      @@WhipCityWrencher Pete I believe the top valve (at the filter head) is an anti-drain valve for the oil outlet side. Makes sense where the filters are fitted on the top of the engine with filter head down. The valve on the other end is the usual bypass filter and the silicon gasket is the usual oil inlet side anti-drain valve. I wonder what the price difference is for the OEM v the MANN branded version?

    Stating the obvious, these VW/Audi spin on applications, unique. The canister protruding threads odd looking for sure. Leave it to German engineering. Safe saying both made by Euro Mann (M&H), the VW to their specs. Elements same. Second valve, closest to outlet better known as an "anti-siphon valve". Designed to keep oil in the center tube and filter on engine shut down. Works independently from the dome bypass valve. It's most like a second anti-drainback valve, but using a mechanical spring. Ford's with Zetec engines also have anti-siphon valve. Agree, adbv silicone. Thanks for vid.

    That is a funky filter, they look totally identical and I'd bet if you could pull that sticker, you might see the Mann printing underneath. There appears to be lok-tite red on those threads that go into the filter base. Not surprised they are well made, though, Mann always had a good reputation and I know alot of british Landy owners use Mann filters. Mann + Hummel also owns Wix and Purolator now. Definitely go with the cheaper option here.
    Nice job as always Pete.

    These filters are for the 2.0T CBFA/CCTA, etc.. gas engines, during the time called out VW had at least four 2.0L engines in the US.
    MHO is, IIRC, the vendor code for Mann.
    The VW has red loc-tite on the threads because the adapter would often stay stuck on the oil filter base.

    It is always interesting to me to decipher who actually makes the OEM filters for the car companies. In this case, the filters are almost identical. In other cases, like the Subaru 15208AA20A, there are telltale signs to show who actually made it (Sakura in that case).

    • @fooberer

      If you take a look at where VW puts these filters, there is a ton of room. They sit pointed straight up on the top side of the engine. The stud press down on part of the oil pressure regulator, I have seen some lower quality filters break this or even just cause low oil pressure.

    It's most likely Mann makes OEM Oil Filters for VW, AUDI, BMW and Mercedes. I heard rumours that in USA the OEM Oil filters known as Motorcraft, AcDelco and Mopar are made by FRAM just labelled differently and slightly different to the ones that are sold in shelfs in Autopart Stores. Don't know if this rumour is true ?

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  6 месяцев назад +2

      Hi Anish,
      I don't think that rumor is true. As far as I know, the Motorcraft and Mopar filters are Purolator-made and owned by Mann and Hummel. The Acdelco are Champ made and are owned by First Brands who also own Fram. I could be wrong though, as companies buy each other out and it really isn't publicized.

      Thanks,

      The threads on these filters stick out and get in the way of the cutting blade on a reg. oil filter cutter.

    • @tedjohnson64
      @tedjohnson64 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@WhipCityWrencher Very interesting! I actually cut open this identical VW filter last week, using a hack saw, and it was surprisingly difficult. Then again, I haven't used a hacksaw in a decade, so maybe my technique was off. I'll have to look into getting a pipe cutter, although at first glance one which is wide enough for this filter appears to be pretty pricey ($100 or so).
      I was also very impressed at how neatly you managed to cut out the paper filter component. I tried using the hacksaw (hey, it was right there!), then with scissors, and ended up with quite a mess. What did you use to cut out the paper element? Thanks in advance!
      Also, I was quite surprised by the hidden data code that you displayed with UV light. I tried that on mine, and voila! Same hidden numbers. Is this a common thing that VW does on all their parts? Or is it just an oil filter thing? Also, any theories on *why* they would hide these numbers, rather than just printing them in ink that's visible in normal light? I've been working on cars and reading about car stuff for 20+ years, and your video is the first time I've ever seen hidden numbers revealed via UV light! Now I'm wondering how many other car parts might have that sort of "invisible ink"...?

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@tedjohnson64 I was lucky with the pipe cutter I have. I picked it up a while back at a yard sale.
      The date code is a German thing, why do they do it? Because they can. 😊LOL, But seriously I think some other European countries also have hidden date codes. Anytime I see no date code on a foreign oil filter I check it with the UV light. I use a hacksaw to cut the media and also wire-backed media. Here's a video I made on how I do it. Thanks! ruclips.net/video/2jOIFBsqGHI/видео.html
