Magnifiques images ! Mon grand-père était à bord du Richelieu ; il était Quartier-Maître et a fait toute la 2ème Guerre Mondiale sur Le Richelieu. Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo !
Whaoo, thank you so much for posting this ! The Richelieu was attacked by the Royal Navy aircrafts in Dakar, Senegal, as still under the command of the Vichy regime. Then the crewmembers chose to join the Allied. What a beautiful and elegant battleship. Thanks to the Americans, it was upgraded with more anti-aircraft artillery ( 20mm Oerlikon ) to face the aerial threat. Greetings from France.
One of the very best design under the official limit of 35.000t and a great fire power with 2 main batteries with 4 385mm High velocity guns. Richelieu was the only one battleship able to reload guns whatever the angulation position at the contrary of all other allied battleships which need a neutral angulation for that (big lost of time for reloading the main batteries). American engineers were very impressed by the very complex reloading system implemented on the Richelieu class.
I like this ship, however, I think it's a mistake to place two quadruple turrets at the front like this. If a bomb or a shell explodes in this area, it may neutralize the main artillery. The turrets arrangement is better on the New Jersey class battleships, i think. Greetings from France
Yes she was very advanced. Even the Iowa could not reload without the main batteries coming to neutral position. One of my favorite battleships. I think she would have been a tough opponent for the Bismarck or Tirpitz.
ntphong999 For sure that's why its sucessor was bigger and designed with 3 quadruple turrets! But never build, a shame. Nevertheless, regarding what was authorized before the war, I'm not sure their choice was so bad. He was designed like an interceptor with an higher topspeed than direct opponents and an advanced submarine defense to go through escorts.
+Rowhider RC & Racing Except that the system desinged to load shells at whatever angle the guns were never worked properly, shelles kept being jammed at angles higher than 50 degrees... Same goes for secondarie batteries which were never satisfactory in their anti aircraft role because of their slowlyness in traverse and low rate of fire. The reloading system was too complex and often jammed it self or was being repaired. As for the security of the main batteries, their casemate were heavily armored and those quad turrets were in fact twin double turrets with an armor plate between each half to reduce probability of damage to both halves of the turret at the same time, the two turrets were quite far from each other too, farther than in Nelson class Battleships. The engineering section was the most technically advanced for turbine engines (not diesel), the ultra heat boilers could muster an tremendous power and allow the ship to go 30 kts with smaller boilers than in other BBs which made the Power/Mass ration excellent. The main down side of the ship was clearely its AA defenses in spite of advanced prototypes of semi automatic firing autocanons, firing about 200 rounds per minute; those types of 100 mm guns became standard for years on many ships in many nations, including Russia and USA (with improvements on detection and fire control such as radar) This ship had interesting ideas. It sure was the best compromise between an ordinary battleship and too extreme Nelson class battleships before the new era of US and Japanese modern fast battleships. Two things US engineers liked about Richelieu: the main guns fire control and the aircraft service facilities which were well designed. Fire control had to be good because twin double turrets set up caused a great dispersion in the half turrets salvoes that could go up to 1000 meters at maximum range ! The problem was due to the proximity of each barrel on a half turret from one another. The shell trails were interfeering with eachother and causing dispersion. The solution is quite simple and was implemented post war: delay the fire of the second half turret gun from 60 milliseconds to give time to the first trail to dissipate before firing the second gun, and dispersion was reduced by 50 percent !
Wowwww! That is awesome, and beautiful. I had no idea. I had searched for USS Arizona entering NYC, and saw this instead. Despite what goes on in the world currently, I am thankful to France for being a great US ally. We wouldn't even exist if it weren't for Francaise. I salute you French.

There's a couple of comments that I'll charitably say are getting confused over the use of the term "United Nations" in this video, since we all know that term better with the international organization. The nations we call the Allies today called themselves a number of names at the time, primarily the United Nations or the Allied Nations. This was because, compared to the Axis, there were SO MANY of them--showcasing the dozens of flags and dozens of countries they represented was a repeated theme in Allied propaganda. The name stuck around after the war since the UN was formed by the victors. It's no coincidence that the permanent Security Council members are the five major nations on the winning team; the USA, Great Britain, France, Russia (then the Soviet Union), and China.
Richelieu was way more than just a cardinal. He was pretty much de facto ruler of France under Louis XIII, and strengthened french positions in the 30 years war. In addition he was also commander of the Siege of La Rochelle.
When you consider that Augusta will go on to command the US force at Operation Overlord and Sitka Force at Operation Dragoon, it worked out for the best given the circumstances despite Jean Bart doing her damndest to sink her outside Casablanca.
A great ship, much more advance and performance than the super hyped Bismark, crippled, paint still wet, by a WW1 canvas clad torpedo biplane travelling at 40 mph...and then finished off by the British Navy while a sitting duck...Bismark disabled her radar by the blast of her own guns! The Richelieu suffered a busted gun when using rounds not designed to specification for her guns, being unable to access their own supplies back in France. The US ended up machining new high velocity rounds/shells with the right specifications...sad this ship is so little known!
Actually, we don't know if the Bismarck was scuttled or if the Royal Navy finished her off with torpedoes. What's laughable is the idea that planes sank her. No, they did what the doctrine at the time was. Planes would damage the enemy ship allowing friendly warships to close and engage.
Nathan Peterson Never said you, but the OP who stated "the super hyped Bismark, sunk when the paint still wet, by a WW1 canvas clad biplane travelling at 40 mph". That is laughable. The scuttle/torpedo is kind of directed at everyone.
***** I guess after loosing all their major cities, suffered 8 millions casualties/dead, and having destroyed Europe killing an additional 50 millions, Germans were compelled to find a reason other than following blindly a psychopathic megalomaniac.... communism would do!
And just a year earlier, The allies fired at French ships, even sinking a few of them. War is complicated, you can't just put the blame on one side only.
In several months, Richelieu will arrive in Scapa Flow as Ranger, the carrier which sank her sister, Jean Bart, is about to return to the US following service with the British Home Fleet. Augusta, which will serve as flagship of the US forces at Operation Overlord and the Sitka Force at Operation Dragoon, will also cross paths with her there briefly. The French Navy wasn't done any favors being bordered by Germany but that mess was sorted eventually.
I hear so much about this untested battleship!!! A ships strengths and weaknesses can only be measured under the heat of battle! did this ship ever go toe to toe with another battleship?? No, it did not!! All this fucking tech talk of this ships superiority blah! Blah! One hit between its two forward turrets could have rendered it useless In battle, or it could have been unsinkable, but we will never know
Her sister ship Jean Bart showed herself well getting bombarded by Massachusetts and Ranger despite having a limited ability to fight back at Casablanca. And her accuracy against Augusta two days later was nothing to disparage.
A great battleship no doubt. On par with the Bismarck I think not! Not until well after refit in US for sure! Roma maybe but King George V or South Carolina class no.
The Richelieu and Jean Bart were as powerful and faster than the Bismarck and its guns were as efficient as those of the Georges V class ships. They were faster but a little less armored. France had voluntarily limited the weight of its ships so as not to compromise England's efforts to reach a naval treaty ...
Few people know that if the Richelieu fired a full broadsides it would actually damage the ship. Moreover, having just one main battery does not really accomplish much while evading pursuit. What does one do? Strike colors the moment something appears astern? The French would have been better off having the British build their navy.
Complete bullshit. Richelieu fired numerous broadside when she operated with the Eastern fleet. Not a single one damaged her. If you're referring to that one incident in Dakar, it was solely because of a faulty hoist, nothing to do with the design itself. The gun layout was indeed slightly worst than a conventional one in a fleeing situation, but the firing angles of the guns would've been more than enough to be able to retaliate while keeping the distance. Don't forget that Richelieu was also the 2nd fastest battleship in history, cape le of steaming at 32 knots, which greatly help. Also, the all-forward layout is much better than a conventional one in case of a chase. The Richelieu class was All around an excellent treaty battleship design. You better get your facts straight before posting nonsense on the internet.
The Marine National stopped building dreadnaught hotels with these ships - they could out run anything they could not out gun and had ample fire power to destroy any smaller faster ships (Cruisers/Destroyers) in numbers . They were bad ass before Radar and AA added by USA which made them likely superior to Bismarck and equal to Tirpitz - both near if not virtually bling at night w/out moonlight as (meraculously) German radar sucked - and its own guns took out range finding from percusion of 1st salvo vs Hood. . RN didn't finish Vanguard until war near over which had old design 15" guns. So what would / could England had built for France? They could only put 14" guns in KGV class - granted 10 of them. French MN BB and BC were fast and BB's very well armored for treaty accelerated ship. They were designed to out duel Hipper Vlass HC and Pansa ships and Italian's 3 Roma class BB's. I think if Italions had US Radar and AA, and they didn't suck at manufacturing powder and shells - they had em all beat except Iowa's and Yamatos - but thats a big if. If Japanese steel didn't suck of course Yamato superior to Iowas..... Really the US radar and range finding was most critical - after dark its - USA owned the night.
@@charlesharper2357 What you are describig here is just a firing method: partial salvoes. The Richelieu-class was perfectly capable of firing full salvoes. What do you think the quadruple turrets were for? In fact, it is never mentionned anywhere in John Jordan's "French Battleships 1922-1956" (which is THE biggest reference in the matter) or even in the Navweap page for the french 380mm gun that these turrets were only capable of firing 2 guns at a time. Unless you have a solid, primary source to contradict these two sources I just provided, I'm afraid YOU are talking bullshit.
See, you're wrong because of the "joke," but you're also technically not wrong. France did at one point have a flag that was entirely white! During the period of the monarchy the flag was first repeating gold fleur-de-lis on a blue background, and later on a white. White, you see, is the color of purity and royal authority in the flag-language of the time. This got thrown out during the Revolution, but when the Bourbon monarchs came back, they dispensed with the fleur-de-lis and just had a pure white flag for maximum royal authority. This also ended badly for them since they got thrown out barely a decade later. France don't like that shit.

1 thing I never understood why did they name it after a cardinal rather then a war Hero or King, I mean Jeanne D'arc got a light cruisser and carrier
Richelieu was way more than just a cardinal. He was pretty much de facto ruler of France under Louis XIII, and strengthened french positions in the 30 years war. In addition he was also commander of the Siege of La Rochelle.
Pretty sure that the French sailors had a different kind of refreshment in mind on shore!
Who was French vice admiral in this video
yo gaijin where are you
Jean Bart does not like this video.
When you consider that Augusta will go on to command the US force at Operation Overlord and Sitka Force at Operation Dragoon, it worked out for the best given the circumstances despite Jean Bart doing her damndest to sink her outside Casablanca.
back when the US didn't spit on France..
+Francois Labelle Crippled by the biplane*
Actually, we don't know if the Bismarck was scuttled or if the Royal Navy finished her off with torpedoes. What's laughable is the idea that planes sank her. No, they did what the doctrine at the time was. Planes would damage the enemy ship allowing friendly warships to close and engage.
rizon72 I never said planes sank her. Or are you referring to the countless amounts of adolescents who assume that?
Nathan Peterson Never said you, but the OP who stated "the super hyped Bismark, sunk when the paint still wet, by a WW1 canvas clad biplane travelling at 40 mph". That is laughable.
The scuttle/torpedo is kind of directed at everyone.
***** I guess after loosing all their major cities, suffered 8 millions casualties/dead, and having destroyed Europe killing an additional 50 millions, Germans were compelled to find a reason other than following blindly a psychopathic megalomaniac.... communism would do!
Did he say Reesh-a-loo?
+11Kralle Richelieu, spelling is close to : "Rich a lia"
And just a few weeks earlier these same men fired their ships guns at American ships and aircraft!
Viva la France and the Cardinal Richelieu!

I hear so much about this untested battleship!!! A ships strengths and weaknesses can only be measured under the heat of battle! did this ship ever go toe to toe with another battleship??
No, it did not!! All this fucking tech talk of this ships superiority blah! Blah! One hit between its two forward turrets could have rendered it useless In battle, or it could have been unsinkable, but we will never know
??? HMS Rodney and Nelson also had their turrets in the front !!!
The quads were basically two twins put together, so if the ship's turrets were hit, the other half would still work.
Ships are only as good as the men who sail them.
The French have always had good ships, but lousy navies.

@@Axel23410
Bullshit.
They only fired 2 guns per turret at a time.
@@Axel23410
No, what I'm describing is the fact the Richelieu never fired all four guns in a turret at once.

Ah they're flying the wrong colour flag... the French flag is white... XD
And french army in Berlin 1945
See, you're wrong because of the "joke," but you're also technically not wrong.
France did at one point have a flag that was entirely white! During the period of the monarchy the flag was first repeating gold fleur-de-lis on a blue background, and later on a white. White, you see, is the color of purity and royal authority in the flag-language of the time. This got thrown out during the Revolution, but when the Bourbon monarchs came back, they dispensed with the fleur-de-lis and just had a pure white flag for maximum royal authority.
This also ended badly for them since they got thrown out barely a decade later. France don't like that shit.
