 oz, but of what: fat, flour, sugar. I guess a recipe takes the ratios into account, but I just wondered if there is an official amount of a specific ingredient. 🤷♀️

Olá e boa tarde. You reminded me of what we faced when living in Northern, Portuga, for 10 years. Lol Here in Canada, I spoke with my local city police department in Southern, Ontario, about a security camera I wanted to instal, and was told by an officer, that I was not able to film the public area, only my private property. How was I supposed to catch the thief that stole my husband’s tools from our backyard? 😳 Do different jurisdictions have different laws? Love to hear your views on Portugal. What area of North America are you from? Take care and keep on enjoying your second half of life!🌟 Sam 🇨🇦
Hello Sam! Glad we reminded you of your time in Portugal!🇵🇹 Doug was actually an OPP officer in Southern Ontario many years ago. Not sure about the different jurisdictions- you hear varying things. Exactly- if you can’t film outwards then ??? lol! 😆 our base in Canada would be where our boys are now - Alberta and Ontario! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Video all in good fun! 🤩 Cheers! M&D
Fun-loving, as always. Yet there is a BUT..... You are not allowed an 'opt out' once a country's authorities have implemented another 'security' feature (all in the name of 'protecting' you, of course 🤔...). Increasingly, facial recognition and bio metrics rule the world. Isn't 'if nothing to hide, there's nothing to worry about' dangerously shortsighted? So sorry about your car, but Portugal recognizes the importance of privacy. Studies show how children who know that they are filmed behave more self- consciously than those that are allowed to 'just be'. Lets keep a semblance of privacy alive! PS: You both seem delightful! 😊
I suppose the word weird is a very common word used in America, to describe many things but outside of America it’s pretty insulting to call cultural differences weird. I would suggested maybe a search for another word the next time because it’s like saying that another cultures way of doing something is less than the American way.
Hello Kim , We disagree the word weird is the correct word for what we described in the video. We are speaking English to an English audience who is clear about the connotation of the word. As well, nothing described in the video were “ cultural differences “. We would suggest you rewatch the video as we never said or implied what you are suggesting. As well, we are not American. M&D
It is also weird to find "Villa Doce" for sale on Idealista. Are you moving, or just testing the market? Not bad value increase in that case... A little tough on our budget, but sure the nicest view in Funchal. In any case, the best of luck! PS! Do you know why the "Melrose Place" building nearby that you reviewed has not been sold yet? The potential there is enormous, if the Great Wall holds for years to come...
Hello! Ha ha 😆 yes let us know if you’re interested. Not weird as people buy and sell real estate all the time. 😃Yes Melrose Place has sold! Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D

Interesting fact about cameras. Can you have a in car camera that captures views out the front and rear window for documenting accidents and fraud or hit and runs?
@@ricardomartins1783 it has value for the insurance expert mediating the accident, because when you tell your version of events you have footage to back it up and normally the other party doesn't...which means besides a trustworthy tale of events it shows the other party false statements
Hello! There seems to be some debate about whether it can actually be used if you have footage. We were told that our hit and run would require a first hand view, as in someone who saw the hit and run to be considered a hit and run. So ?? We were told that cameras unless directly on our property that other footage facing out could not be used. Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
@@Track_Us_Downin the case of the hit and run you would be at the window and noted down the plate of the vehicle😊 in case of a more serious crime (murder for example), the footage would be used, no doubt.
Please refrain from calling cultural aspects you both may not be familiar with as weird. It's incredibly ethnocentric. Some might say it's weird for a man to get cosmetic work done, but here we are. From your videos, I can tell you both have lived fairly sheltered experiences. So, unexpected might be a better word
Hello Darlene. First of all your comment is rude and inappropriate. You have clearly lived a “ sheltered experience” as you are missing the tongue in cheek light hearted manner in which this was presented. None of this was “ cultural aspects” nor was any of this “ ethnocentric “. Not sure what the cosmetic work comment is about- if you’re insinuating that Doug has had cosmetic work done- you’re wrong- he’s that good looking at 53 naturally. That’s a rude comment none the less. We are highly university educated, well traveled individuals who worked as professionals for decades. Perhaps you should not watch our videos - they are not intended for you.
Hello! Yes Portugal is extremely safe. Why would you need CCTV cameras? I guess to help solve even one crime…. Think of a missing / abducted child- it has happened… how great it would have been to have footage to solve that. For us it was more for the hit and run. Yes our washing machine is in the hallway! Cheers! M&D
I don’t think it’s weird or archaic that you are not filmed in a public place by an individual’s security camera without your permission. I think it’s weird to think it’s normal….just like carrying guns. I think the first thing to remember when moving abroad is to just stop comparing everything incessantly 😂
Hello Marianne, We do think it’s archaic having an expectation privacy when the world has cell phones and cameras. Giving up a little privacy for the safety of all is worth it- simply ask a mother whose child has been taken if she wishes there were security cameras or independent footage?? We do not need your reminder to “stop comparing everything incessantly “ as it’s quite rude. You are missing the tongue in cheek light hearted manner in which all this was presented. The differences are fun and add to the joy - if you watched any of our other videos or even this one until the end you should have picked up on that. Maybe this channel is not for you.
I know what's weird: North Americans picking Europe to "retire". Why not go to Florida if one wishes to maintain North American conventions and habits?

Weird- estranho.bizarro.esquisito.

this was very fun and informational. thank you
Hello! Thanks for watching and commenting. It’s all in good fun as we love our life here in Portugal! Cheers! M&D
1. we normally don't fully open windows (urban areas) and for awhile houses have been fitted with oscillating windows (you open the top to ventilate).
Cheers! M&D
@@Track_Us_Down we Portuguese talk/write too much...sorry
Cheers! M&D
Interesting & informative. Love the reference to the 70s TV show.
Hello Morgan! Thanks for watching and getting the light hearted manner in which it was presented. Cheers! M&D
Here in New Jersey you can have the same lock as yours but we have to have the key in the lock all the time.
Hello! That’s interesting! Thanks for watching and sharing! Cheers! M&D
Hi D&M
We have all the same ‘weird’ things here in London! Great fun video
Hello guys!! lol 😂 ha ha yes of course!! All done in a light hearted way- mostly it’s my inability to convert temps! lol! Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D
Cool and fun video! You can make a conversion chart by the oven from celsius to fahrenheit. The rest are super easy fixes. 🎉 I actually love the washing machine settings! Super 😎!
Hello! Ha ha of course!! That’s on me to remember or make a chart! Nothing to fix we are just laughing 😆 at it all! We love our life here. Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
Hello from Florida. Thanks for another entertaining video. Glad to see Leo is fine.
Hello Walter! Leo is living his best life here in Portugal! 🇵🇹 thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D
How ‘bout the bathroom light switch on the OUTSIDE of the bathroom!! A recipe for practical jokes.
Safety...
Hello! That’s right and it sure is a lot of fun to flick the light constantly on someone!! All in good fun! Thanks for watching and for the fun comment! Cheers! M&D
Camera fully agree with you ,fridge we actually bought American style as I just like it that way ,even though we are from Europe Malta .But now I am facing the programs in washing mashine😂 and use only one option ,named Mix .Regarding amount of keys we solved it by buying from Leroy lock with the same key ,so we can open 2 or 3 different doors with the same key
Hello!! Ha ha we love the quick wash option but we will now try the 3 hour eco option as well! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! Cheers! M&D
Love this one!! ❤
Hi Dianne! Thanks friend! Lol! 😆 Cheers! M&D
On the stove just do 180 for the 350 that’s what I do and it’s perfectly fine, and it’s easy to remember 😂
Hello! Thanks!!! 🙏🏻 yes I have to just remember- it’s not rocket science. lol! 😂 thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
One thing that I found weird about Portugal is in the shopping stores you can only get most of the time small bags of flour, sugar ,rice, pasta , and the list goes on , not like here in Canada, the keys in the doors is also another thing that I can not get used to even though I am Portuguese .
Hello Mary! Yes that’s true- the quantity is very small for those items. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D
Dead locks are common in Australia too, just leave a separate key in the lock when you are inside
Hello! Ah that’s interesting- also in Australia! It’s very different for us- we don’t have any interior keys to open doors or the ability to lock someone in a room! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Cheers! M&D
The camera issue is interesting. Every Tesla has 5 cameras and they constantly record wherever they are all the time.
Hello! Yes isn’t that interesting- wonder if the footage would be allowed in case of an accident here? Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
well , your oven is actually German.
Hello! Yes ok it’s German- but it’s the cooking in Celcius that makes us laugh! 😆 it’s all in fun! Cheers! M&D
A "tablespoon" does not have the same content in Australia as it does in the USA and UK; better use metric !
Hello! Ha ha that’s good to know! Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
350 F= 180
Hello! Yes I must remember this!! Not sure why it’s so darn hard! Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
Immigrants to Portugal 🇵🇹. Welcome
Hello! We have been in Portugal for almost 3 years. We love it! 😍 All in good fun! Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
So true! Luckily our place has screens! And I did find measuring cups! I use Siri a lot when cooking for quick conversions! Fun video!
Cheers! M&D
32oz=almost 1liter so 1cup=8oz=25cl=2.5dl=250ml
Hello! Yes perfect!! Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
@@PedroLamyLaranjeira 1 cup is 8 oz, but of what: fat, flour, sugar. I guess a recipe takes the ratios into account, but I just wondered if there is an official amount of a specific ingredient. 🤷♀️
Portuguese homes are not made out of paper, so the fire hazard is much less than in America.
Hello! Ha ha 🤣 yes I guess that’s true! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Cheers! M&D
If course you can buy an "American" refrigerator here, provided you have enough space to put it somewhere
Hello Paul! Ha ha yes of course if you have the space. It’s just funny to us how the refrigerators are typically small and blend in with the cupboards. We have adapted to a smaller one and it’s all good! Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D
My friend not only in Portugal .In London is the same now one has a camera to the street or the other house
Hello! Ah that’s interesting. Thanks for watching and sharing. Cheers! M&D
Olá e boa tarde.
You reminded me of what we faced when living in Northern, Portuga, for 10 years. Lol
Here in Canada, I spoke with my local city police department in Southern, Ontario, about a security camera I wanted to instal, and was told by an officer, that I was not able to film the public area, only my private property.
How was I supposed to catch the thief that stole my husband’s tools from our backyard? 😳
Do different jurisdictions have different laws?
Love to hear your views on Portugal.
What area of North America are you from?
Take care and keep on enjoying your second half of life!🌟
Sam 🇨🇦
Hello! Thanks for sharing - lots to think about in your comment. Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
Cheers! M&D
What about the "bidé" in the bathroom?
Hello! Yes that’s also something different for us. We don’t have one in our home but we do see them. Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
Hello D&M! I loved this video. I was laughing while watching it. I think my husband and I can add few more to your list ;) I think we just have to relax and enjoy the uniqueness of the place. Blessings!
Hello Diana! Exactly it’s all in fun! You know how much we love our life here in Portugal and all these things make it more fun! 🤩 Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! M&D
Interesting fact about cameras. Can you have a in car camera that captures views out the front and rear window for documenting accidents and fraud or hit and runs?
You can have it, but has no value for your insurance issues. (may be usefull for criminal facts or seriuos infrigements, I guess)
Deciliters lmao, deciliters, a decaliter is 10l or 3 american gallons....
Hello! Ha ha yes thank you for this! Still tricky! Cheers! M&D
I thought Portugal is so safe. Why would you need CCTV camera? At least your washing machine does not seem to be in the kitchen??
@@Track_Us_Down privacy rules are different here in Portugal. That’s the way it is here. Ciao
I know what's weird: North Americans picking Europe to "retire". Why not go to Florida if one wishes to maintain North American conventions and habits?
Didn’t watch to the end?
Hello! Yes Florida is a great place to retire as well! We love put retirement in Portugal 🇵🇹! We have no desire for NA conventions and habits! lol! The spirit of this video was light hearted. Maybe you missed that? Thanks for watching. Cheers! M&D
Weird- estranho.bizarro.esquisito.
Hello Isabela! Interesting point of view. We don’t agree but thanks for sharing your thoughts. Cheers! M&D
I think weird is not the right word...if so, your weird to me!
Hello! Yes weird is the right word. Perhaps you didn’t understand the tongue in cheek manner in which it was presented. And yes perhaps you would find us weird! lol 😂 Cheers! M&D
🤣😅you made me laugh with the mosquito at night. Luckily, I´m accostumed to metric settings everywhere. Salt in the dishwasher for hard water? I´m used to it. Laundry with a lot of programs ? I use them, the machine is italian, but I never counted how much progs it has 😂 You made me laugh a lot with this video 😀😃😄😁
Hello Teodoro! Thanks for watching and for the fun comment! Always great hearing from you! Cheers! M&D
#2... you don't keep the key in the keyhole over night??
Hello! Yes you could keep the key in the keyhole overnight- it’s just weird to us to have a key in the lock in case of emergency and have to fiddle with it. Thanks for watching! Cheers! M&D
