Justin Greaves from Crippled Black Phoenix comments: “Ryan came back with the words and vocals after I sent him the song and it blew us away. We already connected with Ryan when on tour and being fellow animal lovers and vegans, he, Belinda and myself have a deep appreciation for speaking out about our animal friends. The song lyrics are about Ryan’s cat Willie who sadly passed away. Coincidentally, at the same time we (Belinda and myself) lost two of our cat family, Nell and Tigger (the old three-legged dude who starred on the cover of Horrific Honorifics). So this song is like a coming together to celebrate the love we have for the cats, how we miss them and how they influence our lives. Joining Ryan on Cry Of Love is our friend and previous collaborator Suzie Stapleton. Putting her distinctive voice on, giving it another dimension. The video for this fried my brain, I love it so much and so do the rest of the band, Guilherme totally understood what the feelings of the song are about, and he made a beautiful and simple arrative which will touch even the coldest heart. If you love your cat, or lost one you love, then be prepared to grab the tissues.”
Ryan is great and Willie was lovely. Thank you for this. I lost a cat to a year-long hard-fought battle with kidney cancer a few years ago. It was really devastating.
When I first heard the song without any background info, I was intrigued and loved it. Then I read this about the lyrics and was impressed; I thoroughly enjoy lyrics that are heartfelt and about something else than your standard love story or break-up. And then I watched the video along with the music. Now I can't listen to the song without seeing these simple but very powerful images in my mind, and crying. I've been a blubbering mess for days now. Thank you for touching me so deeply! What a beautiful ode to a beloved pet.
great idea, but what I felt was really an afterthought is the mix of Suzies vocals... we can't even hear her properly! Missed chance on the album I think.
[Verse 1] Dig deep in my skull, help me find what I lost I cut off the last piece that was soft I found it in you, I saw it in us Every day since you're gone, I could see it corrupt Time hardened by hearts, it was cold from the start Give myself at all cost, now my tenderness is lost My tenderness is lost My tenderness is lost My tenderness is lost [Verse 2] You're here in my minds, your warmth at my side I still feel lost in the night, in the night [Chorus] I hear your cry of love, no one can steal it away Time is a cruel enemy and it's too late I see your eyes of love, no one can turn them away Time is a bitter enemy and it's too late I feel your touch of love, no one can pull it away Time is my true enemy and it's too late I hear your cry of love No one can steal it away My tenderness is lost My tenderness is lost My tenderness is lost [Chorus] I hear your cry of love, no one can steal it away Time is a cruel enemy and it's too late I see your eyes of love, no one can turn them away Time is a bitter enemy and it's too late I feel your touch of love, no one can pull it away Time is my true enemy and it's too late I hear your cry of love No one can steal it away [Outro] I hear your cry of love, no one can steal it away No one can steal it away
song never fails to make me get emotional, not just for the fact that I lost my cat of 20 years recently but it also evokes feelings of a lost relationship and someone I loved and had to let go, brutally raw yet beautiful emotion.
Thank god I'm not the only one who hears a whole dollop of proper Post-Punk-Goth (when it was good) and not the awfulness that subgenre descended into.
I've heard the song for the first time just a few days ago and it instantly blew me away. It feels so sad, so melancholic but at the same time there is warmth and love, like an embrace of your beloved ones. I didn't know, what's the song about. But now I understand. I understand everything and it's just amazing how everything fits together. This is the perfect soundtrack about loving your pet (and it doesn't matter if it's a cat, dog, bird, bunny, mouse, rat, fish, snake, spider, turtle, horse or whatever), about letting your friend go and about keeping him/her in your heart forever in loving memory.
the greatest band, my absolute favourite band: I'm really looking forward to the new record and hope that they can go on tour again soon and I can see them live again

Same here. We lost 3 in the past 3 years and one of them a week and a half ago. I also have a female that is my baby. It was her sister and brother that was lost so she's the only one of her siblings left. Luckily we have 3 more to keep her company.

Some people seem to wondering what he's carrying. CPB wrote the song, and they were inspired by the passing away of their cats. However the director's interpretation is separate of this. The ending shows the footprints of a human next to that of a dog. These footprints act as a good metaphor for memories, the memories he has of the time he spent with his dog on this beach. The beach he is now taking his pet one last time. This doesn't take away from people mourning cats or other pets, it just works well symbolically for a video.
