    Waymo did quite well to get out of that parking lot! It's quite timid regarding pedestrians and it sees a lot of imaginary stop signs. I'm impressed that it rerouted because of the truck blocking the road, but then it got stuck in another alley behind a parked truck. It's interesting that Waymo ignored Roadside Assistance and went on its merry way!

    They should add a feature where if the rider has a license and they could verify it somehow, then you could be allowed to help the car in a situation when it gets stuck. It most likely won't happen though due to insurance reasons and safety, but it would be cool.

      tbh the cars could just need a slow assisted passenger driving mode ^^ or even allow to exit the vehicle and remote control it slowly arround an obstacle... so u exit steer it arround (it self makes sure u dont hit something...) when ur done u get back in and press the contenue ride button ... and done

      I imagine that there is nothing to stop a passenger from taking over. Also, I get the impression that these cars are open to vandalism and other related issues. There is a video where a journalist was riding in a Waymo and got behind the wheel and took over because the car couldn't get exactly to her destination.

    Waymo will have to add the ability to drive onto private driveways a little to avoid getting stuck down narrow public streets. The need for assistance in situations where any human driver could easily maneuver is not sustainable for Waymo when they scale up.
    Kevin is doing Waymo a favor with his tricky routes.

      Strange to me that they haven't got a team of drivers that can remotely connect and take over the car using a VR headset

    • @charliedoyle7824
      @charliedoyle7824 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@oriolopocholo they could use a vr headset, it's just another device. But they don't need it at Waymo; a computer screen does the job just fine. They don't "take over" the car remotely, they give it a command to drive a certain way, then the car does the driving. The phone network is too unreliable and laggy to remotely drive a car.

  • @SteltekOne
    @SteltekOne 9 месяцев назад +8

    Honestly, Waymo did pretty well. The entire drive looked safe, and it can't help it when somebody is blocking the road. Sure, a human driver could've squeezed by, but the "safety first" approach it took worked out, and didn't incur a huge delay. It'll be interesting to see when the learning rate reaches the point of diminishing returns and how far this tech will have gotten at that point.

    I still don't understand why Rider Support is unable to hold the car (or select a premature dropoff / holding spot) so Roadside Assistance doesn't need to follow you and "hope" they're able to enter the car before it takes off again, lol.

    • @findlisa5
      @findlisa5 7 месяцев назад

      I agree, that is hard to understand. I guess it is because Waymo believes this is a way to reduce the use of roadside assistance and ultimately reduce Waymo's costs. I think they don't care much about wasting the time of their rider support, since that service is remote and cheap. But their roadside assistance is local and expensive, so it's something Waymo is trying to reduce and ultimately eliminate, even if it makes their team look disjointed. It's okay that rider support has no idea what is going on and no ability to control it, since the goal is for Waymo is to get by without roadside assistance. Their thinking is that forcing Waymos to deal with difficult situations, like getting stuck in an alley, will ultimately reduce roadside assistance to virtually nothing.
      Is that where it ends? Will Waymos ultimately handle all but the most serious accidents without contacting roadside assistance? It seems like they might. For example, if a Waymo hits a cyclist who accelerates in the occluded area of a truck (as already occurred in SF) can that Waymo return to work as soon as it reports the accident to their insurance company, just like a human driver could? Yeah, that is where they appear to be headed.

In waymo you can literally sleep and the car will do it's thing driving safely. in a Tesla you 100% need to sit in the driver seat all the time and need to take over if it decides to do something crazy. The fact that waymo let's their car drive with no one being there to take over is so impressive. Waymo is also training now on the highway which is impressive. Tesla is still good tho no hate on Tesla but I like waymo more

      @@Cu_Ty_Pro i agree with everything except that Tesla wouldn't have gotten pass that truck. Waymo uses lidar which can calculate detail better then a camera can down to the centimeter. Waymo knows what it can and can't squeeze through. Also waymo is kinda a wide car not as slim as the Tesla but even then it resolved the issue by itself.

    Was the pickup truck in the narrow alley illegally parked, i.e., too far away from side of alley? In my city, a bylaw prescribes a maximum distance from parked-vehicle's curb-side wheel to curb edge.
    Should autonomous vehicle systems automatically photograph and log perceived violations of local street bylaws and then file bylaw infraction reports to the city?
