- Why was there a "battleship" in Manhattan in the early 1900s? This video covers the short story of USS Recruit, a recruiting and training facility/landship located in Union Square in Manhattan during WWI.

They should rebuild it for Fleet Week one year.
I did enjoy this video.
It would be a cool way to show some history! Maybe the Navy will see this video!
Pretty cool! I walk through there once in awhile - didn’t realize the space was used for a training / exhibition ship.
Until very recently I didn’t either, glad to share the story!
Excellent Video.
In 1983 I was at San Diego Recruit Training Command for my Navy Basic Training and Spent some time on the USS Recruit, I’m glad to hear that she’s still standing.
Thanks for sharing! Never heard of her until recently
I'm glad to hear that the USS Recruit is now open as a museum. The ship was always a surprise to visitors from out of town!
I also boarded the USS Recruit during basic training in the summer of 1969. I was then assigned to the USS Chicago CG11 for 4 years.
I immediately thought of that ship. That where we learned how to operate sound powered phones in boot camp 1970.
My training ship in Orlando RTC is gone. I actually avoided that training by singing in the Navy choir, lol.
*When I enlisted in the mid 80s, I was sent to San Diego & was acquainted with USS Recruit. I understand nowadays it’s part of a mall!*
@@HM2SGT thanks for sharing! I was debating do a specific story on that one too
All the Navy buildings are gone, it is now civilian housing.
I've heard about the new york battleship before, but didn't realize the ship in San Diego existed or lasted as long as it did
To be honest I didn’t know much about the “landship” training ships either, hope you enjoyed the story!
@@svgproductions72 it was quite interesting, I didn't realize the new york battleship was actually a recruitment station, i thought it was just for war bonds or something
I sure hope recruiters were more honest back then than they were in my time.
I'd still spend a night in jail to give that guy a piece of my mind.
Amidst all the flotsam, a true pearl in the sea 👍. Thx for the info. 100%
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment
Good story. I bet not too many New Yorkers even know this ship existed. They should put a plaque in Union Square Park.
@@jdewitt77 I hope the video gains traction then! I’ve lived in NY all my life and didn’t hear about this until recently, such an odd bit of history!
Brilliant idea!
Obviously you need to do a video on Muroc Maru now.
@@FirstDagger oh I definitely will ! It’s on my list
Yes, 100%
Question. Why are the stars on the gun plugs installed what to me is upside down? There must be a reason even if something like hanging a horseshoe so the luck doesn't drain out.
@@eTraxx that’s a great question, I have no idea lol
USS Recruit Awesome!
THE GRIFT IS STRONG IN THAT ONE
Imagine if they just buried old battleships halfway up the hull in the dirt and said “there you go, it’s an Army fort now.”
It’s still there under the homeless trash
If it was there in 2024, the migrants or homeless could stay there.
Have the Chinese copied it yet?
What a waste of charitable funds!
@@lawrencewiddis2447 I think it was definitely an “interesting” idea and could see that point of view too, but they did gain a bunch of recruits from it!
